Bag looks different with only 7 clubs in it! This is gonna be fun and probably frustrating at the same time!

The short game is the toughest adjustment with that but you'll learn to love playing extra roll.

If I can shoot under 50 I will be happy. I haven’t exactly had a good relationship with the 4 and 5 irons yet.

Spent some time hitting my 6 and 7 irons. Getting closer to the sweet spot. Good thing I know the home owner. He shouldn't be too worked up with the yard. IMG_20190803_134750593.jpegIMG_20190803_135640107.jpeg

Well folks #IronsOnlyClub wasn’t terrible. I managed a 45/44 with 36 putts. I basically 2 putted every hole with the backside of my 4-iron. In hindsight I should have kept the putter in the bag. I also stuck with my 4-iron off the tee even though I’m not all that consistent with it. I am missing a good 190-210 club and I really want this to be it. It is a work in progress but I will say this, when I put a good swing on it the club absolutely performs.

So far I am still adjusting to the shafts. I tend to pull everything right if I don’t slow myself down a little.
I have to say though when hit on the screws, these prowlers feel unlike anything I have hit before and not in a bad way.

I’m hoping to play again tomorrow and I am toying with the thought of adding the 5 wood and putter to the bag. I am not one for normally playing to certain distances. I prefer to bomb and gouge but am curious what my score would do if I had more 7,8(my favorite club) irons in my hands instead of 9/PW.

If there is anything specific anybody wants tested please let us know. I did test the back of the 4 iron putting left handed today and there is a whole lot of spring off the back!

Oh man that's rough. I really don't know why OEMs are still using PVD when DBM and DLC are pretty easily available. It hurts my eyes and my heart to look at.

Anybody with the gun metal finish on the VTs notice any distinct wear yet?

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

Here is the PW of my gunmetals. Wear hasn't been a problem for me except for the white lines disappearing. I haven't hit quite as many shots as knights has though. MVIMG_20190803_163217883.jpegIMG_20190803_163308847.jpeg

I actually did irons only about a month ago and loved it!  You went more intense than I did though.  I keep everything from my 5i down.  I just took all the woods out.  This is definitely a good way to see how the irons truly perform and I love it!

I played again this morning and shot a 43/44 with another 34 putts. I played today with everything back in the bag but driver and putter. I played a couple irons off the tee as well as a couple hybrids but otherwise stuck to the 5w. Mainly because I wasn’t swinging overly well and 220 in the trees is better than 150 in the trees!

Overall this weekend my scores didn’t change a lot no matter what was in the bag. Most of that is because of how bad my swing was this weekend. It just felt forced.

I’m hoping to get to the range this week after work to see if I can find my swing again.

On a side note, i did manage to hit a gps measured 305 yard 5 wood today. The 5-10 (guestimate) mph wind was right to left and slightly helping.

I played my first full round with the Prowler VTs today as the primary irons in my bag (I have played a bunch of practice rounds with them in the bag against my gamers).  These irons are just flat out long to give one comment.  I had 251 yards into our par 5 4th and hit a four iron to the front fringe, granted there is a little runway to run it on but never could carry my TMB 4 iron down there to even get to the runway.  On 18 I had 167 yards into a slight breeze and hit 9 iron over the green into the back fringe.  Not sure yet if this is a good thing or a bad thing for my game as distance is generally not an issue for me.  Overall they were solid and I played just a tad bit better yesterday with today's 68.

Played my fourth round with The Black Cats last week. I can tell you I am in love with this 8 iron. Have not hit a bad shot with the 8 yet!

So continue looking at the approach numbers on :Arccos: (18 rounds total)

16 rounds with my AP1 816 irons 4 lowest approach handicap rounds were 17.0, 16.0, 15.6, 15.5

4 rounds with  The Black Cats  in order of play 16.2, 16.1, 14.7, 13.1   which as you can see includes the two lowest rounds while tracking with :Arccos:

Finally played my first long round with the VTs yesterday. 6900 yds. Shot 84 but I won't completely blame or give credit to the clubs.

Driver was hot and so we're the wedges. Putter was on target but left probably 6 5-10' putts 1-2" short which is was a killer. The course was in less than decent condition with some furry greens that were about 50% under repair. Pretty annoying.

Am considering a 2nd opinion on the adjustments as I was firing a stronger fade than I like to see. Thinking I might need another half degree upright. Having some trouble releasing and squaring the club which doesn't help.

Question for the VT crew: you notice how the face naturally falls open at address when not gripping/holding the club? I haven't noticed this with other clubs and my Maltbys sit square on their own. Probably nothing but something worth asking around about. Wonder if they're a tad back side toe-heavy?

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

I shot a 45 yesterday that included 2 double pars 8 and 6 😞

had I not ruined those holes it could very well have been my first sub 40 for 9.  Oh well, next time! 🙂

Sorry for the delay in a LOT of thoughts I have on the Black Cats - I just started a new job, and have been incredibly busy the past week.

I played a bunch of rounds (around 😎 during my time between jobs, here are my thoughts and some pictures to support some good/bad things.

