Eyeline Impact Ball Liner

Recommended Posts

I tried something similar a couple of years ago.  My putting got worse as I was unable to consistently align the mark with the line of the put.  I would readjust multiple times which caused doubt and never confident in my line.  I prefer my final adjustments to my putting line made while standing directly over my ball.

Never thought about using the line off the tee.  This is something I will try at the range.

Glad you found an aid to help your game.  I think we all try different ones hoping it will help.

I had similar results to @ED13 when I tried using an alignment aid years ago. I've even tried it a couple times more recently just to verify. I do much better without it as I just can't ever seem to get the line on the ball setup right. I prefer to pick on spot on the green between the ball and the hall and visualize a putt line and pace based off that.

I bought the Eyeline Golf Impact Ball Liner after seeing an ad on Facebook, and I wanted to make sure I did a quick review for everyone here on the forums.

I consider myself to be an above average putter. I two-putt more often than not, and recently with an improved chipping game I’m seeing many more one-putt holes. It’s not uncommon, however, for me to have two or three three-putts over 18 holes, especially if the greens are pretty speedy.

GAME Golf actually places my putting strokes gained around that of a 15-20 handicapper, although because of the finicky pin system I’m not 100 percent confident in those numbers. Statistically, in my worst round this year I averaged 2.11 putts per hole; my best round 1.56 putts per hole.

The Eyeline Impact Ball Liner made its way onto my radar after the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. The winner, Nick Lashley, was featured on Eyeline’s Instagram page because he is also a user of the Impact Ball Liner.

I already was using the ball’s alignment aid for putting at the beginning of the year. After reading about Maxfli centering their alignment aid on the ball’s center of gravity, I purchased a Check-Go Pro, which I started using on all of my golf balls. I now use the Eyeline Impact Ball Liner in tandem with the Check-Go Pro. Using the Check-Go Pro, I mark the ball’s center of gravity using a washable marker. I then align the Impact Ball Liner along that line, and mark with a permanent marker. The remaining washable marker is easily wiped off with a damp cloth.

Eyeline (and Hank Haney, the endorser of the product) claim the squared line will aid in making short putts, as the putter face is more easily-aligned to the desired start line at address.

At $14.95 delivered for a three-pack, I figured it was worth a shot. Even if the line shaved one stroke a round, it would be well worth it.

Initial Thoughts

I’ve been playing with Eyeline-marked balls for 54 holes now, two 18 hole rounds and two nine hole rounds. During this stretch, I averaged 1.83 putts per hole. GAME Golf actually says statistically I am now a worse putter than earlier in the season. I’m not so sure about that.

I love having the perpendicular line for alignment. It makes it much easier to place your ball with the center of gravity/alignment line on your intended line. Combined with the sightline on my TaylorMade Spider Tour Red, it’s now very easy to feel confident the face is matching the desired start line.

Surprisingly, I am most enjoying the additional marking when teeing off. It’s awesome to have the line to better align my driver and irons from the tee box. I hit 6-of-7 fairways during a nine-hole round last week with my driver, and I believe the Impact Ball Liner is a huge reason for that. It is very nice to pick a target, align the line to that target and just make a good swing. It frees me up from having to find a divot or other item on the tee box to which to align my clubface.

IMG_11082019_175701_(1080_x_800_pixel).jpg.dda6e22513341d86fc92e12e45b36f3d.jpg

As far as negatives go, I wish these were sold in packs of two instead of three. I can see keeping a spare around, but I doubt I’ll ever use the third. I will probably end up giving it to my brother-in-law if he is interested. Also, the included marker is fatter than a Sharpie and a little more “wet,” if that makes sense. I marked my first few balls with the included marker, but realized it was bleeding under the cutouts and leaving smudges on the ball. The included marker also seemed to be easily rubbed off on the course. The second set of balls I did with a Sharpie and didn’t have issues with smudging or with the lines easily wearing.

All in all, I find the additional marking to be very helpful to my game. I never used to be a big fan of heavy marks on my golf balls, but I think these marks in particular are going to help my score.

I suppose if someone was handy with 3D printing these would be pretty simple to make. But for less than half of a box of premium balls, I think the price of the Impact Ball Liner is well worth it.

Curious as to the purpose of the center 'notch'? The perpendicular line makes sense and other ball markers have that same slot - any added value to this marker over others that have the straight and perpendicular line? .

The included card says the center notch marks the center of the ball. Not something I use, but I guess if you were really concerned about the lines being perfect, you'd want that to face directly upward when placed.

Of course, if everyone starts worrying about that, too, we might as well all DeChambeau it and take 2 minutes to line up an eight foot putt.

@edingc Thanks for the review. How do you feel about the curved line at the bottom of the mark (closest to the clubface) vs. a straight line? I have a similar marking cup that I took off an old Adidas bag that makes more of more of a + shape, but I often shift the crossbars toward the face to make a mark similar to this (only difference is mine is a straighter line, where EyeLine has a curve to match the shape of the ball) -- I'm curious if the curve makes much of a difference at address.

Ok thanks. BTW the perpendicular line looks more like a frowny face  - maybe anticipating my missed putt? 😂

My pictures probably make it look really curved. It is definitely a straight line, 90 degrees perpendicular to the equator line from address, and you really don't see the curve around the ball at all.

I suppose if your mark is more of a "plus sign," when you roll the straight edge closer to your clubface, the lines bend more around the ball horizontally, correct? To me, this line stays straight from the top-down view.

Hope that helps. I've noticed in the Instagram post that Lashley doesn't mark his ball as thickly as mine. Might make his seem a little more curved.

