Looking for some old/cheap blades

Just as the title says. I play rouge pro irons right now but when I go out to the course with my wife I just play from her tee with only irons. I thought it would be fun to play with some blades just to kinda add a little something else to the game. Would like something under $100 in a perfect world. $200 would probably be my max. Anyone got any ideas on where I can look? I know people sometimes find gems in Goodwill so I will look there whenever I get a chance. Any other ideas?

Thanks

You could go old school and use persimmon and irons from the 70s. My local shop sells these classic iron sets for $10 and the persimmon woods are like $10 each. Could probably get them to throw in on of the bullseye models they have as well.

Been looking around ebay here and there, looks like some solid buys there. @cnosil Are those the ones with wood shafts? I think I am looking for something a little more modern than that.

Not quite that old they have steel instead of hickory. I have never played hickory and started playing in the 80s. There is actually a market for newly made hickory clubs.

Finding newer blades in reasonably good condition for under $200 will be difficult unless you luck out.  However, I would look at vintage sets like Macgregor for a decent set between $100-200.  I have a set of Macgregor Tourney VIP MBs that are quite nice.  Look for a set of Macgregor Jack Nicklaus clubs on eBay.  Maybe Ben Hogan Apex and Wilson Staff also

There is a whole golfing world of guys that play vintage blades and persimmon woods, myself included. I’ve owned and played Macgregor, Wilson, and Hogan’s from the 1950’s through the 2000’s. For me personally I found Wilson to make the most easy to play blades of the classic designs as the leading edge was a bit more rounded and weight was located low to get the ball up in the air. I think the 1958 Wilson Dynapowered irons is one of the finest sets of irons ever produced.

For persimmon woods Macgregor was really head and shoulders above all other club makers from after WWll until the late 1980’s, although smaller makers like Stan Thompson, George Ivette and others mad some really good persimmon clubs as well.

Woods found at thrift stores can definitely be playable but will need a bit of work as the insert many times is loose and the sole plate will need to be sealed up.

I have some real choice sets of woods and iron available. Shoot me a private message if you are interested.

I vote for Wilson FG17 irons.  Classic muscle backs.  Ones in nice condition can be found on ebay for less than $100.  I have a set that I pull out once in a while.  The most forgiving blades I've ever hit.  VERRRY soft when hit on the sweet spot.  You should know that the lofts are much weaker than modern irons.  You will need to take one or two extra clubs depending on what you play now.

14 of the following:

Ping G430 Max

Callaway Epic Max 3 wood

Callaway Epic Max 5 wood

Cobra F9 Speedback 7/8 wood set at 23.5 degrees

Callaway Epic Max 11 wood

PXG 0211ST 6-GW

Cobra LTx 5-GW (never hit the 5)

Hogan sand wedge 56 degree bent to 54

Maltby M Series+ 54 degree

Ping Glide 3.0 Eye2 58 degree

Ping Glide 3.0 60 degree

Evnroll ER2

Ping Sigma 2 Anser

Thanks for all the input everyone. I have decided to hold off on the endeavor for a little bit. Went out and shot a 99 which was mostly due to forgetting how to hit my current irons for the round. I'm just gonna grind out my current irons for a while till I can "figure it out" again.  LOL

I’ve got a set of old McGregor blades if you ever want to pick the search back up.

Go to EBay and search Mizuno T-Zoid Pro II irons. Great forged blade and there are quit a few listed.
