Wedges for the fluffy stuff?

I grew up playing on bluegrass mix grass fairways, and maybe some fescue. Al tightly mown.

 

I am not getting the top quality strikes with my wedges off of this fluffy fairway stuff. It’s like the ball is tee’d up, and there isn’t a bottom... never ending pit. Weird...

 

Any players who play strictly on Bermuda? What’s your secret? I’m having trouble getting used to it.

I play on Bermuda all the time, it ours is tight, so the “bottom of the pit” is only about 1/2” down. Add to this, it’s usually hardpan, I play wedges with low bounce!

Pretty much, only real success I have had is sweeping everything. The problem is that then the ball sits down and sweeping is not an option. There are many shots where I look down and have hit it about 1 groove from top of club. It's a guessing game. I play lowest bounce possible but not sure that is the best approach.

I have played on Bermuda my whole time of playing and I have a very shallow approach to the ball - my miss is actually thin more than fat by a large margin. As others have said, I tend to have a low bounce lob wedge and a mid bounce gap wedge to give me options. The lies tend to be very fluffy or hardpan it seems so I tend to take small divots. On fluffy lies it's really hard to compress the ball but most of our fairways and areas around the green are tightly mown so it's not as much of an issue there. I tend to hit a lot of knockdown type shots which has helped with contact and direction. A good example: last week I had missed the fairway and had a birds nest type lie you often get in Bermuda. I had 134 into a 15 mph wind (which helped) - I took 8 iron and opened it up quite a bit, put the ball back in my stance and hit a little knockdown, hold off type of shot which worked really well. It's a lot of trying different shots and getting to know the grass.

I play a high bounce wedge in Bermuda rough. The MD4 X grind works well for me.

I don't generally have problems in the fairway;  the rough is a killer.  You can end up with a ball that sits on top or sinks to the bottom.  For those that sink,  you have to hit down and hold on so the head doesn't rotate.  For those on top,  you have to sweep it at the right depth and hit slightly up on the ball.   This is part of why I struggle so much with my shortgame.

The D grind is a more versatile K grind and worth a look. I had the K grind in the lob wedge and it limited the shots I could hit around the green.

The D Grind is great - similar to a M Grind but with more bounce. A really solid choice.
