Custom made clubs

Okay all, here is the next test I'd love to see from MGS. There is always much made about getting fit and that getting fit for clubs is more important then the clubs you get.

Also, I have fond memories of the custom club builder in my home town. He did (and still does) make completely custom fit clubs. I'm not entirely sure where the club heads come from, I'm sure most here know the type. They don't look flashy, but I play with guys who have them and pure almost every shot.

It's also less expensive to get a full custom set made than getting a off the rack set. I don't mind playing KSigs or Snell balls, should I be getting a set of whatever generic brand these are, but completely custom fit and saving $$ in the process?

Do these clubs perform at a comparable level to major oems and does the custom fit process make them a better option?

Anyone have experience here with this?

... I used to make quite a few different clubs from Toski, Golfworks, Snake Eyes and Wishon to some pretty sketchy components when I first started building clubs. Unless you know your club fitter and he lets you know exactly where he gets his heads, it can be a real crap shoot. As we have all seen with the Find It Cut It, the same holds true for club heads. You don't know what kind of materials are used and what kind of QC they go thru. True for irons but especially true for woods and hybrids that can have anything inside.

... That said, a good club fitter with quality components can fit you into amazing clubs that will fit your swing and your game. I  knew some really good ones back in golf's golden years.

Agree with @chisag re: QC on heads.  We used to build some cheaper house clubs using knockoff heads we'd get from China.  The quality was questionable, at best.  Having said that, there are some quality components out there that reputable builders will use that rival the big name brands.

So with quality components, does going this route offer as good as performance as using the big brand equipment?  Also, I'm only talking irons here. I couldn't bring myself to go with the woods/hybrids without some serious testing.

IMO, yes.  And, I wouldn't hesitate to consider hybrids and woods, even your driver.

... I think you are going to get different answers to this question depending on skill level and how you view quality components. Some feel they compare directly to OEMs and some feel they are inferior. I would not hesitate to play a quality component especially from a reputable fitter that knows their stuff.

... Personally I think the amount of R&D available to the major OEMs will produce a superior product but the question is, by how much and is your game good enough to take advantage of that difference? I think the answer for most is a quality component will rival the performance of an OEM for a lot less money.

I agree with chisag wholeheartedly. I play Wishon irons and wouldn't hesitate to get another set or recommend them. I chose Wishon over other common name brands and a couple of non-oem brands. I didn't necessarily save money by doing that. I became sold on my fitter mostly. Then the brand and head design. My Wishon heads were each hand-selected by Tom Wishon. (a service offered by Tom at the time) I don't know anyone playing irons that aren't advertised in magazines, TV, or the web. Are mine better*? No. Are major OEM clubs worse. Certainly not. The difference is in the fit and build IMO. That's the difference!

So far I have had good luck playing custom made clubs from Gigagolf, and I am also considering Maltby for my next set of irons. At my skill level I think my clubs are just fine. They do a basic static fitting online that got me started. Most likely I will get a true fitting before I buy any more clubs, but I will still probably go the custom/online route.

No. I've been a traditional length player my whole life. I play the 771csi heads. There are a few guys in the forum that do play single length. I think the Wishon's are called Sterling?

Look for forum member Stroker. I think he has a set.
