I wanted to update a few things I realize I left out of the stage 1 ( I will edit it to reflect this as well):

Typical Driver SS: 100-105

Iron/shaft specs:

  • KBS Stiff shafts
  • 1* upright
  • +.25"

Some initial thoughts after showing these to people at my club, including the pro:

  • The first thing my club pro mentioned was "wow these are the most upright irons I've ever seen!" I need to get the lie checked out, to see how close they are to the 1* upright I ordered.
  • Most people I show them to really like how they look! Like really like them a LOT. I'm getting more compliments on clubs than I ever have before. Which is weird to me because:
  • Other than the black finish, and the nice shape - I think these clubs look cheap and pretty ugly. I am not a fan of the bedazzled silver inlay, and the lime green "eye" looking thing. (I don't care if I think a club is ugly, if I play well with them, I'm just fine with anything!).

I shot my best two rounds with these last week, an 81 followed by an 80 - so there may be something to these things!

The individual heads were shrink-wrapped in plastic so there didn't really appear to be any issues with shipping wear.

Shrink wrapped plastic?

Recently as last week, Lynx Golf was still claiming to be “the first global golf brand to remove single use plastics”.

I noticed the Prowler VTs @blackngold_blood received also arrived shrink wrapped.

I just tried to check the company website for any updates on their supply chain packaging policy but unsurprisingly it wouldn’t load.

Anyway, I realize this is a Lynx equipment review thread so I’ll try to stay on topic. I noticed your set was shipped with uninstalled grips - what’s the story there?

The heads definitely came with a wrap on them. However the grips did not. I have never bought a new set of irons but the wrapping was the exact same as what came on a new driver I ordered last year.

Interesting to be sure. I had never heard the Lynx Global statement about single use plastic before.

So I've gotten a couple questions about why my grips were sent uninstalled. That was all per my request. I started out by actually requesting my very specific grip install instructions. Rob (Golfspy_CG2) being the outstanding moderator and good guy that he is quickly reminded me that my crazy was starting to show (my wife does this often) so I just requested them to be sent separate and I had my guy at PGATSS set them up for me at no charge.

My request goes something like this: 1 full base wrap. 1 wrap 2/3 up from the bottom. 1 wrap 1/3 up. 1 final full wrap over the top.

LYNX BLACK CAT IRONS Stage 1

Hello, my name is David.  I live with my wife and daughter in Houston, TX. I am a veterinarian and accustomed to working with cats, so it is an honor to have been chosen as a tester of the Lynx Black Cat Irons.

Growing up in Oklahoma, my Dad gave me a set of Walter Hagen Blades, persimmon woods, and a Gary Player Black Knight Putter.  In junior high, I started playing with neighborhood friends. We had no idea what we were doing, but we had fun.  (Our favorite part of a round of golf was a root beer float at the turn.)  During college, I worked summers on a golf course so I could play.  Starting out as a veterinarian, it was difficult for me to find time to play golf.  For the last 10 years, I have not had to work as much which has allowed me to play weekly games of golf.  I have become more passionate about the game.  Last summer, our family was fortunate enough to visit the Monterey Peninsula.  I played both Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  (I was in heaven but did not have enough money to stay!)

IMG_1315.thumb.JPG.e64ac9df116a83f5b4227e597d7d7707.JPG

Currently my handicap is 15, but my Arccos Caddie after playing 16 rounds list my handicap as 13.  I had a swing evaluation last winter at GolfTech.  Watching the video allowed me to understand the improper mechanics in my swing as well as many proper mechanics.  I have been working very hard to correct the improper mechanics.  My ball flight has always been a fade to a slice.  Implementing the teachings of Danny Maude and Clay Ballard (TopSpeedGolf) my ball flight currently is much straighter.  Occasionally, I hit a slight draw, but my main miss is generally to the right.  My tempo is smooth with a more effortless swing.  I typically hit a 7 iron 150 yds.

The first set of irons that I was fitted for was a set of Ping i3 Blades with Cushin Z Z65 shaft plus 0.5” and a 1* upright.  My current clubs are Titleist 716 AP1 with KuroKage stiff graphite shafts plus 0.5” and a 1* upright.

The specs I gave for my order of the Lynx Black Cat Irons were plus 0.5” and 1* upright, but I intentionally went with a regular graphite shaft to keep the weight of the overall club as light as possible.  One of the things that I learned from my experience of winning the D7 Wilson Driver in the SpyStaffSlam 2019 Masters was that this shaft and driver combination was lighter than my current driver (so I have changed to a lighter shaft on my TS2 Driver).  Lighter is more beneficial with a slow tempo swing that I am trying to encourage.  I ordered oversized grips because I have large hands.

