Golf Can Be So Rude Sometimes

So I was thinking about golf, quite the common occurrence, and had my memory jogged about a funny, yet quite rude moment on the golf course from a few years ago.

I was playing Perth Golf Course just outside Ottawa, Ontario with my old man and a couple randoms who signed up at the same time as us. We were on the 11th hole and I was playing off the penultimate tees and it was a 190ish yard par 3 and quite uphill.

I decide to hit my 3 iron, which at the time was my 200 yard club and figured I could run it up onto the green because it's quite open into the green. That is until I put an absolutely horrendous swing on it and hit it way off the toe. I'm talking where the grooves end off the toe. Luckily I was able to get the face squared up with a fairly neutral path so the ball went dead straight, but ended up about 30 yards short of the green right in line with the flag.

So I pull out my trusty 56° wedge thinking I'll hit a nice low spinner into the green that'll bounce once or twice and check up, pin was maybe 5 paces on the front of the green just on the right hand side. So of course I put way too much mustard on it and I know it the instant I hit the ball. I did everything I wanted to do, got the exact contact I wanted, just hit it way too hard. And this is where it starts to get comical.

The ball never leaves the flag. In fact it lands in the hole, rattles around and comes flying back out of the hole making sure to take a 90° left turn for good measure and I end up on the front left fringe of the green a good 25 or so feet from the pin.

Being off the green, I decided to leave the pin in for my putt. It was a soft left to right putt, maybe 4 cups of break. I saw the line instantly so I got ready to hit the putt. I get it started right on line and it's looking like it's dead-on in the hole. Naturally I gave it a bit too much pace and it hits the flagstick and rebounds out of the hole about six inches from the cup.

At this point I'm almost hysterical, just laughing at how ridiculous this hole has been. I tapped in for my bogey and to date it's probably my most memorable bogey.

What are some of your funny stories of golf being rude?

Haha as you should.

I certainly continued leaving the pin in from off the green at the time. I'm not one to change that based on one hole. I've also had the opposite happen. Hit a putt that's tracking dead centre cup with too much speed, hits the back of the hole and stays out. That's golf for ya lol

Nice story... but I'm still leaving the pin in this year.

Playing in Maui with a large group of friends I struggled through the first few holes. Everything felt out of rhythm. I finally hit a decent drive followed by a respectful second shot setting up a short pitch into the green on the Par 5. The wind was into my face so I knew I needed to get on it a bit. Hurrying the swing I bladed it solid and hot. The ball screamed across the green destined to become one with the ocean. Amazingly it hit squarely on the face of a rock just at the waters edge, bounced straight back towards the course, hit the green, caught the hill and rolled straight toward the cup finally coming to rest within an inch of the hole.

Golf is not only rude she also has an incredible sense of humor ;)
