Whats in the Bag - FNQ

Recommended Posts

A WITB from Far North Queensland (FNQ). A mixed bag of old and new, traditional and high tech.

  • Driver - Cobra F9 with HZRDUS Smoke 6.0 (tipped 3/4")  set to 9°. The 14gm weight in the back of the head and a 10gm weight is in the front. I like a heavier swing weight.
  • Fairway - Cobra F9 3-4 wood with HZRDUS Smoke 6.5 set to 15.5°. 4gm Tungsten weight added to sole near leading edge to add swing weight and reduce spin.
  • 2 Iron - Mizuno MP-H5 with DG X100 shaft. Used for really tight fairways or really long par 3's.
  • 3 Hybrid - Ping G30 19° hybrid with stock stiff soft. I use this one for 210-215 yard shots out of the rough and bad lies, or  where I need it to stop quick. The softer shaft helps get extra height.
  • 4-5 Iron - Mizuno JPX 850 Forged with DG X100 shaft.
  • 6-PW - Mizuno MP-64 irons with KBS Tour FLT 130 (X-flex) shafts.
  • Sand Wedge - Mizuno T7 56° wedge with DG S300 shaft.
  • Lob Wedge - Callaway PM Grind 58° (bent to 59°) at 1° flat with stock KBS shaft.
  • Putter - Evnroll ER7CS in 33"
  • Golf Ball -  I've been using the Srixon Z-Star, but currently testing the Snell MTB-X.

I'm currently considering replacing my irons with either Callaway X-Forged 18 irons or a combo set of Mizuno MP-18 irons (SC in PW-6 and MMC in 5-4) as they are now 5 years old. I may also add a 50° T7 gap wedge and drop the Ping hybrid out of the bag.

Nice! Just outta curiosity, what's your reasoning between the different varieties of irons?

The rough can be pretty thick and tangly on the courses here, so if you hit a long iron just a touch fat it's going nowhere. The JPX 850 Forged long irons (4 and 5) have a slightly wider sole and larger face to help get through the rough a bit better and help a little on mishits (high or toe side).  The PM Grind wedge is better out of the bunker and the rough around greens for me than any wedge I've used, so it's stayed in the bag for quite a while. I don't see it going anywhere until its replaced with a new model PM grind wedge. As for the MP-H5 2-iron, the head and shaft combo gives me the best results of any driving iron I've every used. It just works.

So, pretty much the reasons for the mix are all down to the experimenting and going where the results lead (backed by data from game golf).

That's a nice setup you've assembled. For the longest time I've played a somewhat mixed bag. There's no rule that you have to play only with the clubs/irons that are sold as a set. Play with what works!
