ZJBogey2
4 hours ago, bardle said: Fairway and Hybrid Review Time: I'm gonna break this into two parts because obviously these clubs are very different, naturally lets start with the Woods: Overview: As you already know I only got a 3 wood in my set. I've hit some 3 woods before but never actually owned one to play multiple rounds with. I will say it definitely adds some versatility to my long game and its much easier to keep in the fairway than my driver. I have a love / hate with this thing, but the more I use it the more the hate goes away. It started out as a hook machine for me. I mean huge hooks, always OB. The more I use it though, the more I see the potential in it and the better I'm getting at hitting it. My smart range with it right now is 233, thats a little low compared to what good strikes are doing. My longest is 260 with several between 245 and 255. I have a lot of hooks that have brought the average down. Gapping wise its just where it needs to be on the good strikes. About 25-35 yards shorter than my driver and about 15-25 longer than my 3H. Looks: I dig it, its like a baby version of the driver, the yellow is a lot on the bottom as you can see from my pic above but I really don't mind it. From the Deck: I hit it a lot cleaner than I ever thought I would. I think there is definitely something to those rails on the bottom of this thing. Honestly I dont try it too often because I don't have any holes where I feel comfortable hitting the ball 230+ from the fairway..just too many houses and hazards for that. From the Tee: Bombs away...If someone stole my driver, It wouldn't be a big deal..30 yards is a lot, but consistency and fairways matter and this thing finds them... Also I'm pretty sure I could adjust the loft down and hit it further...I may actually do that. Hybrid: Overview: Yeah this club is goofy. I don't have a better word for it. I had never hit a hybrid prior to getting this club so its an experience for me. I honestly don't like it. I know its supposed to be easier to hit than an iron and more forgiving and while that may be true, I have a lot of trouble getting this thing in the air. I have no idea what it is but this is by far the worst club in the bag for me and the only club I honestly just don't like. Don't get me wrong, I've hit good shots with it. Just not many. I played almost an entire round with just it and my 3w and while it does stay in the fairway for the most part, it just doesn't feel right, the launch is low and it runs forever, I can't hit it out of the rough at all either so If I need 200+ out of the rough, I have to take the 4i and just lay up. My smart distance is 205 with my longest being 230...with those numbers I just don't have much use for it when my 4i goes the same distance and is a lot more consistent. For a comparison, My 4i smart distance right now stands at 215. If I could get this thing to consistently go 230 then it would be perfect gapping wise but I just can't seem to figure it out. Looks: Meh, I'd rather have the yellow than the white, but I like the matte finish. From the deck: See my overview...I just can't hit this thing... From the tee: Not bad actually, some of my best shots with this thing are teed up...those shots are the only time I've liked using this club and they are the only shots that give me hope that I can one day use this thing well... I would suggest trying a 7W to replace to Hybrid. Best decision I've made! I'm not sure, I'd definitely be more comfortable with an iron. maybe some sort of utility iron in that spot... I find it easier to hit then a 3H or 4H (same with a 4I). I think that is partly driven by my swing plane. The other part that separates it for me is the forgiveness. My mishits are still playable where my 4I/4H would be OB. Im not comfortable with it out of the rough and will use a 5I if I need the distance. robertson153
This is one aspect that I think is often overlooked in the era of fitting. The fitters many times base their recommendations on what launch monitor data tells them and less on the player's satisfaction with the performance of the club. That said, follow up questions to your above statement: Did you tinker away from the fitter's recommended settings? And, was your fitting done indoors (LM only) or outdoors (LM + visible ball flight)?Indoors only on trackman. It’s the first time I’ve moved the weight around and adjusted the hosel setting. It was recommended weight back on 9*. Now it’s more of a penetrating ball flight, which I love. Nunfa0
So here we are at the end of week 5 and it's time for my opinion on the fairway wood and hybrid. Right the three wood first. This was the easiest club for me to get to grips with and the one I was certain I would like. In my opinion Cobra have been making some of the best performing and easiest to hit fairway woods that money can buy. In fact the club that this 3 wood was competing against was the F7 model. I had that club set at 13.5* and it was a rocket. With the F9 I initially set it up the same but soon discovered that 14.5* was the optimal loft for me. It's an easy club to hit high, low fade and draw. I can hit it from the tee, rough, fairway, bare dirt, in fact almost any lie. The rails on the bottom just make it to darn easy to hit Ok now the interesting one, the 3 hybrid. I came into this contest excited about every club in the bag bar one. I have never found a hybrid that I can consistently hit well and in the right direction. It was so bad that I had given up and had bought a 2 iron. I had fallen for that club and thought it was the one guaranteed to return to my bag at the end of this. When the club arrived I thought it looked great and sat well at address but I had been fooled before. I took it out to the course and it started well. Nice height and shot shape appeared but still that has happened before. I thought the horrible hooks will be here soon. Then I realized that we were three weeks into the challenge and I was still hitting this club really well. In fact it has become a go to club for difficult shots, lay ups, tricky tee shots and even the odd chip. It's easy to hit low draws around trees, high blasts from the fairway, lovely tee shots into long par threes that stop like irons. It is my favorite club in the bag and I don't say that lightly. If you are a player that struggles with long irons you have to try these hybrids. I think they will bring joy back to your long game goaliewales14, sirchunksalot, THEZIPR23 and 4 others 7 Quote In my cart Bag: Driver: King F9 9° - LH - Atmos Blue TS 6 Stiff Woods: King F9 - LH - 3/4 Wood - Atmos Blue 7 Reg Z U85 2 Iron Irons: T200 4 Iron AMT White S300 T100S - LH - 3-48* - AMT White S300 Wedges: Indi FLX- LH - 52° 56° 60° - True Temper Spinner Wedge shafts Putter: 2 Bar Hybrid Ball: Pro V1x Testing: Haywood CB/MB Combo Iron Set, 4-7 Cavity backs, 8-PW Muscle Backs, True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 Stiff, 2 Degrees stronger lofts. I think they will bring joy back to your long game Cobra continues to impress, I'm usually in the same boat you are, with not being able to hit hybrids. It's intriguing to hear review where the ball doesn't hook. I might have to try these out. Also, the Baffler rails are usually a big selling point for most people, do you feel like they help you at all?
