I went to App State for undergrad, LSU for grad school, and worked in LSU’s athletic dept.

Can someone with more football knowledge explain to me why teams like Auburn can upset a giant on occasion and Michigan folds like a $2 chair?

I’ve been trying to figure this out since they hired Harbaugh. But even before that they were never quite “there”... before Hoke and Rich Rod (those are the dark years)... Even Lloyd struggled in the big games.

The Big House had 106,000+ people there today to watch an absolute blow out. And if you looked closely enough there was waaay too much red in that stadium.

Michigan fans just say forget it?

Someone shed some light for me please.

I’m not even mad, Ohio State played a great game and congratulations to them and their fan base for eclipsing Michigan in the overall Win % today.

One thing that has always stuck-out to me about MSU vs UofM is how State gets the 3 star guy, maybe a four, and they coach them-up! Jud used to do that at State too. UofM football never seems to have guys better after four years than when they came-in. Maybe I’m off, but it just doesn’t seem like the players really improve or play above their “grade”.

With the new transfer stuff I think we lose DCaff or Milty next year.

Did not see this coming.  I was a Chris Petersen fan when he was with Boise State, but then he went to UW .  Does he have some NFL aspirations?

@PMookie I have known this kid since he was in elementary school.  All State in football for 3 years including state player of the year.  Three time state wrestling champion.  Also carried a career .600 batting average on the baseball team.  Just an all-around incredible athlete.

I never took Peterson as a "lifer" in terms of coaching career like a Saban, Bowden or Beamer.  Not to mention, he has made no secret of the fact he wants to be an Athletic Director someday.  He may be at a point in his life where he is ready to begin transitioning in that direction.

You know, after thinking about it some more, and taking my emotion and hatred of all things Alabama out of the equation, my gut still says to me that Alabama is still the best team in college football.  They scored over 40+ points against their two biggest rivals and still lost.  Yeah, their defense needs work, but put them on a neutral field against any other team, and don't you think Alabama still comes out on top?

And not that I would ever become an Alabama apologist, but if you think this through rationally, I'd still put money on Alabama to beat any other team in the country, straight up.  Saban is just too good.  And I don't think Alabama has lost anything honestly.  They just had some bad breaks against Auburn and a fluke 1 second field goal that shouldn't have been allowed at the end of the first half.

Again, hate Alabama personally, and detest Saban with every fiber of my being, but looking at it rationally, they are still the best, and everyone else is playing for the scraps - including Clemson.

If they got Moses and the other 2 starters back on defense, it would look much different. Starting 6 freshman was just too much this year without Moses in the middle to hold it together.

I think Mac is good but I don't think I can back this argument atm. Maybe if Tua was still healthy. I just pray that a few of the juniors that are draft eligible come back next year. I'm not sure what to expect the team to look like next year. Could be stacked. Could be similar to this year's team with a better defense and downgraded offense.

I can't believe I'm making this argument, but take any college football team and match them up against Alabama on a neutral field, and I'd take Alabama to win that game.  And if anything, I bet Vegas would have Alabama favored in any game, against any other college football team this year or any other.

Next year Alabama will be a preseason top 3 team again, and probably #1.  Saban doesn't ever rebuild, he just reloads.

It's the same reason why I hate the New England Patriots, because you just get tired of seeing them win.  But from a rational arguments stand point there isn't one team in college football that I start every season saying, "just give them the trophy again." except Alabama.

This isn't the typical Bama team this year. While they have the go-to WR and shifty RB, they don't have the OL or DL to push people around like they're accustomed to. While they usually plug-and-play new 4 & 5 star recruits each year on the defense, sometimes those guys don't pan out as well as you'd like. Plus when you lose coordinators every year, you're bound to take a small step back every now and then. 

I see this as the opposite, this is the year to bet AGAINST Bama. It will be interesting to see what Tua decides because I don't think Saban wants to go back to a pocket passer now that he's tasted the success of a dual-threat QB. Isn't baby Tua pretty good as a QB as well? I don't think this current backup is going to appease Saban next season. 

Honestly, I'd probably bet against Bama in the bowl game because they'll probably play a Michigan team in a non-NYE 6 bowl and I don't know if they'll mentally up for it. 

I don't recall a Bama defense giving up so many points to LSU and Auburn in one season. That alone tells me that they're off. They had their chance to hang with LSU and couldn't pull it off. And if you think they can hang with Ohio St on a neutral site...you might want to check out some Ohio St games. Ohio St looks like Bama teams of the past that light you up on the scoreboard and then demoralize you on defense.

So sad...... Jealousy is not a good look for you! If you want to be associated with “winning”, both LSU and App PROBABLY offer online courses, but I’m NOT sure a Georgia Southern degree would get you in. Worth a try!

You're incorrect about the offensive line. There is plenty of push there. Pro Football Focus and almost all of the OL experts grade it out as the 2nd best OL in the SEC and top 10 in the country. People didn't talk about it as much this year due to all of the skill position talent, especially at WR, and of course Tua. Both tackles, Wills and Leatherwood are likely first rounders. The line definitely wasn't a problem.

As for QB, next year if Tua leaves they have the number 1 QB commit in the country named Bryce Young coming. He's a dual threat pass first guy similar to Tua. I doubt he starts right away, but who knows. Mac Jones is very capable at QB next season while Bryce learns the offense. Saban likes Mac. And who knows if Tua decides to come back. I don't think his mind is made up.

 

You're right about this being the year to bet against Alabama. I did so in this very thread in the preseason. The defense was already thin after a couple of players left early for the draft despite not being ready. Both Mack Wilson and Deionte Thompson needed another season before going to the NFL. Despite them leaving, the defense would've still looked much better had they not lost the best linebacker in the country in the preseason. Dylan Moses alone would've made a huge difference. They also lost 2 other starters to injury.

I don't care how good your recruiting is, when you start 6 freshman and lose your best defensive player to injury in the preseason your defense will suffer. That goes for every single team in the country. The defense will look much better next year if I had to guess. Especially if the draft eligible juniors return.

 

Edit: Defensive line hasn't really been the issue either. They aren't as dominant as last years group (how could they be), but they have been serviceable. The linebackers were basically non existent this season though and a couple of the secondary have blown assignments. Linebacker is easily the biggest issue this season.

Serious note @PMookie, have you seen the App to the Belk Bowl talk?  Apparently the SEC may release their spot and the Belk Bowl would like to get App if they can put them against another local team like VT or similar.  The Sun Belt would have to agree to release one of their 5 spots (Arizona maybe) and it doesn't seem like they are keen on doing that.  However, there is talk of some serious back room deals going on.  I hope it works out for App to play in the Belk as it would be another shot at a P5 for the goat humpers.

I didn't realize we had Friday night football with Oregon vs. Utah in the Pac 12 Championship tonight.  Looks like Oregon is trying to send a message.  Not sure what that message is, but they are giving Utah all they can handle and then some.
