For those who have been following this thread and are intrigued by the review, let me point out the cheapest deal that I've seen for these balls recently. GolfDiscount.com has six-packs of these Srixons for $10 each, so $20/dozen.

might have just ordered a few dozen myself.

I think it was $8 or so, or free over $99. So order 10 (6 dozen) for $100 (plus tax).

When I look at the cut Srixon Z Star and XV they look like two and three piece balls, respectively.  I assume one of the layers must be very thin.  Is that the case?  The halved balls look nothing like the drawings on the website with the full cores.

https://www.srixon.com/us/balls/golf-balls/z-star-xv-golf-balls/MZSTARXV18.html

More curious than anything else.

Thanks,

Jeff

If you're referring to the MGS ball guide, the layers in the Z and ZXV are a little tough to see. I believe the XV has another layer just between the core and the mantle (I guess that's what that is called?) before the cover.

ballgallery_22.jpg

Just outside of the pink core, there's a thin brown layer.

ballgallery_20.jpg

The regular Z-star just doesn't seem to have a color that is easy to distinguish from the rest of its insides, but if you look REALLY hard you can see it. Or, my eyes and brain are creating a bias since it thinks there should be a core there haha!

This is a good question - if you look at the Z Star for example you have a cover, a mantle layer and a core. The XV has a cover, a mantle and a dual core.

Since I have been testing these balls I have quite literally played the golf of my life. I have shot two PB (one with each ball) rounds and just consistently low scores and nothing else has changed except the golf ball. These balls are both so good around the greens, while for me, the XV is longer off the tee and rolls the ball so great with the putter. I have had my best putting rounds EVER with this ball. I don't think this ball is magic or anything but I do think it fits my game quite well. I'm really grateful for the MGS Ball Test, as well as, the opportunity to test the Srixon offerings for the community and myself.

Played a new to me course today. All 18 holes with one Z-Star. This ball is great. It really is. All of my full iron shots and pitch shots inside 70yds stopped within 1 foot of their pitch mark.

Here are just a few examples:

34FFA97C-B48D-454D-9534-2011E893A38E.thumb.jpg.488453dc98f6c7c1ddf6884392e5e789.jpg

Had some really tight chip and run shots as well.

This ball is very similar to the XV, but for me, the extra distance off the driver is the only real tangible advantage for the XV (and who doesn’t want a few more yards off the tee). More on that in my stats analysis in the final Stage 2 review, so be sure to tune in!

The XV does everything the Z-Star does, but it’s just overall a bit better fit for my game.

So this is the extent of the damage to the Z-Star I played today. You have to really look hard to try to find some minor scuffing. I’d play this ball into play again next time no questions asked. Durability is solid.

I hit a lot of wedge shots from 100yds - 48yds.

I played bothe the Z star and Z- Star xv. They play good and feel nice out of the box and first couple holes. I found myself replacing them more frequently though and didn't like the feel of them once they had been used a bit. Unlike the prov1 and prov1x.  I gamed them for years and would play them until they were pretty much unplayable. Now I am enjoying the tp5,  which I started playing only because I found one and loved the way it felt it hand. Played it and loved it even more. Dont have a tp5 in hand (left them im n my locker) but these two saw about the same playing time.

Hit any cart path or trees with the Srixon in that picture? What type of wedges do you play? I play Vokey SM7’s and they hold up fine for me.

As I commented earlier on someone else’s post, some people’s playability condition/level of scuffing is stricter than others. Like for me and my budget, I keep balls in play that others might not.

The TP5 and 5x are really great balls - I have played them for the last several years with good success. This is my first exposure to the Srixon offerings and I have been really pleased with them in every area including durability but the truth is that all tour caliber balls use the same basic cover composition and when played throughout the course of a round will experience damage due to repeated hits. I think most of the time it is a ball that has poor durability that sticks out more to me than really great due to the cover. I remember balata balls and when they were hit poorly or hit a tree, cart path, etc - they were ready for the trash and when the ProV1 came out it was a game changer. Titleist are the undisputed "King of the Hill" in the golf ball industry and clearly make phenomenal balls. For Srixon or Taylormade or anyone else to steal any kind of market share they have to be doing something really special and I believe Srixon is. That said, you can NEVER go wrong with Titleist - they make an absolutely exceptional ball in terms of performance and durability and if I had to choose which ball specifically to play from the pictures you have shown, I would play the Titleist. Do I think Titleist is more durable in general over Srixon? No not based on my testing but your experience may be different and that's why we have so many great balls to test! Thanks for the pics and for making this thread even better and welcome to MGS!

