Forged Irons - Fixing dings

I hit a hidden pebble under my ball this past weekend that left a decent gouge in my 8 iron. It won't affect play at all, but these are the first set of irons I purchased new and are less than a year old. I want to keep them looking as good as new for as long as possible. Anyone out there have experience/tips for sanding out dings on 1025 forged carbon steel?

Sanding is not the problem to smoothing out the ding. A grinder, belt sander or even a file can do the job .

However,  in every case but the raw finish there is some sort of coating or finish on the head and while you are taking out the ding you are also taking of the coating. This exposes the "raw" metal. If you wipe off the club regularly and at the end of the season place a coat of wax on the area you should be good for a long time. Unless you like the rust patina look on the set.

Thanks, I will probably start with low impact sanding to be safe. I wonder how that would impact the DBM finish on my Cobras since they are supposedly chemically implanted...

Dings suck but forged irons get nicks and Dinh’s easily. Also these are clubs that hit both a solid object and the ground. Imo the wear and tear on them is what gives them character

I understand where you're coming from, but dings are going to happen regardless. If you really want it gone or at least smooth it out so it doesn't seem as obvious, a file will do the trick. No idea what it will do to a DBM finish, but that's what I'd do if I wanted to get rid of a ding.

I've never worried or had a cause of concern from nicks, dings, chatter on my irons. They're made to take a beating by the very nature of what they are designed to do. I get that equipment can be expensive and players wanting to protect their investment and such. But, I also look at my nicked and dinged irons as being sufficiently broken-in. I can't see the sole of my irons when addressing the ball. So who cares? I also have never understood putting covers on my irons either. Kind of goofy if you ax me. Has anyone ever seen a carpenter putting a protective cover on the head of his hammer?

I know that this take is the logical one and I will definitely care less over time, but that mentality was a lot easier for me with the earlier sets I bought on eBay! 

In the meantime I'll play a few rounds before doing anything and see if I get less annoyed looking at it in my bag...appreciate the insight

Believe me, I hear you. I dinged one of the Bridgestone wedges I got for testing at the beginning of the year. My first thought was to somehow make it look less terrible, but in this part of the country rocks are not buried that far below the surface. I could easily wind up with another ding just as soon as I do something to make this one look better.

It's not an apples-to-apples comparison because I had the good fortune of getting these wedges free from Bridgestone and MGS, but trust me when I say I feel your pain. That first ding on an otherwise pristine club is just heartbreaking.

A single lady friend of mine was going to play a round with a single male.  He showed up with iron covers.  She left him standing on the tee box.   Seriously...friends don't let friends sport iron covers!

Don’t let these guys bully you out of using head covers! Keep those clubs looking good if you want to! I do, and I wipe em off after every shot.

But when I use the iron cover it keeps them looking really nice, it also helps keep some value if you want to get rid of them
