2019 Official Forum Member Review-Tommy Armour Atomic Irons

Recommended Posts

In the planning stages of the review, I considered playing a round with nothing but irons in the bag. I was actually starting to get hesitant after a few times hitting the Atomics, until I read about@blackngold_blood doing it during the Lynx review. He didn't even take his wedges or putter! I wasn't that brave and my bag did look a little different without my driver or 3 wood.

I went out with the mentality I was going to expect bogey on every hole, and I came close. I ended up shooting 50 and was really pleased with my round.

I'm still struggling finding an alternative for driver, the 4 iron and I are not getting along too well. I keep wanting to hit it toward the heel and didn't really have any spectacular drives with it. The 5 iron is a better option, I hit my best drive of the round with it (188) after putting one in the water. I am pulling it a bit, so I'm going to have to hit the range to try to straighten both of them out.

My favorite shot of the day was a 6 iron approach on hole 3 that I just absolutely flushed.

I still feel I can squeak a little more distance out of it, but I'm truly happy with it.

I might do this again later on in the review, I definitely felt less pressure to perform since I set more realistic expectations for this round.

I'm about to head out and play nine with nothing but the Atomics, my wedges, and a putter. I'm actually a little nervous about the results, as the driver is my security blanket. It should be fun, though, and I'll let y'all know how it goes.

I only game the 6 - GW as I use hybrids from 3 - 5 positions however those upper clubs really shine for me.

It's looking like I might have to do the same if I can't get a handle on the 4 & 5 irons. Right now I'm leaning toward taking the 4 out of the bag in a few weeks, but the 5 is still up in the air. It's showing signs of life, just gotta get the accuracy up on it.

I know you've been gaming the Atomic Max and love them, how much distance gain have you seen?

A full club over the Cobra light irons I tried (briefly) and a half club over the Cally Steelheads. I use to hit my Steelhead 7 iron 145 and the Max is 150 ish.   The Max irons feel quite sexy when you center pound them!  😍

In hindsight taking the putter out wasn’t the smartest move in the world but it was fun/interesting putting left handed with the back of the 4 iron!

I definitely agree with you on that, these irons feel great when you get then in the sweet spot. There is a nice click, and you can just feel the ball springing off the face. I really didn't expect the feedback from these, but you can tell a difference between a good and bad shot.

I definitely give you props for using the 4 as your putter, I definitely could not have done that. I thought it as a great read and you all are killing it over in the Lynx thread.

I meant to post this on my stage 1, I did an unboxing video for the Tommy Armour irons. It's my first attempt to do one of these vids, so it's not the greatest. I thought it would be nice for all of you to see how well these clubs were packaged.

my stage 1 is up
Great job on the stage 1! The Atomics look good in the bag and I love that Cobra headcover. Takes me back to my childhood watching G.I. Joe.

Oh yeah! And of course that’s a Cobra Hybrid under there too!

I am noticing a tendency for a draw with these irons more than with my Cobra's. They can produce a nice, straight flight, but I'm seeing some right to left movement on occasion. The 60 gram tungsten weight in the toe definitely helps close the face.

I went to the range tonight after work and can't say I had my best ball striking round. Lots of chunks and tops. Lots. The balls I did hit pure were a delight. Nice high ball flight and good distance, for range balls.

I'm planning on playing again on Friday, of the HVAC guy shows up on time. If not, I'll definitely be out on the course this weekend to gather some more data.

After a horrendous range session on Wednesday where I think I forgot how to hit a golf ball, I got out and played today. Shot a personal best 47/41 for an total of 88! Since gaming the Atomics I've had two rounds below 90, and a few over 100.

I caught fire on the back nine, highlighted by a drive on the 250 yard par 4 that hit the green. As for the irons, the Atomics are starting to come along nicely. I hit a 122 yard 9 iron into the 8th, a 142 yard 8 iron into the 3rd, and a 104 yard PW that was just left on the 9th. I'm still struggling with the 4 and 5 irons and might eventually have to look to replace those with hybrids.

I thought I would look again at the numbers through seven rounds and compare with my Cobras.