I haven't smashed any cart paths or trees lately. At the most clipped some leaves on a fade off the tee box starting left. I use some older tvd vokeys sm4 I believe  and a sm6. They are good balls and I brought a bunch for my dad, as he's less picky and he really enjoys them.

Golfertrb, thank you for the welcome. I agree and think for the balls at this price point you really can't go wrong with any of them. Just like drivers, putters, and recent fairway woods. Most of the major players are offering quality options at a high level and it falls down to personal preference. For me right now it's the tp series or proV.

I think I see a thin layer between the core and the second layer on the XV, but don't see it on the Z Star.  That said, I will take your word for it!  Maybe I will find one and cut it open, or test a sleeve.

We will be posting our Stage 2's this week and I'm really looking forward to hearing what the other testers have to say. I played a quick 12 or so holes tonight and it just totally confirmed again my thoughts about these balls. I have thoroughly enjoyed this test and the dialogue this thread has produced.

Be watching for Stage 2's in the next few days!

I played a 2 day tourney Friday & Saturday and followed up with casual game yesterday on Sunday. I played the Srixon XV in yellow most of these 3 days......I'd say 80% of the time. I sprinkled in some Yellow Prov1x's I had in the bag, and found a TP5x which I played for 3 holes. Of this, my "feeling" was that it "appeared and seemed to me" the Srixon XV was either spinning more with the short irons and wedges.......or something about the cover makes it appear so b/c I seemed to get alot more balls spinning back, or others I call "rippers" where it really ripped back and some then resulting in catching the slope and going away.

This was being seen again yesterday playing a muni in Norman called Westwood, greens were pretty soft and rolling nice nicely.......with the Srixon XV lots hitting and coming back, even on half wedge shots in the 85-95yd range, which surprised me. I did finally take the SrixonXV out of play on about #13 as it was appearing to show a form of a "crack" forming around the circumference of the ball, half way around which maybe resembled a seam line???? Odd, looking, showed to my playing partners and holstered it. Put the yellow Prov1x back in play and again noticed the ball stopped spinning back by feet but instead was hitting and generally staying near its pitch mark. Odd

I enjoyed the XV quite alot

My daughter graduated in 2014 - perhaps their paths crossed.  My work life changed recently and I only have Sundays off these days and I try and play after church, if possible.  Would love to play sometime!.

I'm not finding any 'cashback' spin with the XV- soft greens yesterday and all shots stopping close to pitch marks, furthest was a 5 iron and that was about 15 feet away. Prov1's I found came back too much with some coming off the green.

I really need to try the normal Z star as well as the XV is good but there is def a firm/harder feel than a prov1

Thus the need to try multiple balls as every golfer's angle of attack, spin, launch, etc. is different.  The same ball can perform totally differently for two different golfers!

Westwood is a good little track - played there a few times this year due to my kids living in Norman. That's really weird about the cover - do you have a picture you could share? That's totally nuts. I haven't had anything like that happen or even close.

I have found the XV spin really well but I've not had them spin back too much. With a firmly struck 9 iron on down I can get spin back but only a foot or so. Glad you enjoyed it!

Played two more rounds this past weekend with the XV and thought I'd update how it went. My first round was a complete and total meltdown of my golf swing, but it was no fault of the ball. My iron play completely left the States and resided somewhere around Fiji. Still loved the performance of the ball, especially putting and around the green. I did hit a personal best drive of 276 yards which was the highlight of the round.

My second round I tied a personal best score (89) and had two balls almost go in on chips (stupid flagsticks). I have a lot of confidence in this ball around the greens, it's just fun to chip and easy to control.

I'm loving this ball more and more each time I play.

another round with the XV today and the course and greens are soft. Still no spin back - Prov1's spin back a lot in soft conditions - around the greens I'm still feeling they are 'firm' not hard but they are not giving me the 'feel' I get with Prov1's. I'm hoping the normal Z Star (when I find a shop that sells them) will give me the feel and distance I get with Prov1's but the durability and whiteness of a Z Star

I bet the Z Star will be just what you are looking for. Such a good ball. Let us know when you get some!
