Not for the Bengals he won’t. He has amazing talent and all the potential in the world but we have seen talented QB’s end up on bad teams before and never recover.

It is one of the good rivalries for sure. If you remember I said I grew up in south western Michigan, just north of K-Zoo. We always got the ND games on the bunny ears, and sometimes couldn’t get the Michigan games. I liked the gold helmets, but my dad said he’d disown me if I were a ND fan...

Had to drive around and listen to the games in my dads work van. Fond memories of hearing that FM static and “Touch Down Michigan!”

Weren’t many haters then, they didn’t have to worry about who was tweeting what.

My $0.02 after the weekend:

I feel like the selection committee did the right thing with LSU #1. I had not seen Georgia play at all this year, but either LSU is that good or Georgia was overrated, possibly a little bit of both. If OSU had played the entire game like the second half, I would see no reason to bump them, but LSU has more quality wins and the first half for OSU was very shaky.

I see a lot of talk about Clemson: I have no doubt they are good, but they have only played two ranked teams this year - an apparently overrated Texas A&M and Virginia, so they don't really look like they've been tested. The Fiesta Bowl will be interesting.

LSU is really good, but Georgia had some key players injured or suspended, so they didn't have the horses to compete with the LSU juggernaut.

Frankly, regardless of who Clemson has or hasn't played, I'd like to point out that they have won 28 straight games, and haven't lost a game in almost 2 years.  Overlooking them or assuming they are an easy out would be a mistake.  

My prediction is that LSU and Clemson end up in the championship game, but I don't see anyone beating LSU this year.  There is just too much talent and too much Joe Burrow for anyone to handle.

I don't think any one is over-looking Clemson - there is a reason the Vegas lines opened with them as favorites and the #1 seed was important to avoid Clemson in the semi, I just don't know much about them except what I can read/look up on the internet.

Well it's looking like you might get your wish. I hear rumors that 3 or 4 of Bama's high draft picks are sitting to avoid injury. I don't know if it's true though.

 

UGA only drops to 5 because their SOS is so good and their game control was still decent. 7 quality wins, 22nd SOS, 3 T25 wins, and 9th in game control. Despite the butt whipping, they have the 5th best body of work overall.
Comparing them to Oregon who's ranked 6th, has Oregon with the 39th SOS, 2 T25 wins, 5 quality wins, and 7th in game control.

Trevor Lawrence will get drafted with a top 3 pick whenever he becomes draft eligible.  Travis Etienne is a legit NFL RB.  Clemson's defensive front 7 matches up with any team in NCAA Div 1.

Basically if Lawrence is on his game you can't stop Clemson, because Etienne always brings it, and as a defense you have to decide who you want to shut down, and you can't shut down both.  If you stop the run, Lawrence just finds the open receiver, or runs for 20 yards before you know he was running on the play.

Sure, I get it, Clemson plays in a basketball conference that totally sucks this year in football.  I mean, I live here in FSU country and they just totally suck, but Clemson has been blowing people out for the past 3+ years in a totally non-competitive fashion.  Dabo has a powerhouse up there and if anyone can give LSU a game it's them.  But I just think LSU's defense is better than Clemson's, at least in the secondary.  And if I had to pick between Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence, I'd take Burrow every day of the week, and twice on Saturdays.  He's that good.

Ps: I know what game control is on the big picture, but how do they get the stats? And does it work out for all games that teams win?

At least Lane is consistent from gig to gig. Baylor opens up next season against Ole Miss in Houston. I can't wait to see how many ole miss babies Kiff will kiss during the game.

I certainly didn't come up with it! haha Look, when I post stats and what team I think will be ranked higher it's not because I'm pulling for said team(unless it's Bama obviously) or because I think said team should even be ranked higher than another one. It's purely because I found a couple of guys who seems to have figured out how the playoff committee ranks teams(with a small margin of error). They've nailed the top 4 in the final rankings each of the last 3 or 4 years or however long I've been following them. I'm just passing along info.

 

ESPN does have a metric for game control, but it's not the one the committee uses. I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, game control came into existence via the committee. They don't give out specifics on how to calculate it, but it's basically a metric of how in control of game a team is when it matters. Basically, how bad can you beat the crap out of someone in the first half. For closer games, I've been told to "think of it as a minute by minute, how a game got to it's final conclusion." Or lead per minute in relation to final outcome.

For an example, lets use The Tide from last season against Oklahoma: Bama jumped out to at 28-0 lead in the second quarter and then 31-10 lead at the half. Despite some garbage time TDs from OU, there was never any real question that Tide was ever going to lose that game. The 45-34 score was closer than the game ever actually was.

I think game control is the committee's "eye test." They don't use it as a standalone metric but rather, if a team has a bad SOS then their game control better be very good. See Clemson this year. Or if 2 teams have similar game control but one has a much harder SOS then that team gets the nod.

 

The "this is all an algorithm" argument was first presented to me like this: The Committee is made up of 14 busy people. They have roughly 60 hours from when they last game ends on Saturday, to when they have to have the top 25 created on Tuesday. 20 of those hours have to go to sleep and they have their regular jobs an responsibilities as well. Their is no way that each of these individuals can watch all the games or even break down each team in this amount of time. Thus, this has to be made simpler. It all comes down to the numbers.

 

Edit: TLDR: Game control= Get up big early and preferably stay up big

The state of Iowa is in morning tonight:  legendary Coach Haden Fry died today at the age of 90.  

 

I was a junior at Iowa when he came to the university.  We'd had 17 straight loosing seasons.  Three years later, we were in the Rose Bowl.  

 

Perhaps his biggest contribution to the game was his coaching tree.  

 

Not bad for a boy from Odessa Texas transplanted to the corn fields of Iowa.  

 

I think I'll raise a glass to his memory.
