Good - Grip is on all the way, stays on and doesn't twist

Bad - Isn't fully seated, not aligned the way you wanted, twists after you've played for a bit

Can depend on the model. If using a grip with some sort of alignment feature such as a rib or something else like the GP Align grips then obviously you would want/need those positioned correctly. If you add wraps then you want those in the right place. Or, if the grip tape used is off a narrow roll and then wrapped around the shaft almost perpendicular (as opposed to wide strips that are laid on in the same orientation as the shaft), then that tape needs be applied consistently without significant gapping that could potentially create low and high spots. This scenario would be unlikely unless doing multiple wraps, but it's still possible so.

Grip has to go on straight and if the logo is pointed up, it's got to be lined up with the club face. An open/closed grip can mess with your head a bit on your alignment. Free hand install is fine if you're good at it, but a good bench vise and a steady base can really help on installing clubs.

Grip fully seated

Alignment marks parallel

Grip logo aligned to the leading edge of the club

Interestingly, I'm seeing more & more people turning the logo over so it is not visible. I believe I saw Rahm with his Golf Pride label turned upside down at The Open.

This has been a trend for a while as a lot of players prefer to use the club face to align the club rather than relying on the grip which may or may not move to some degree over time. I started going logo down and using the face more which has helped my game and increased my golf knowledge a good bit as I've come to better understand the relationship between face, path, and ball flight. Now I just play a grip sans any alignment marks and I like it quite well.

Honestly a good grip instal is when you do not think  about the way the club feels in your hands when you step into a shot. Everything else is purely cosmetic. Some people I know prefer ribbed grips to be actually twisted for their weak or strong grip. Alignment grips with visible lines are to help you square the face but once a player actually knows what square looks like these are unneeded as well. A bad instal is when you "feel" the grip ie tape bump, ridge in finger line ,or whatever makes you "think" or uncomfortable over the ball. UNLESS its your putter then everything above about alignment and squaring is a lie

This is exactly why I do my own grips. I want them to be correct for me. That may not be correct for someone else. As a lefty, there isn’t a RH installer that could ever get my grips correct.

I have been installing my own for 4-5 years because I am picky. Haha! Has to be perfectly straight and logo correctly in line with the shaft when I lay the face down. Also on all the way and no twisting.
