Slipping Ferrules....?

Recommended Posts

I noticed after my last round that a gap has formed between the club head and ferrule on several of my irons. Initial 'googling' suggests this might not be anything to really worry about but it does concern me a bit.

Is this something to fret over and/or is it something I can repair myself?

As far as I'm aware, it's purely cosmetic (ferrules just provide a more finished look to the golf club). Whether or not it's indicative of something else though, I couldn't tell you. I've never built clubs before. That said, I'm sure it's easy to fix yourself if you're really bothered by it.

... As long as it is not on a graphite shaft, it is basically cosmetic. Many graphite shaft ferrule have a coned bottom so epoxy cushions the transition were the shaft is stressed. You can fix it yourself with some epoxy, but you will need to sand the steel or it will just happen again.

Since your irons are steel shafted, as @TR1PTIK said, they are mostly for cosmetic purposes. The other reason I can think of would be to keep dirt/debris from getting down into where the hosel and shaft meet.

If they've slipped up too far they might not want to come back down without a little heat. A dab of epoxy and light touch from a heat gun will probably fix you up. Be careful with the heat gun, I got a little overzealous with mine and definitely melted a ferrule on a practice club a few weeks ago.

What irons? There are some irons that use a collared ferrule and are not as easy to fix. Part of the ferrule goes down into the hosel and of the epoxy is inside of that area it’s almost impossible to get it to seat properly and flush. They look like this.

A dab of super glue on the bottom of the ferrule is the easiest way to seat the pesky sliding piece of plastic.

If the ferrule is very loose and has a collar as posted earlier, try turning to get the best fit then glue.

Yes the ferrulle is typically for display but 1) if you know its there you are looking for it each time the stix is pulled from the bag.

2) as also stated there are those that actually provide some support like the collared model.

I have a three week old Epic Speed with an Mitsubishi MMT shaft. The ferrule is not loose, per se, bit has separated from the head by about a quarter inch. I have a 90 day return for credit on the driver. Should I be worried about this on a graphite shaft and thus exchange it for another?

I want to be fair to the retailer but don’t want to have to replace the shaft early. My last Epic cracked right across the face after about 2.5 years.

Thanks for the help.

Probably worth a stop-in with the retailer if they do club repair. I tried a couple of the DIY repair options but didn't get good results trying it myself. If the club is still under warrantee the OEM will probably take care of the repair for you, or even better, send you a new one.

I would take a sharpie and mark the shaft where the ferrule meets the shaft. Make sure the ferrule is moving up and the head is not moving down. My wife had a driver that the gap kept on increasing. Told her not to worry it was cosmetic. Next week on the 2nd hole the head flew down the fairway.

Lesson learned. Air was trapped and when the club got hot in her car trunk the glue softenen enough and the air bubble expanded to push the head off little by little. I also told her not to keep her clubs in the trunk.

Nothing to worry about, I've had it happen on irons before. Take a pair of vice grips or pliers and work it back in place. Shouldn't have to squeeze so tight you'll damage the shaft.

The first thing to do is make sure the head is not coming off the shaft.  Take the head and put it between your feet.  Grip the butt of the shaft and twist.  Give it a good go.  If it's loose you will know immediately.

Funny, I never had this problem with my PE2's 🙂.  I recently noticed my G410 7i ferrule had slipped a little.  I purchased one of those bench vise insert, rubber shaft grips, and used a small piece of wood with a small hammer to tap it back flush. If it slips again, I might use a little epoxy.

I have this problem on my Epic Flash driver. The ferrule separated. I think it moved up the hosel. I removed the head and inspected. I can't get the ferrule back down and my head is now moving slightly when I twist. How do I fix this? I've tightened the head screw as much as I can for fear of stripping the screw. I appreciate any suggestions.

Ferrules are tight and not easily slid down the shaft.   IMO, head moving slightly implies that the epoxy has failed.  Twisting is not a good ideas as it may damage the shaft.  Tightening the head screw won’t help as the adapter connection to the shaft is where your problem lies.   Also, you should only use the clubs torque wrench to tighten the screw as it will prevent overtightening.  A potential way to diagnose this yourself it to measure the shaft length to see if the adapter has slipped down the shaft.  Unfortunately, I don’t know the stock driver shaft length for that driver but some google searches should get you going.  You could also take the club to a club repair place and they can help determine if the epoxy is the issue.

Isn't a lot of ferrule slippage caused by heat, i.e., storing clubs in your trunk or garage during hot summers? I used to see this when I stored my clubs in the garage in Georgia summers, since I started storing my clubs in the house have not seen it again.

It is one reason. Multiple reasons on why it could happen.  Ferrule slipping really isn’t a huge issue,  but if it is the adapter or club head coming loose because of an epoxy breakdown that is a big issue.

I had the same thing happen with my Callaway Mavrik Driver.   The ferrule had slipped down.   Knowing that Callaway has 2 year warranty, I took it to the place of purchase.  They fixed it for me while I wait.  It took 5 minutes.   I asked them what they did and they told me they put it in a vice, put a little epoxy and pushed it up.  Easy free fix for me.