1. Distance

The Lynx Black Cat's have a more "traditional" loft setup, very similar to my old Adams Idea Black irons. When I switched to the Cobra Irons from the Adams, I was expecting a giant distance gain - That turned out not to be the case. (I will use my 7 iron distances for these examples). Here are the lofts:

637520149_AdamsLofts.jpg.81b9ff9cf8ece5d028b505576019b2f9.jpg

^Adams Idea Pro Black CB1 Forged Irons Lofts

^Cobra King F8 Irons Lofts

1311244444_lynxlofts.thumb.jpg.a801ab13747bae197d2d379c1ccc00c3.jpg

^Lynx Black Cat Iron Lofts

Adams Irons: Average 140-145 yards (only on very well struck balls would I reach 145)

Cobra F8: Average 145-155 yards (very small increase, and only very well struck balls would reach 155 - and trended toward 150 more frequently after lessons)

Black Cat: Average 145 (really doesn't matter how good or bad I strike them, they go right about 145 in almost any situation)

As I have taken some lessons toward the end of 2018, I noticed my distance gaining a little bit. I directly tie this to the golf lessons. I have had two lessons with the Black Cat irons as well, so any technique/swing improvements will have been translated to this as well.

My conclusion a few weeks in is that the cobra F8's have a few more yards to squeeze out of them, while the Black Cat's are incredibly consistent (and do fly straighter). I will continue to play around with all three of these irons, and update from a range session using only these irons.

2. Spin

After the aforementioned golf lessons, my ball striking improved. After taking some of them, I began to hit my irons with backspin - something I had only seen on TV or YouTube. After comparing the groove depths of the Cobra irons and the Black Cat's - I was concerned I'd lose this cool party trick.

After my first 8-ish rounds with the Black Cats - almost all irons seem to drop and stop within a 2 foot radius of my divot (left/right/forward/back depending on if I had a slight draw/fade or slope of the green):

I have WAY more of these types of pictures - but figure this does about show it. All of these shots were hit with a club between the Black Cat PW-7 Iron. This is a positive if you look at it right. Combining this with the very consistent distance of the Black Cat Irons, you will pretty much know exactly where the shot will land and end at the end of almost any iron shot. The only time I experienced major backspin is on a green greatly sloped against the tee box on Par 3 Hole 17 at Meadowbrook CC in Richmond:

70110680_Spin4.thumb.jpg.f1697141a893a595b39cf8ffcb175820.jpg

So if you know what the greens are like, club up!

Overall, I am enjoying the predictability of these clubs, but the potential loss of distance could be a killer (since I don't hit the ball far anyway)

I'll continue to update, and would love to answer any questions anyone has!

Note: in these spin pictures, I am using the Srixon Z Star XV in each shot (bought a bunch of them at Dick's during their BoGo)

Black Cat Testers - would you want to order any additional set wedges, GW and/or SW with these irons?

VT Testers - do you feel that these irons need a set GW to be offered, or would you rather stick to "typical" wedges like Vokey/Cleveland/Ping?

When I had the lofts and lies checked my PW came in at 44* so everything fit gap wise for me with my 48* normal wedge already in the bag. I had a set GW in my A Tours but honestly almost always pulled the 48* out instead. It was just easier to hit partial shots with. I could only take a full swing with the set GW.

With the VT's at least, I feel like it was the right move not to include a GW. The PW with it's larger face surface area has probably the least pleasing acoustics of all of the clubs in the set. Which I still find strange as the rest sound great. IMO, profile wise, the PW is close to appearing out of place with the rest of the set but still blends in ok.. A Gap would only likely sound as bad or worse and would probably require a bigger profile than is preferred.

I wouldn't see the type of player interested in this club looking for this type of a GW so it might not be a heavy request.

Initial thought, yes. Now that I've played a few more rounds with them, I'm more inclined to say no. I think they should offer irons 3-9. If they want to start a line of wedges, that could be interesting.

The set gap wedge from my old cavity back Mizunos was a perfectly useable club, but it looked like a frying pan at the end of the shaft.  It was fugly.

Cobra didn't have a bad idea with the wedges in the F8 set, but for the target audience, the Cleveland CBX is probably the best design.  It may seem like it's the size of a tennis racket, but it's shaped so nicely and it's so easy to hit that you learn to love it quickly.  Makes me think I should put it back in the bag...

Yeah I love my Maltby DBM set Gap. It fits right into the set, looks good, and doesn't give any reasons to look for an alternative. That said, the Maltby DBMs are very basic in design and tech and are single piece forged so not much to have to re-engineer to make it work. If that makes sense.

I asked for a gap wedge to go along with the set because the lofts matched up almost perfectly. And I still wish it came with one!

After today’s round I noticed something that has me thinking that the tour 90 shafts aren’t for me. I hit an extra ball or 2 every now and again to try to judge consistency. I already hit the ball high but with the wind today added in, I was easily 3 clubs short of normal. I suspect it is the extra height and spin.

It is kinda like a catch 22 though as I really enjoy the extra spin when the wind is down. I mean what’s not to enjoy knowing a well struck shot will end up within a couple feet of where it lands. Even the 6 iron stops on a dime.

azstu324 mentioned some acoustic differences but for me all the irons have the same feel and sound when struck properly. I did however notice today that every iron did flop open when grounded.

So here are a few videos

This first one is to demonstrate the acoustics. The camera didn't quite pick up the PW and 9i like I'd hoped but you can still see a subtle difference. Toe strikes tend to amplify the sound.

PW Video.

9i video

7i shapes. Draw, Fade, and Low. Please excuse the awkward hand signals.

3i Stinger

This one is the bonus video. The 3 and 4 are just low blistering rockets. So fun to hit!
