KevinE
Played twice this weekend...High heat (over 100 heat index) and humidity. I will say this emphatically, the Snell MTB's durability was much greater than mine. Don't know how you Southern boys do it all summer long. edingc
Rain ruined my chance to play Sunday, so I finally got to get out an play nine holes this morning with the MTB-X. Some quick thoughts as someone who has been playing the MTB Black all season before today: The MTB-X definitely feels firmer. I actually like it more this way. Off the driver it just feels better for me. Seemed to be lower spin off driver, though I didn't put too many good driver swings on it. I did have two 250+ drives, which isn't above or below average for me. I say it's slightly lower spin because my mishits seemed a little better than with the MTB Black. Probably slightly less spin than the MTB Black on full iron shots. Had a couple that took a big bounce before settling down about 5-8 yards from the ball mark. Had a surprising amount of spin around the green on chips and pitches with my 54 degree wedge. Visible spinning and slowing on a 45-yard pitch into No. 9 green. Durability seems fine. I hit parts of five trees, a couple tree roots, but no cart path or gravel. There are a few marks on the ball (played all nine holes with it), but it will easily go another nine or more holes. I did wipe a little of the Optic Yellow finish off with a full 54 degree, but no damage to the cover that I could really feel. Overall, very happy with the ball. The MTB-X will be gamer for the foreseeable future as I now have 3.5 dozen to play with thanks to @yungkory! newballcoach, yungkory, josmi15 and 3 others 6 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. After playing the MTB-X for 72 holes now, I think I would have written a nearly identical review. I like the MTB Black, but love the firmer feel and better iron spin of the MTB-X. My first ball lasted 29 holes before I donated it to the forest, and there was no noticeable damage despite smacking quite a few trees. My second ball has now seen 24 holes of play and is showing a little more wear and scuffs. I took two healthy 54 degree wedge swings during my last round and definitely took some of the Optic Yellow finish off. I have three of the MTB X balls left, and about two dozen of the Black, so at some point I'll be back to playing the Black exclusively. That's when I'll really decide whether I miss the added spin in my irons with the X, or whether I prefer the slightly reduced spin with the Black. gchester33
Stage II review is up including some graphs showing performance differences between the MTB-X and Chrome Soft. And by differences I mean, a lack of differences really. Wish I could have said I loved the ball and think everyone should play it, but I did not see any observable improvements when using the Snell. Still stand behind Snell as a company and what they're doing but I think unless you're an incredibly consistent ballstriker (i.e. not me) and have a high swing speed (> 100 mph) then I can't imagine you'll see a measurable difference. But hey, YMMV. Thanks MGS for letting me do this again! edingc
Maybe it's the yellow finish showing more damage, but I will say those who do not like to play balls with any visible blemishes will go through these pretty quickly. This ball has 34 holes on it. I'm not generally gentle to balls, often hitting a lot of trees, but the last 27 holes this ball played have been pretty clean by my standards. Definitely a good amount of flaking and damage of the yellow cover. The damaged areas don't feel like a scuff, however. I'm going to keep playing this one until it's donated to a lake or forest, but others might not. Distance-wise, I averaged 248 off the tee during my last nine holes. I've noticed more markedly more distance with the MTB-X than the Black in general since switching. I shot 18 hole rounds of 82, 80 and 79 with it, so I figured it deserved a spot on my "trophy" shelf at work. There was definitely more cover damage on the ball than in this picture, but she still flew straight and true for me. I love this ball. During my work scramble last week, I played MTB Blacks as I have a dozen or so left. They definitely are a different feeling ball compared to the MTB-X. The Blacks are definitely softer off the driver and irons. They feel the same when putting in my opinion. I personally find the MTB-X to be more responsive on short chips and pitches around the green. I definitely will be sticking with the X as I feel like that is a huge advantage over the Blacks for me. Whats your driver swing speed? 100+, trending lower during morning rounds and higher during afternoon/evening rounds. Highest my Swing Caddie has recorded on the range this season was 108, most swings tend to be 100-104, sometimes more, sometimes a bit less. My average driver distance since switching to the MTB-X has been 235 yards, some real awful ones included in there though. A good drive for me is 250+ total, and I managed 280 and 301 during an evening round on a particularly dry day this summer. bellairemi
I have really liked the performance overall with the MTB-X but it does feel hard off some of my clubs, especially the driver. Been finding myself reaching for the OnCore Elixirs in my bag before the Snells (and I pull both before the few Titleists I have left) as the OnCore feels much softer to me and the performance difference is not enough to affect my scoring. Having grown up in the balata age, I still lean towards softer feeling balls. revkev
DaveP043
An update, I just ordered 5 dozen MTB Black. After going back to the Black for the last few weeks, I've decided that I simply don't need the additional spin from the irons that I saw with the MTB-X. That doesn't mean its not an excellent golf ball, just that my personal preference was for slightly less spin. Personal preference is the reason they make different golf balls. I agree with you. Both the Black and the X are excellent balls. I prefer the X for the spin. Still have a dozen blacks that I'll likely play this winter when the greens are softer (aka wetter from the PNW weather ) sirchunksalot 1 Quote Driver: Rogue ST Max (10.5* set at -1 and neutral) -- Mitsubishi Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Fairway: Rogue ST Max 3 wood (16.5*) and Heaven Wood (20*)-- Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Hybrids: Rogue ST Max 5H (23*)--Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Irons: Apex CF19 6-9, PW, AW -- KBS Tour Graphite TGI 70 shafts R +1/2 inch 3* upright Wedges: Edison 53* and 57* KBS PGI 80 Graphite +1/2 inch 2* upright Putter: L.A.B. Having grown up in the balata age, I still lean towards softer feeling balls. That’s so interesting to me - I grew up with Balata as well - I find so called soft balls today about as much like Balata as a McDonalds Burger is to what I make on my grill.Fake feel, nothing like the real thing. Balata balls were substantial IMO, you knew you hit them when you hit them - any of the current softies feel like marshmallows to me. And they don’t go as far or spin as well. Other than that they’re okay I guess. :)I realize some people like them and again there’s a reason why there are lots of different balls out there.