The Black Cat irons ($650 in steel, $720 in graphite) are a hollow design that use a variable thickness face to improve ball speed consistency from on-center to off-center hits. Each head is filled with a polymer to support a thin face of just 2.0 millimeters. The standard set is six clubs, 5-iron through pitching wedge.

In order to compare the new clubs to my current player improvement clubs, I plan on using the new clubs every time I play/practice until the evaluation is over.  I will be evaluating their forgiveness, length, and accuracy to see if they get to stay in my bag.

Through Arccos Caddie tracking and tour analytics, I will see if my play/statics with my irons are improving with the new clubs.

As a former AP1 player.  I look forward to your thoughts on the Black Cats.

Nice experience at Pebble.  I'm not envious in the least. 😎

These cats get a little testy when not fed at exactly 4pm.  I teed off at 4:20, and had a ton of trouble today.  A few good shots peppered in but mostly shanked toed bladed fat shots 🤣🤣🤣 No fault of the clubs.

I did make a par 5 in 2... then 3 putted 😞 🤣🤣

Great start everyone!!  This should really be good to see if Lynx is really back.

I know 1 or 2 of you mentioned it in your Stage 1's, but what are you specifically looking for in these irons?  Is what you're looking for something you love about your current set, or something you would love to change?

I am looking for more forgiveness on miss-hits, and hopefully more distance (or no loss of distance).

Great start everyone!!  This should really be good to see if Lynx is really back.

I know 1 or 2 of you mentioned it in your Stage 1's, but what are you specifically looking for in these irons?  Is what you're looking for something you love about your current set, or something you would love to change?

I'm just looking to get better at a very hard game I love. I try to improve my swing and mental approach constantly and if there is any technology out there that can help my be a better golfer and I can afford it...I want it😜

When I played Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill last summer I took the opportunity to play 2018 full set of Taylor Made M4's with my specs and a Spyder putter all supplied by ClubHub shipped to Spanish Bay Resort for two days rental for only $89.00. I was wanting to try those clubs for a while to see if I liked them more than my Titleist. So I tested the M4 and really concluded it was a draw as far as clubs were concerned except for the putter, I much prefer my Scotty to the Spider.

So I'm really just putting the Lynx Black Cats in my bag and if my game benefits from them ...they will stay there🏌️‍♂️

For me I looking for consistency with distance control. My Adams XTD A Tour irons are great irons but I do get the occasional where did that come from shot. I normally hit my PW roughly 120-130 and have had the occasional 150+ out of it. Missing 30+ yards long isn’t a good thing where I play.
I mentioned this in our PM’s but for some reason completely whiffed on putting it in the stage 1.

I'm looking to see if these will hit consistent distance, have a good dispersion, be able to flight high/low/L/R and feel good.  The basic stuff 😉

I'm curious to see if, with such high lofts, if these can hang with GI or PD irons distance wise, and if so, I'd be curious to know how the spin rates compare and if the spin rates are also consistent.

I'm glad you ask.  What I am looking for in Irons, and specifically these? More forgiveness on miss hits.  currently if I have an open face it will bend at a 90 degree angle and hit what ever is to my right.   Closed face and I have a noodle that will strike anything to my left.  Yes, we all strive for the sweet spot on every hit, as do I.  Realistically though that's not a certainty.

PLEASE NOTE!

I'm passing on a message from Stephanie Zinser...Owner of Lynx Golf.

Hello testers,

First off, we wanted to thank each of you for the interest in Lynx Golf. We are longtime fans of MyGolfSpy.com and look forward to hearing more about your experience.

We read with some dismay that the majority, if not all testers, received clubs in a damaged box, which is totally unacceptable and of great embarrassment to us. We have never had any club turn up in beaten-up boxes in the UK and Europe in over 8 years of business.

It is true that some of our packaging will be different from any other golf brand, because in August 2018 we went single use plastic free as we felt it was irresponsible to do anything else for the sake of our planet.

The U.S. market is new to us and we will be immediately looking at the courier used with these shipments, as well as having an extra outer box for single sets like this to prevent further damage in future.

This is something we will remedy immediately and have taken up with our PR company who shipped these items.

Finally we noted one or two comments regarding our website; this is because we are about to launch a new website in conjunction with our entry into the USA. Stay tuned and thank you again!

Kind regards
Stephanie Zinser
Owner, Lynx Golf

Nice of them to comment and it is a great sign of their level of engagement as well as commitment to building the brand. I also think that the comments that that were provided in the initial reviews added some value as they don’t generally see the end product as delivered. Hoping to be able to watch this brand grow in the near future.

Well this really hits home how important our jobs as testers in this instance is to a company launching their product back into the U.S. market. Also gives credence to how important MGS is in this industry.
