I started playing golf 5 years ago at 60 years old. I’m not particularly coordinated in sporting endeavors. I have worked hard to improve and my handicap has gradually come down to 24. Putting is the only aspect that ever felt easy and natural to me. I have a theory that putting is easier for visual learners like me.

I’m a happy, patient but determined golfer and enjoy playing with other good vibes golfers. I’m happiest when doing things with my husband (almost 45 years a golfer) and my son - @downlowkey, so I guess golf was eventually in my future. I love to practice, but refer to it as "research" time. I typically play/practice 2-3 times a week but rarely play 18 holes two days in a row.

My Swing. Thank you to Aaron Speaker, the head pro at The Club at Colony Creek, for making these for me today! The thermometer showed 101 degrees for us out there!

Put me down as jealous of that swing too.  I only hope mine can look that good after 5 years.  By the way, great stage 1 and very cool looking collage.

Thank you. To use that frame I actually took it off the wall and removed my artwork. I wanted to show a combo of two of the several things I'm passionate about - golf and art.

That was really, really clever!  I have to echo what the others have said.  I hope my swing looks that smooth in 2 more years!

OK, time for my first review update.

I know I just completed my Stage 1 review last night, but I've already been playing with these new irons. So it's time for my first weekly post. I've played 3 rounds and 2 practice sessions in the last week and half.

Wilson_1stUpdate_Inbag.jpg.e8e575583ef385512da4b11a6345b88c.jpg

First round was not a not a great success. Except for working with the SuperStore fitter to adjust these irons to fit me, I had not been able to hit them. I smacked 7 trees and two went in the water for a 103! My reason (but not an excuse) - it was also my first time to get ShotScope to work so I kept fiddling with it, first time playing a new type of ball, not playing my home course and very nervous playing with 2 very good golfers I had not played with before. I guess I need some bum rounds to know what a good one is.

Second round was a a big sigh of relief. I improved by 10 strokes and finished one more than my personal best. This time I was playing by myself so I could concentrate on what I needed to do in working with new clubs and ShotScope. Too bad I couldn't turn in the score.

Either ShotScope is confused on which club I've been using or my new 6 iron has been sprinkled with magic dust. In both rounds it shows I hit it farther than my 4 iron and once farther than my 5 wood (178 yards). I checked my ShotScope setup and it is correct. I'm not seeing a significant distance improvement yet with the other irons but I'm liking the accuracy.

Practicing on the range was interesting. I don't have equipment to show how far I'm hitting on the range but I found that I love hitting these rather than my hybrid irons. Wasn't sure if I would like the glare off the shine on these but pleased it doesn't seem to bother me.

3rd round almost doesn't count. It was a 2-person scramble and we could each use only 5 clubs. The D7s I opted for were 5 iron, 7 iron and gap wedge. My team didn't win but I learned how far I can it the 5 iron which was about as far as my partner's 5 wood. I also learned how to choke down on a club to turn it into a shorter iron with varied success. I want to practice this.

The perfectly polished finish is already showing wear. I'm proud to say that all of these scratches and smudges belong to me.

I haven't played this week yet because I've been spending time on writing my review. I plan to play this weekend and then travel to a tournament in San Antonio on Monday. I'll let you know how it goes with my post next week. Cheers.

@artful_golfer first off I want to say great job on your stage 1! You can add me to the list of people who are jealous of how smooth you're swing is, I've been playing on and off for around 25 years and haven't achieved that nice of a tempo. Great job on your scoring improvement from your first round, it can be rough the first time out with new equipment. Keep up the good work!

Way too early first impressions:

Accuracy and forgiveness on these irons is impressive.  I have hit a number of balls thin and the ball still got up and carried.  Proof in the pudding, from 200 out, I caught a 4 iron thin with a touch of fade and had my first GIR with the D7s and a GREAT look at birdie that I missed by about two inches.  I blocked a 9 iron and 7 iron, but they stayed the course and still gave me a great look at the green.  Another surprise popped up in how well these clubs communicate back to you when you miss the center of the face.  That is something I started to learn more about with my Pro Combos because previous game improvement irons really muted the feedback.  But like any good iron, these clubs feel great when you smash the center of the clubface.  They are surprisingly  soft.

