Putter Strike Location

Recommended Posts

Took this photo after a round a few weeks ago and it got me wondering about whether or not I should try to move my strike a little lower on the putter face. The upper most portion of the face (silver part) is steel and the lower part (black) is aluminum. The current strike pattern is almost exactly center (top-to-bottom) of the total face height and milling marks, but it’s high on the aluminum. Should I be trying to attain a strike that’s centered on the aluminum?

It looks to me like you are striking in the center of the machined pattern, which I would think is the goal, regardless of where it is relative to the insert.

That was my original thought, but I started to wonder if catching it more towards the top edge of the aluminum would produce any negative effects due to increased harshness (it doesn't actually feel harsh though) or some actual performance reason.

I'd assume I'm good where I'm at, but certainly if I were gaming something with an insert akin to the Odyssey White Hot then striking it that close to the border between materials would be detrimental. No?

Agreed if the insert is something pretty soft. Do you know how the aluminum is attached? If it's something solid (screws, rigid epoxy), I don't think it would matter, but if it's a soft adhesive, you may have a point. To me it looks like you are hitting it where it is designed to be hit.

Strike location seems okay. Lots of thinks can influence so how would you fix? Forward shaft lean, ball back in stance, descending blow would tend to be high on face. Opposite would be low on the face. What I have seen is more people seem to hit “high” on the face.

If you are hitting the ball on you like and can control the speed then I wouldn’t change anything. If you decide to try and change make sure that you understand what you are trying to accomplish; which, needs to be more than the strike location looks better.

I just did a tiny bit of research to confirm. It's held together with 4 screws, and also utilizes a "vibration dampening system".

Based on the images, it looks like there is enough aluminum behind the hitting zone for it not to matter. I never really gave it any thought before because until I took that picture, I never realized where my strike location was. I just knew if it felt good or didn't, etc. I was really quite surprised to see just how consistent I am with the flat stick!

I always like to ask the community about things like this. When we buy clubs, no one tells us how they were actually designed to be hit in terms of CG location, etc. for maximum effectiveness. Until MGS started their CG study and discussion, I never would have even considered it.

Excellent points. I honestly don't know what AoA would be, but I'd assume I'm pretty neutral or possibly swinging slightly up as I don't want the ball to skid. I actually putt with a cupped left wrist and don't press at all anymore. I find when I do that I will hit more down on the ball and it creates all sorts of issues for me.

My observation would be that with the contact high on the face, you are actually hitting down on the ball. It seems that if you were to move the ball forward in your stance you would strike up on the ball which would get the ball rolling a bit sooner. You are striking the ball in the center from toe to heel. I would wonder if with your current strike location if you come up short on some putts. The skid and drag produced by the downward strike seems like it would cause the ball to come up short. Those are the things that I think of when I see the strike high on the face.
