Padraig Harrington Questions Tiger's Schedule

Recommended Posts

Padraig questioned whether Tiger is serious about winning The Open Championship because he isn't playing tournament links golf between the US Open and it.

Think maybe if Tiger was playing this schedule 15 years ago, the questioning would be valid but given his current state of health, I don't think there's any validity to what Harrington is saying.

Curious what others think.

Personal opinion is that this is an article just designed to create controversy.  Everyone always asks about Tiger and his chances to win the tournament so Padraig gave his opinion nothing more and nothing less.   Players have to determine the best way to prepare for tournaments and this is how Tiger has chosen to prepare.  It may not be what he would ideally do, but may be what he is capable of doing.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. There’s lots of guys who don’t play before the Open not sure it means they don’t want to win. Considering tiger knows how to play links golf it’s not really an issue. He’s also won without playing driver.

Funny how people can read the same material and have completely contradictory thoughts as to what was discussed within the material!

I took Padraig as saying his personal preference is to play tournament links golf prior to The Open.  Furthermore, he has always been amazed at how Tiger can just show up and be so competitive in majors without playing tournament golf the week before.  Padraig said he would be a basket-case going into a major if he hadn't been competing in the weeks prior.

Maybe i'm missing something.  To me, this is another instance where other Hall-Of-Fame players consider Tiger to be immortal!  Doesn't have anything to do with Padraig suggesting Tiger isn't serious about winning The Open.

Nah you’re not missing anything, I believe Nicklaus also took off at times before majors for prep. Different players have different regimens for how best to prepare but in this case I think it’s just that Tiger has physical limitations now that he has to work around and it showed at the British.

Sadly, I think this is the Tiger we will see for the rest of his career.  He will need perfect weather conditions to allow him to free up his surgically repaired body in order to be competitive.  But like he did at this years Masters and Jack did in '86, when Tiger puts it all together for one week, it's still magical.
