So, does no one want an Arccos set up?!?  I think I've seen maybe 5 guesses for this weeks forum challenge.

Come on fellow spies, let's hear what you really think about how much our golf game has changed over the challenge!

I'm really shocked at the low number too!

You're hurting my odds at winning Nunfa.  Seriously, if you got new clubs that didn't come with Arccos would you add it?

Given the restraints that we had (F9 products only) I wouldn't change anything.

We'll have our reviews on Arccos out soon.  I thought I knew my game pretty well before getting Arccos but it's definitely shown me a few things that I never considered before.

Have any of you used the new link system or is it still only phone in pocket for now?  I had arccos for awhile and it was a headache for me but that was a year ago so hopefully it has gotten better.  I'm looking forward to the write-ups.

The Arccos link is being rolled out in September from what I've read. This challenge has been phone in pocket for me.

I know a few testers have also used their Apple watch for shot tracking.

Arccos Review Time:

Overview:

Arccos as a whole is a solid product. Everything from basic GPS functions with and without elevation all the way to the strokes gained method and a full view of metrics for example:  GIR % hit on hole 8 of your home course across every round you've ever played. (Pretty freaking cool). I have a few minor things that I just don't like about it but those are also functions that I wouldn't normally have ever used in the situations that made me dislike them. It was just a part of the challenge. More on that later though.

GPS Functions

Perhaps the single most important on course function apart from picking up shots. It works, pretty well too if you ask me. You get elevation and without elevation estimates to front / middle / back as you would expect. You also get club recommendations at this screen which is pretty cool. If you're laying up you can get yardage to that spot and yardage from that spot, to the green all with one thumbpress. I really dig it. It took me a minute to get used to it but coming from 18 birdies, these functions are just lightyears ahead in my opinion.

Shot Tracking and Analytics

The strokes gained stuff seems to work although I really wouldn't know if it was or not. There is a lot of maintenance required in my opinion to have everything be accurate. Because Arccos uses sound + movement to pick up shots, chips often don't get picked up and pin position and first putt distance is nearly always wrong. So going back post round and editing every single hole is a must if you want to keep accurate stats. To add to this, these aren't small changes. I've seen my putting handicap for a round drop 10 strokes because arccos had my first putt distance significantly off from what really happened.

The analytics part is really cool. Probably my favorite thing about the platform. Alot of people who I talk to about Arccos have this go-to line of "I already know what I'm bad at, I don't need a computer to tell me". Yeah thats cool, but did you know that from 85-100 yards you only hit greens 70% of the time but from 105-125 you hit greens 95% of the time? Or that your distance to pin on pitches greater than 35 yards is 30 feet? and that you've hit that shot 114 times? maybe you should practice those pitches more? Or practice your putting from that distance more.

Things like that really set Arccos apart from just "O look I improved at approach shots this round" type of mentality. Its a nerds tool and you can dig in as far as you want. Course stats show that I had never hit the green on hole 4 of my home course. It's a 190 yd par 3 with a massive bunker left. A little arccos research made me realize I was taking too much club and that by mising the green left in that bunker or short of it my chances of getting out with a par were abysmal. Instead I chose a shorter club and aimed for the right front of the green and got my first par ever after hitting the front of the green. There is limitless opportunity to find places you can shave strokes off if you have the willingness to take a look. Is your FIR % on a certain hole less than 50%? Take an iron and just stay in play and get a par instead of a bogey or a bogey instead of a double...

Here's a screenie of my home course, one of my favorite parts of the analytics system:

310787269_ScreenShot2019-08-02at3_48_21PM.thumb.png.0a8eb9786d214baaaf4f9698805d9b38.png

Anyways, at this point I'm rambling I just really love this part of the system....

Caddie

Caddie is the most incongruous part of the system. Every other aspect of Arccos feels unusually well polished and detailed, almost over the top in the amount of things you can do and dig into. Caddie feels like an unfinished afterthought. When it works..which is not very often (7/18 tee boxes for me) it gives decent recommendations as long as the hole isn't a dogleg in any direction. I actually found myself standing on several tee boxes hoping that it wouldn't work so I didn't have to deal with whatever random club and path it wanted me to take to the hole. Robertson had a great example of the problems that can arise from a tee box.

Its not just that it doesn't account for these annoying things called trees, it also forces you to make some really poor decisions. Like standing in a fairway bunker and having to take out a 3H...

For me there is enough value in Arccos without having to use the Caddie function, but if you are considering buying it just for that, I would say forego the purchase until we get some better updates.

Here is the error that constantly plagues me which is sad because the teebox is the kind of place where I really need all the help I can get:

Wow, it's hard to believe that this is really the last week of our challenge and the final review we have left.  Time sure has flown by!

My experience with Arccos is very similar to @bardle.  He did a fantastic job in his review so if you haven't seen it do yourself a favor and read it.

The good:

Arccos is probably the cheapest and easiest way for average golfers like us to get tour level analytics on our game.  I was worried that it would take a huge chunk of the summer getting used to the new Cobra clubs but with Arccos tracking every shot I understood distances, strengths, and weaknesses of the new sticks in just a few short rounds.  It's a great resource to have all of your usage statistics available at the click of a button.

IMG_1095.PNG.76accee042580cccedd5c5be7396c93a.PNGIMG_1094.PNG.ebe8a8e2d0c1889f709e7fa2677302b9.PNG
Might have to work on that 5 iron a little more.

The good part of Arccos Caddie is that it gives you multiple club choices both on the tee and for approach shots.  On this par 5 it said my best option was a 3 wood off the tee, but I could also try driver or 3H.  For the 2nd shot I could go for the green with a 4h, lay up with a 6 iron, or hit my 50° wedge which would give me a full 58° wedge to the green.

IMG_1093.jpg.ba68af05ca307262e7b399dec4d5fae9.jpgIMG_1071.PNG.2e6d767f7251735f918a8c0119faac7a.PNG

The Bad:

While I didn't have more than a handful of issues with Arccos picking up full shots I had to adjust the pin location and my first putt distance on pretty much every single hole.  The app does offer a Siri shortcut to mark the pin but the GPS doesn't always update fast enough for that to be accurate.  That and I didn't want to subject myself to my playing partners ridicule talking to Siri on every green.  One of the reasons Arccos Link was delayed until September was to add in a pin location button.  Hopefully that solves most of the issues on the greens.

The Ugly:

While Arccos Caddie is a great idea the execution is severely lacking.  I like to play relatively quickly on the course and taking an extra 5-10 seconds before every shot to wait for Caddie to load is a deal breaker for me.  If this was not a challenge week I would most likely only use the Caddie feature if I was playing a brand new course or had a truly difficult or unusual shot.

Another huge drawback is when you have a blocked shot.  Caddie doesn't seem to be able to recognize being in tree trouble and gives you options assuming your path is completely free and clear.  The recommendation for the below shot was a standard 50° wedge.  In reality I was completely blocked and my only options were to punch out sideways or hit something that stayed less than 10 feet off the ground.

IMG_1074.PNG.18976e98aec91051852f0682da513ed8.PNGIMG_1075.JPG.2020f50c13c3e072b87e3ef1309300fc.JPG

The final verdict:

You would be very hard pressed to find a more robust shot tracking system in the same price range as Arccos.  Once the contest is over I'll definitely keep using the system to track my rounds and help determine where I should spend my limited practice time.  Unfortunately I won't be using the Caddie feature unless I'm playing a brand new course or serious improvements are implemented.
