I changed from Titleist to TM M6 hybrids this year, and I love them. I think golf equipment is way too subjective to state what's best for everyone.

Hit enough clubs/shafts and look at the numbers you will see that it is less subjective and more objective. People fit into categories and you can map out what will work best for a particular player. This is how fittings work; whether it is looking at numbers on a launch monitor and changing things based on personal experience/knowledge or using tools like the mizuno shaft optimizer. You will also find that people respond differently to the looks of a club and the looks will influence your swing.

I agree 100% with this, I meant subjective as in feel similar to taste of food. There are too many variants, and opinions with subjectivity. What one may like in feel or in taste another would not.

  • 3 weeks later...

I’m curious why the GAPR never appear in any reviews for most wanted. Do they just not fit in a category, or is the opinion just that they’re awful clubs? I’m not the biggest hybrid fan, as I miss left with them a lot. I need something for the long end of the bag that is solid out of the rough.

TaylorMade, along with Callaway, Scotty Cameron and Ben Hogan, declined to participate in Most Wanted testing so MGS had to purchase clubs from each category to test.

They chose to test the M6 as its the only new hybrid in TM's lineup. The GAPR Hi could be considered a hybrid but it's more of a hybrid/utility iron combo than a true hybrid. The Mid and Lo are pretty well straight up utility irons comparable to Titleist's U500 and U510.

I think TM kind of missed the mark with the GAPR line. They're not a big seller, I don't think, and apart from being in some bags at the 2018 Open Championship, there's not been much tour use. Most guys have stuck with the P790 UDI in that region of the bag.

I would suggest testing some hybrids that have flat settings on the adjustable hosel. Ping G410 would be a good one to give a try.

GAPR clubs are considered utility irons and are part of that most wanted testing group. Testing should be wrapping up, I finished a week or so with utility resting, so results should be a few weeks out.

Nice! Can’t wait to see how this one goes.

For me: I hate utility irons. I am really inconsistent with them and struggle to get enough spin. Would need to really work on technique to put one in the bag. In my opinion, utility irons are for players with mid to high swing speeds.

I’ve hit the g410, it feels amazing but misses left a lot. I have a very fast swing speed.

Looking forward to seeing the results. I just miss hybrids left too often, and need a better option out of the rough on par 5s. Besides, you know, the fairway. Wouldn’t that be nice...

Fast swing speed doesn't have much to do with it going left. Something else is causing that. A lot of hybrids are more upright which tends to make them go left for a lot of players. It's why I suggested the G410 as it's one of the few hybrids out there that has the ability to flatten the lie angle through the adjustable hosel which should mitigate the left shot, if dynamic lie is the root cause of those left shots.

Interesting. A lot of the research I’ve done has hybrids tending to miss left with higher swing speeds. I’ve messed with loft and lie, still left with incredible consistency. I have to try and slice the ball to hit it straight. Never have that problem with woods or irons. Which drives me insane because the ball feels fantastic coming off the face of the g410s.

Not sure the cause then. You'd have to analyze your club data to really understand what's causing it with your swing. Have you been testing on a launch monitor?

Yeah, the only cause could be my angle of attack tends to be slightly steep. Not sure if that would make a huge difference.

The ball going left could be caused by you striking the ball with a face closed to the path, the dynamic lie angle being too toe up, or hitting the ball on the toe side causing gear effect. It could also be a combination of all three.

In my case with fairway woods and hybrids slight toe strikes that would lose distance and wouldn't gear that much off an iron lose almost no distance and gear a ton. Combine that with my tendency to close the face, and I can get some dramatic left misses.

It's not the clubs fault though, it's me. I just have to swing those clubs slightly different than I do an iron.
