Shankster: A Solo Story / Take 38

Recommended Posts

I’ve been combating injuries for a few years now. I don’t want to sound like Tiger, but it is taking a toll on me.

In my attempt to prolong my golfing “career” I’ve made a decision to try a different swing.

I’m not going full Bryson. More to come, but my preliminary attempts have been interesting.

I don’t want to shatter your viewing screens just get.

Baby steps my friend, baby steps.

Starting with some pitch shots. Taking it all to the range tomorrow. I am fully committed to converting. I’ve already alleviated some of my back pain, just from the simple change.

I think it lends itself nicely to match with my tendencies in my swing.

What WAS your swing? Drop/lay-off the club on the downswing, big turn left?

Jokes aside. It was all arms and too steep. No turn. Block fest.

Been reading about transitioning to a single plane slowly. This is step 1 of many.

So far so good.

One plane was how my coach had been teaching me before he went to some radical deal. I was doing quite well with it until he changed everything.
Good luck! It’s a great foundation for consistency.

I did the single plane swing for 10 years.  It straightened out my slice, and I finally could play decent golf.  Last year I changed back to a two-plane swing because I was losing distance.  Although I could hit the ball straight, I wasn't hitting it as far as I thought I should.  Since I stopped the single plane swing, I have gained yards; not a lot, but at my age, not losing any more yards is a plus.  My swing is still a work in progress, but some of the single plane pieces are still there... and I still hit the ball reasonably straight.

Good luck!!

I hear you. I am doing it for the opposite. My distance is gone almost overnight with my regular swing. Feels like I have to go 120% to get anything to happen.

I don’t have much turn in my swing due to lower back injury from years ago, and trying to rotate on that is making me feel like I shouldn’t be hitting shots at all recently.

This new swing I am working on allows more of a slide forward.

As I posted in the Blueprint thread. This one plane, or whatever I am doing is really working for me.

2 large buckets today, working on the set up, and basics of my new swing.

My biggest issue is getting my alignment correct. As it stands the target has to be inline with my lead shoulder. I was used to having it aligned with my hands, being so far open.

More straight than anything really, they’d fall off either way a little, but mostly straight rockets. I did have a few get away from me and hit a big block fade, and a snap hook (with my 3 wood, something I hadn’t done in a few years). I actually didn’t mind seeing the snap hook.

But two big misses out of 2 buckets is something I’ll take every time I go.

Also finding it is super easy to flight the ball on various trajectories with this set up.

Looks good

What are you telling yourself during transition to keep from falling off your takeaway plane?

Nothing.

Got rid of all swing “thoughts”. They just get in the way. Step up, aim the face and pull the trigger.

Do you think you will need to make adjustments to the lie of the irons? Does the single plane swing impact that due to the higher hands?

Been watching a bunch of videos about him.

Too bad he came up when being different was looked down on.

Don’t like the commercialism of the Graves academy stuff, but Moe himself along with Kirk Junge are my inspirations for this “project”.

So far I can’t complain. I do think the short game will be the most difficult thing to get used to. I use a lot of handsy shots, but that bleeds into my full swing and that isn’t good.

This is super simple. I hit shot after shot today “dead straight” as Moe would have said. Pretty crazy considering how my last outing with Stud was, I was getting my fair share of short right in the rough.

I was coming in OTT lately. I didn’t even try to get rid of that. Just extended backswing a little further, not much of a turn, then my slide works wonders by bringing it back on plane. If you snap shot my set up and impact you’ll see it looks almost identical.

I physically can’t turn my hips fast enough to make a 2 plane work with how fast I want to swing. This is the best thing I’ve done for my golf game. Hands down. Slows me down a bit, and it works for my decomposing back.

Definitely will have to go flatter a little.

That makes sense. When I was just setting up to the ball as a point of reference - it was clear that I would need to change my lies as well.

I have always been fascinated with Moe. I appreciate his quirkyness and his ability to create a swing based on hitting millions of shots. The mental side of Moe is extraordinary as well and perhaps not as well known. Truly an interesting character that has absolutely been commercialized but he was special. I have watched a few clinics he had done and his way thinking and speaking was one-of-a-kind. Glad this is working for you. I can certainly appreciate the back issues and anything that lightens the load on the back is well worth it.

Its funny you mention the extension because on the video you posted above it looks like it’s got some Rahm with that wrist set on the downswing.

Haha.

Well anything is better than what I was doing.

Swung the clubs for about 3-4 hours total between the range and the yard. No back pain. Had I done that last week with the old swing I would be in need of a chiropractor, hot tub, and a bottle of Motrin.

Pretty interested in that documentary they are making.

Sort of off topic, but I’d like to see a Tom Watson film. Similar to the Seve Movie, but while he is still around and can have input. I think that would be a great story, especially since he is the epitome of what golf should be.
