Help fix my ball flight

Recommended Posts

Just recently  and with my driver only, when the ball lands it spins left (I'm a lefty). My normal ball flight has been a cut and would typically roll out straight. I think my setup, grip  and swing are the same - can't figure out what's going on. Again this is driver only - irons and hybrids are relatively straight.

As you say you have a cut/fade I would expect the ball on landing to go left as that's the spin direction.

If this is something new, then something in your setup, grip, or swing is clearly not the same.  Knowing nothing about your swing (other than being a lefty), my guess would be that you are teeing the ball slightly more forward than usual.  I only say that because I have a similar issue that I call "tee creep".   When I move the tee back an inch, I strike the ball on a straighter path, and actually produce a slight draw.  YMMV

Tony, I sometimes struggle with this too.  Can you post or shoot a video of your swing?

Hmmm that's interesting. I'll have to look at that. So far it's the only thing I haven't looked at. Grip and alignment seem to be the same.

Ok let me try this one again - perhaps I'm not using the correct terminology. My normal ball flight is a cut - the ball launches to the right (again I'm a lefty) and comes back with the end result being a fairly straight shot down the fairway with the ball generally rolling out straight.

The issue I'm having is lately I'm hitting fades and when the ball lands it's tendency is to roll to the left .. Some of this is aggravated by a couple of our fairways sloping left - but it also happens on a level fairway.

Does my explanation make sense?

I would guess that your "cut" ball flight was a right to left flight that still moved left at landing but was not as pronounced as it is now.   Is your ball starting more right and moving more right to left (more curve), or are you starting the ball more toward the center with the same amount of curve as before?

That's correct. minimal turn left at landing

My sense is that it's starting more towards the center then moving left - but it appears to be more pronounced left after landing.

Not asking about after landing, more concerned about actual flight.

If you are starting the ball more towards the center, you have changed you stance to be more closed, leaving the face open a bit more and/or ball position has move back.

Go to the range and use some alignment aids to work on your setup and ball position. One rod down the target line to get setup correct and something to show ball position to make sure it is in the right position.

Changed ball type recently?

Ok Guys - thanks for the tips. Played last night and the drives went straight and the ball rolled reasonably straight. So to your points:

1. I teed the ball slight more to my right heel (I'm a lefty).

2 I broke open a new sleeve of Pro V1Xs (I was using 5A Pro V1X's recently and yes i did see the recent Tony C. youtube on his trip to Titleist and the work he did on cutting up golf balls)

3. i really focused on alignment.

Which of those worked and took care of the issue?  Not sure but i guess it doesn't matter since all three are important. Thanks again guys!.

Staring right then"cutting" back left is a over the top open face path your landing and rolling left sounds to me like the OTT move has been lessened somthe shot has more roll out left because the sidespin energy has not been absorbed in the flight psth IMHO thoughts fellow spies?
