Pretty damn good for my Kansas Jayhawks.  Number 38 in the country.  Les Miles seems to be doing his thing which is upgrading the talent on the roster then not coaching them up.

What stands out bigly is Clemson picking up 6 (yes six) 5 star rated players.  I may have missed it, but I don't think any other school has more than 3.  I'll bet Phil Knight is pissed off 🤣.  Also, look at the weighting of talent headed to SEC and ACC schools... next years CFB will look like this years CFB which looked like the previous years CFB.... and so on and so on.

Who woulda thought, little ole Clemson was able to recruit some good players. Dabo must be so flabbergasted!

Its 100% understandable Clemson's recruiting success when looking at other ACC and east coast schools. They've managed to take advantage of mediocrity from Florida all the way through New Jersey.

And that doesn't mention the fact that they've managed to keep their main recruiters and staff intact. That helps recruiting immensely.

Clemson isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Meh, if recruiting rankings were worth anything, then Texas A&M would have plenty of banners hanging for their top ten classes. As would Texas.

Baylor had a small class...only about 15 because Rhule had to sign a bunch of guys when he came in three years ago. Not as many roster spots open for 2020 class or 2021 class.

Hey @ole gray good luck to your dogs in the NOLA. I wish teams were at full strength. I don't think our starting QB will play (concussion) nor does our second string look good to go. Oh well...first to 17 points wins!

Acquiring them is only half the solution... some would argue less than half.  Some coaches no doubt would rather have some motivated, highly teachable 3 and 4 stars than a bench full of 5 stars.  And there are plenty of examples where that has been a winning combination.  Still, coaching cannot create raw talent.

Yea back at ya.   It's not the same when the majority of your offense is busted up with injuries. You also can't  blame those who are heading for the big paychecks to skip the bowl games. The bowl games outside of the final four are not what they used to be.

I disagree with this thought process. Recruiting rankings, while not an exact science, show a teams overall ability to acquire talent. Sustainable success is largely a mirror of recruiting. Do teams have to develop that talent? Sure, but that doesn't mean you can recruit scrubs and make them superstars. It's just as likely that the player was under recruited as it was that they were developed well.

It's funny you mention Texas A&M. They lost 5 games this past year and all were to teams who have been equal or better recruiters over the last 4 years.

I can't remember that stat exactly, but I'm fairly certain that no team in recent history has won a CFB title being worse than a composite top 10-15 recruiter.

There definitely outliers in this, like the dumpster fire at FSU. Overall though, I believe you'd be hard pressed to find a better indicator of a teams potential success than recruiting.

See, I feel a consistent top 20 class is a safety net for coaches. A coach can get lax one year or have the injury bug bite pretty hard and still manage a top 25 season with consecutive top 10 classes. Not counting the 2020 recruiting rankings, the current Texas team, for example, has recruiting classes of #3, #3, #25, #7. Even with some injuries, they can't win more than 7 games this season. In my book, the coaching has been exposed as being mediocre. Texas A&M currently has recruiting classes of #4, #17, #13, #18. However with those class rankings, they've managed just one year to finish the season ranked since 2013. And Jimbo didn't inherit some empty cupboard at College Station either. Sure they had a tough schedule, but if you look into next season, they're floor should be 10 wins. No Burrows, no Tua, no Auburn DL, and a way easier non-con and the easiest SEC East pairing...you better hope Jimbo turns Mond into Winston 2.0 minus the off the field stuff or he might hear some noise. That noise being laughter. Two other SEC schools that has turned consistent top 20-25 recruiting classes into hot garbage on the field: South Carolina and Tennessee. Holy smokes they pull some talent on signing day and yet...well at least Tenn turned it around the second half of this season.

There are coaches that have recruiting classes in 20s and 30s but field top 20 teams. I equate that to their ability to turn 3 and 4 stars guys into great players who make great plays. As much as I hate the guy, Gary Patterson at TCU can coach up some squads. He manages to keep his classes around 25-35 year after year and despite some inept offenses at time, he has finished with a top 10 ranking three of the last six years. Matt Rhule at Baylor has a top ten team with recruiting classes ranked: #35, #29, #40, #40...and that 2016 class...only 5 players from that class are still on the roster. Over half left/were granted releases from their LOI after the Briles fiasco hit the fan.

The greatest coaching feat so far in my initial research: Iowa. Holy crap...never even cracked the top 40 in the last 5 seasons in recruiting rankings yet, churning out great squad after great squad. Good for them. Honorable mention is Utah and Minnesota. Never cracked the top 30.

All my rankings come from 247.

Of course there are outliers! There are outliers with every stat/ metric, but I still feel that recruiting is the easiest way to predict a teams success.

Texas A&M plays in the SEC west. Should they being winning more than they have every year? Sure, you can argue that but it's not like they are the best recruiter in their own division. They aren't even second best! They are generally the 3rd or 4th best recruiter in their own division year after year. And that's with 3 other teams within a ear shot of them. All SEC West teams are top 30 recruiters. You mention Burrows, Tua and the Auburn D line likely leaving. They won't be replaced with nobodies. They are gonna be replaced with more 4 star caliber players trying to get drafted highly into the NFL.

On to Baylor. I think Rhule is one of the best up and coming coaches in the country. Solid scheme and a decent recruiter. I think he'll do well at Baylor. With that said, he only did slightly better than what he should have with his schedule. He was 3-0 vs similarly recruited teams, with 2 wins vs teams 4 and 6 spots lower ranked and 1 win vs a team 5 spots better. Baylor was 1-2 vs teams that were better recruiters. They beat Texas while losing both games to OU. I believe Baylor's talent profile will continue to rise while Rhule is there and they'll continue to recruit better, which will lead to more success.

If you look purely at the recruiting, Tennessee should have been a 9-3 team this season. Instead they lost 2 games to teams they shouldn't have and finished 7-5. One of those losses was particularly egregious (you love to see it).

Look at the bowls, for example, of teams with more talent winning games. I bet the better recruited teams wins 70+% of their games.

Edit: Some teams do generally overachieve where they recruit. Iowa and Utah, as you mentioned, and also Wisconsin comes to mind.

Watching Air Force run the triple option is a hoot.  They had me fooled most of the game. WSU really struggled containing them and it was mentioned that it was hard for them to emulate in practice.  It works when it works but sure seems high risk.

LSU has peaked at the right time, they will be almost impossible to beat IMO.   It truly looks as if it is LSU, Clemson & tOSU then everybody else.  No other teams are anywhere near as good.  Some of the teams that played LSU fairly close early in the season  may fool themselves into thinking they are close but nope, none are close to what is happening with this team now.

The Penn State and Notre Dame games are good examples of how top recruits in the O and D lines, on perennial top 25 teams, make a difference - especially late into the games.  LSU leaving no doubt they will be playing for the crystal.  Here's hoping the Buckeyes take down Clemson.

Nice season Notre Dame!!