I cannot get a line on a ball to line-up with the line of a putt. I’m way too OCD for that! Plus, on the greens I play, that are Bermuda, the ball ALWAYS oscillates slightly as well. Heck, 1/2 the time I don’t even bother touching the ball once on the green! Leave it as is and putt!

Yup, my + straight line does actually end up a bit diagonal after the adjustment, but it's still perpendicular to the target line. As you noted, the eyeline design makes it look straight from top-down. I'm just curious if you've tried both methods and whether there is a noticable difference in ease of alignment. Then again, for $15, it might be worth a shot anyway.

This is a very interesting idea but not one that I am willing to start now. I feel as if the normal line is plenty for me as I always line it up but rarely focus on it. When using these type of alignment aids I always tend to overthink it and struggle much more.

I have started to just line it up and pick a spot on the green I want to roll the ball over and I have found this helps much more for me. Let me know how his helps you guys as I find this very interesting and I want to see the impact i has on your putting.

I have been looking into trying a ball liner to see if it is something for me.. This looks very interesting to me but sadly they are a bit pricey and not even sure about shipping cost or if it is even available to Sweden. I do however have a friend with a 3D printer and since I´m working as a 3D model designer I think I will try a few different designs and see what I think. I´ll keep you updated with my thoughts and what design I prefer.

  • 2 weeks later...

I absolutely need a line on the ball for putting.  I've just started using a check go but used a cheap ebay ball liner before that.  I haven't used the "square the club" line for putting or driving - I'll have to add that and give it a go.

If you are trying using a line for the first time, you have to put in a couple of practice sessions on the practice green to experiment with where the ball is in relation to your body when first lining up the ball.  I'm right eye dominant so when I squat down to aim the ball, my right arm is just inside my right knee.  Then you back up several feet to confirm the line, align your putter to the line on the ball and putt.  When you stand over the ball, the line will not look like it is aimed where you want, you have to trust what you did.  When I am standing over the ball, all I am thinking about is pace since I already figured out the line.  It's improved both my accuracy starting on the intended line and my pace control.  YMMV.

But I am definitely in the minority in my senior club - most people do not have a line on their ball although judging from their lack of ability to start the ball on a good line, some should try it.

Yes, I love having my line already figured out and just focusing on pace. I'm not sure if the parallel line has helped my putting a ton, but it certainly hasn't hurt it.

Today was not a great putting day, but that was a function of pace and green reading. I am finding my putts are starting on my intended line more frequently lately. I do think that additional line has made it easier to ensure the line is exactly on my intended target.

I'm a guy that probably goes against the grain on this stuff. I don't like a line marked on my ball. Ok, I guess I could see it for practice putting. Most balls I like to play already have some sort of unobtrusive alignment aid printed on the ball and I use that. However, I'm not a complete hypocrite because in the past I have used a sharpie and a marking device to make a thick solid line on the ball. But I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. On my golf ball that is. Quite frankly I think I'd be just fine if golf balls had no lines or logos of any kind. Completely white. 🏌️‍♂️

I wanted to add some numbers to this review now that I've played eight rounds with "Impact-lined" balls.

I understand simply going off putts per round is not the greatest statistic, but it's one of the easiest comparisons to make. To help make the statistics fair, I'm only comparing rounds played at my home course. Had I included two rounds I played at a different course with faster greens, it would have unfairly skewed the numbers in favor of the new markings by well over a stroke:

Last eight rounds with "Impact-lined" balls  - 1.8625 putts per hole / 33.525 putts per 18

Previous Eight Rounds with only a straight line mark - 1.87 putts per hole / 33.66 putts per 18

So, not a lot of difference. I did putt really poorly this past Sunday (37 total putts, including four three-putts). But the poor putting was a function of poor green reading, not an inability to start the ball on the correct line.

GAME Golf says I'm actually about a stroke worse when comparing the two eight-round time frames, while every other part of my game has been better.

What do I make of this? Not much, really. I'd have to do a much deeper analysis of first putt distances to really get to the bottom of it. I actually hit fewer greens on average during the eight rounds playing with the Impact line, so I should have had shorter first putt distances as my chipping has been decent lately.

I also have not seen a discernible increase in fairways hit by lining up the ball from the teebox. I hit roughly 45 percent of fairways during both samples.

Am I going to continue lining my balls with the Impact Liner? Yes! If anything, it's much easier to line up your putt on the green with the addition of the perpendicular line. I was already someone who lined their putts up anyway.

I'm finding a groove with my putting routine now after experimenting with different things all season.

Lining up the ball's start line with the line marked on my ball is the first piece of my routine.

Being right-eye dominant, I've started closing my left eye to better align the line.

Played a brand new to me course last night and had a season low 30 putts, and most of them were by no means gimmes.

Thanks for the reminder about eye dominance. I recall reading about it but totally forgot. I'm left eye dominant so will try closing my right eye for putting.

Just going to add my 2 cents to this. As I said earlier I tried a few different designs by 3d printing some line markers. Tried the regular straight line, the Eyeline Impact type design, a big plus sign at the top of the ball and a line with an arrowhead. I did like the Eyeline Impact design the best when I stood above the ball for sure. It was easy to line up my putter to the ball, however lining the ball up to the hole is a totally different beast. The process of lining the put from just behind the ball, then go back a few feet to check the line, to go back and adjust and then finally stand above the ball and feel totally wrong about the line from that angle had me abandon this little project of mine for now.

I gave it quite a few practice sessions and a few full rounds of golf and without any hard data I feel my performance is worse with the line just because the feeling of the line being a fraction of a degree off and not feeling confident at all putting. So I don´t think this is for me. I might give this another try over the off season when putting indoors.

But if I would feel more confident lining the ball this would probably help with putting a lot.
