AIG Women's British Open

This week the LPGA travels to England for the playing of the AIG Women's British Open. Georgia Hall (pictured below) will be trying to defend the title she won last year by two strokes over runner-up Pornanong Phatlum.

This is the least British open of British opens. The course is pretty, but it is parkland not links. Hard to watch an open on it. Just not what my eyes want to see for this championship.

I watched for a while yesterday, and the greens must be really slow.  I've never seen so many world-class players leave so many putts short.  Not very "major-like".

Funny you mention that.  I was watching the end of yesterday's round and something seemed out of sorts, but I could not put a finger on it... it's the terrain.

Watched a video with Peter Finch and Charley Hull. He was talking about the course...

Does seem odd that it’s a tree lined course with the words British Open being played on it.

In the promotion for the event they were talking about the women having the ability to move around to not only different venues but different types of venues including parkland and links. I found even the promotion of it odd but I wasn't sure it that was due to my expectations, biases, whatever or if it was actually odd. It basically sounded to me that since that don't have an event with much history etc they could do what they wanted.

I watched both most of Saturday, and then all of Sunday’s round. This is how a Major should be. Maybe the score was a bit high, but what incredible drama the last 9 holes, and what incredible play down the stretch in this tournament. Salas, Pressel, #1 in the world in Ko. Then Smiling Cinderella Shibuno started a it shaky, then what spectacular play the last 7 holes capped off by an improbable birdie on 18 to win over Salas. This is how golf should be. I think the combined score of the top 5 finishers was something’s like -15 on the back nine on Sunday. Excellent golf ladies. So fun to watch.

I think we have all gotten used to seeing the Men always playing links courses during the open. He parkland style course was different for sure, not what was expected for the British open, sort of negates the wind and weather that seems to always affect the men’s Open.  Make no mistake though, the golf played today was excellent. No matter what course

Definitely one of the best finishes to a major (or any tournament) this year. Lots of great golf played down the stretch. 

The course looked great, just was missing the ocean, some dunes, in escapeable bunkers and wind. 

 

What a great story for the winner.