Cobra

Tommy Armour

Screenshot_20190816-183500.jpeg.8ee1e876d921cb3163c9e55dae6cbc98.jpeg

I'm still seeing similar results with the long irons and wedges, but the 7, 8, and 9 irons are 13, 5, and 37 yards longer at the same point with the Cobra's.

Overall, through every round I've tracked with Arccos here's the difference I've seen in distances. Screenshot_20190816-203133-01.jpeg.1e392f4a12b7fb7701a09a48eb5e6e2e.jpeg

I also looked at the handicap differences through 7 rounds and am playing to a 2.1 stroke difference between the Atomics and Cobra's. Plus my approach handicap is 2 strokes better. 20190816_193504.jpeg.dcd7425847a55b996770979c419c50b3.jpeg20190816_193548.jpeg.353fc91c43bf94492583e18b34aabe1f.jpeg

I know some players worry about the jacked lofts and how they will stop on the greens. I had two shots today, from a distance that hit the green and performed well.

The first is the 143 yard 8 iron into the 3rd.

The second is a 7 iron from 150.20190816_171650-01.jpeg.d191a398d90e8729f4856ff527bf005d.jpeg

As far as I know, we are. You would be more than welcome to come on here and give us your review on the Max irons, as I'm sure some people would love to hear about them.

I'd be interested in that too, as it appears only the Max comes with graphite shafts. That's a must-have for my next set.

Hello all! Thought I would chime in on this putter since I've owned it for a few months now.

I had been using a Ping Ketch mallet putter since the beginning of the year. (I am relearning the game left handed this year due to a back issue and decided to do so with the putter as well) I had been putting fairly well with it but found it a bit hard to line up and I didn't love it, like all putters I have owned. I saw the testing and reviews on this putter and decided to buy it online sight unseen.

I tend to like a longer putter and got it in the 35” model.

(Aside: A member of the forum let me know that it could be bought here in Canada on golfworks.ca as we don't have Dick's here, so thank you whoever you were. It was $130 Canadian. It arrived super well packed, maybe better than any other golf club I've ever gotten in the mail. There were two small scratches on the putter shaft. I decided to email golfworks and see what they had to say about it. The service was incredible and the best I've ever had online. They got back to me within an hour with an apology and said they would ship out a new one that day and they had a shipping label for me to return mine with. For me the scratch's weren't a big deal and I offered them to refund me $15-20 and I'd keep it. They did me even better and gave me their cost on it and refunded the difference! Unreal service. I will buy all my grips etc. from them going forward.)

      Ok, back to the review!

The putter fit my eye immediately. I have only ever had one other golf club where I just knew I was going to hit it well and that I'd love it at first sight. It was a Cobra knockoff driver I won in the 90's in a closest to the pin contest. This putter was the same way. I just knew I was going to love it and play well with it. I have played ten rounds so far and only six three putts. My first round with it I swooped and won three skins with a twenty foot putt and did it again later in the round with a thirty five foot putt for three more skins (The guys weren't mocking me anymore for having a Tommy Armour putter after that haha)! I do not normally sink many long putts. My longest previous this year wouldn't have been any longer than fifteen feet.

It is really well balanced, the pistol grip is actually very comfortable (I may replace it with something different down the road, we'll see) and I think it looks good. The head cover I can't say the same for, it's pretty ugly and doesn't fit on that well. That's a fairly minor issue, especially considering the price and performance of this putter.
On long putts I can easily line it up and it's no different on the short ones. The feel is just right for me, not too firm and not too soft, so they got the insert just right.  I just have so much confidence with this thing that I can't say enough about it. I would have paid five times as much if I knew it was going to make this kind of difference in my game. My putting stats show that I've dropped almost four strokes off my rounds. I was averaging thirty six PPR and now it's down to thirty two I took no lessons and used no training aids. It was all the putter. If someone would have told me a putter would shave three to four strokes off my game I would have laughed at you!

Bottom line is I love this putter. What a value the guys at Dicks have come up with....they made a world class putter for the $100 range. Thank you MY GOLF SPY, without this site I would never have given this a chance. You saved me spending $400+ on an Evenroll, so thank you guys for that.

      Looks – 7/10
      Feel – 9/10
      Alignment – 10/10
      Value – 11/10

Overall – 9/10 – I highly, highly recommend this putter.
