Popular Post PMookie
Since last summer when I played golf in Kentucky with a childhood friend, we talked about playing Valhalla in Louisville since he has a contact there. My work schedule hasn’t taken me up there since last year until this week. I called my buddy a few weeks ago to let him know I was heading up there the week of the 4th. Being a golf pro at a course, he can’t take vacation that week, so it was perfect. He texted me Wednesday to see when I was going to be available in order to set-up a couple rounds. Well, yesterday he lets me know we play Valhalla at 3pm Sunday!!!! So cool. Best part about it? It’s FREE! I’ve already been on the course’s site to look at the holes. Looks pretty tough, especially the greens! I’ve been praying the last couple days that I bring a decent game with me. He’s great to play with, and I’m sure we’ll be put with a member, or one of the pros. I can’t wait! This will be the first time I will have played a PGA Championship/Ryder Cup course! Unreal.I’ll try to get as many pics as possible and post them. My flight is at 6am tomorrow, so I have to get-up at 3am! Not looking forward to that, but I’m hoping my adrenaline kicks-in at 3pm and lasts until we’re through. Here’s a link to the Valhalla website:https://www.valhallagolfclub.comHere are the major events they’ve hosted And it turns out that the Ruder Cup here was the one Azinger Captained! Kenny B
Awesome!!! Don't get intimidated! Just enjoy the round!! A friend of mine got invited to play Firestone many years ago. He had the worst round of his life because he was afraid to take a divot; the grass was so pretty!! Play it like any other course. Popular Post PMookie
Wow. What a day! Valhalla was incredible. From the customer service, to the carts, to the course, it was top-notch! Everything was first class. Our host was a former Tour Rep for Powerbilt golf back in the 80s and 90s! He’s been inside the ropes with players at every major, and worked the Tour for many years. He’s single, 71, and can still hit a drive 250! Just a super nice man, a very good golfer, and a great host. The other 2 in our group were my buddy from childhood, a PGA Pro at Gibson Bay in Richmond, KY, and his Assistant who was a D2 All-American golfer. Sean, the Asst Pro, and I decided to ride together and played one tee up from the tips, so it was just shy of 7,000 yards. I wanted ALMOST the full experience! When I sat down in the cart the first time, I thought the seat felt a little different... The seats were super plush, like in an Escalade, and it turned-out all of the carts were that plush. Sheesh...The course was amazing.... The rough was around four inches long of Kentucky Bluegrass. If one went beyond that, there was heather.... I got to experience that twice. The whole round long, when we’d get to certain holes, Mr. Armbruster, or Jason, my childhood friend, would say, “You remember when Tiger made a putt, and went running after it, pointing at it the hole way? That was THIS hole.” Or, “Remember when JB Holmes bombed his drive in the Ryder Cup, and the place went nuts for how far he hit it? That was this hole, and he cleared that bunker!” It was crazy to know those shots and realize I was in the same spot they happened! I played well for stretches, but got on the bogey-train for a good stretch of holes. We had a one-hour rain/lightning delay just as we hit the 12th. That ended-up costing me some money because I bought another shirt and poker chip... I had already bought a hat and polo! I also took the opportunity to take a bunch of pictures around the clubhouse. My favorite was the board with all of the scores from each day of the 2008 Ryder Cup. So cool. I ended-up shooting 88 (42/46). My driver cost me 6 shots, all pushes, three were lost, the other three cost me to have to just punch-out from the rough or heather. I actually putted very well, and Aimpoint had my reads dead-on. I left 7 putts short, inside a foot... The greens were perfect, of course, but not super fast. The lies in the fairway were a little bit tight, and I had numerous shots with slight sidehill lies, thinning all of them, but there wasn’t a blade out of place, and the fore Caddie took care of any bunkers we hit from, all of our fairway divots, and all divots on the green. That dude WORKED, and it was over 90* until it rained! It was an amazing day, and I’ll never forget it. I looked-up the Top 100 courses in the US, and Valhalla sits at 89........ I’m not quite sure that there are 88 better courses. No way. From 1996-2008, they had a Major or the Ryder Cup every four years. That’s pretty stout! I’m very happy I can say I played there. Now I want to go back and watch highlights of Tiger’s PGA Championship there, and the Ryder Cup!!! I took a ton of pics, so here you go. FYI, in most of the pics you’ll see Jason and Mr Armbruster in their tee box. I took the pics from where Sean and I teed off, except on a par 3 on the back... I hate I missed that pic! Up on a ridge, 210 to the pin. Breath-taking... I forgot my phone in the cart.Tee shot, split fairway. shot into the greenThe par 3 I missed the pic of from our tee was up above this green. 18 tee Looking back down 18 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro perseveringgolfer, downlowkey, MattF and 9 others 7 5 Quote Driver: Ping G430 Max 9*, Ping Tour 70X Fairway: Ping G425 15*, Ping Tour 70X Hybrid: Ping G425 22*, Ping Tour 80X Irons: Ping i230 4-GW, TT DG X100 Wedges: SMS 50D/54V/58DModus 130 stiff, +1” Putter: EAS 1.0 Ball: Titleist 2023 AVX