Some things to keep an eye on:  I am not getting anything like distance increase expected from the loft decreases per iron.  These DG AMTs feel heavy as they can be roughly 10g heavier than my previous shafts.  I think that might have something to do with it. But the clubhead also feels heavier through the swing, causing what feels like more shaft flex through the downswing, especially when I try to step on it a little bit.

I was concerned about a lack of spin, and that showcased itself on the par 5, 13th hole.  I played a ProV1x with a 6 iron into the middle of the green.  Our greens really work well with high spin players and with my old 5 and 6 iron from the same distance I will see 6-7 yards rollout max (generally a touch less) on this particular green.  I hit the best iron shot all day here just a touch of fade and the ball landed middle of the green but ran out somewhere between 10-12 yards to the very back of the green.

More to come.

Are you seeing consistent distances with these irons when struck well?  When I did the D7 challenge my Cleveland launchers were all within 2 yards of each other.  The D7 irons not so much so I'm curious if this translates to the course for all of you.

Thanks for the compliment but don't include me on that list so quickly. Things are not always how they seem. That swing speed was when I was fresh and rested. Have no idea if I can do it again. You can't tell it in the video but my right wrist is heavily taped. I'm playing with a sprained wrist and being very cautious, so right now my swing speed is about 25 mph less. Wait until @GolfDorkette posts her review - her handicap is only 8 so I imagine her swing blows many of us out of the water.

I haven’t noticed inconsistent differences out of the center yet. I will be sure to run a test for them over the next week or two.

I have noticed that I don’t seem to lose as much from the toe side of center.  Will keep you posted on what I find.

D7s impressed today.  I didn't have my best swing today and still managed to have good day.   As much as these are a SGI iron, you can in fact shape a shot with them if you need to.  Really struggling right now with the 4 and 5 iron.  But the wedge has been a surprise and has been useful around the green.

Same with me. I struggle some with the 5 iron but love the shorter irons. The gap, pitching and 9 irons have worked well.

I have not reached a point in my skill level that I know how to shape a shot. I'll have to work on finding someone to teach me that (@downlowkey?). Right now I'm happy if the ball goes straight where I aim it. That accuracy is happening more with these D7s. I haven't had any of those wild almost right angle mishits (left or right) with these.

I probably should put a qualifier with the shaping statement.   I am very happy hitting one straight and where I am aiming, and I cannot fine tune the shape of my ball flight.  However, now that my swing is finding a groove, I have learned what causes and how to hit a fairly significant slice and an ugly duck hook.  I just don't know how far left or right that slice and hook will go 😆.  So for you better ball strikers, these irons can move the ball.

Wilson D7 update: Finally getting my distances down with the irons. Had a great week last week where I shot my personal best of 82! Now I know the irons were not completely responsible but they did help immensely. The last 2 weeks I even got the closest to the pin on one of our par 3 holes in our league the first time this year I was able to put my name down! Im really getting confident with my 4i and 7i. My round today was the complete opposite of last week but that was do to my driving and putting:(. I think my swing was a little off today causing me to miss some GIR that I got the last few weeks. Its a never ending battle but happy so far with the irons.....

Have you two been using the D7 wedges around the greens much?

Yes! I put my Pings away (except my hybrid 4 iron) so I would be forced to use all of the D7 line up and I love the wedges. I use a Cleveland 56° for my sand wedge. A sand wedge wasn't an option in the D7 ladies set, but that's ok because I like the Cleveland. I seem to be able to make "softer" (don't know what else to call it) chip shots that generally end up closer to the hole which convert to more 1 putts. Last Saturday I had a round with six 1 putts and 1 chip in. Five of those 1 putts were 3' or less, one was 6' and the chip in was about 14'. ShotScope shows me that those chip shots to the green were between 33.5 yds and 9 yards.

At the same time I started using the D7s, I switched to a new ball (after studying the MyGolfSpy golf ball test). I chose the Bridgestone Tour B XS. I have no idea if the better chipping is from the D7 wedges, my new ball, or a combination, but I certainly like it. I did need to adjust how I think about my chip shots, because they stick more with some moving only a few inches after they hit the green. I've never been able to get a handle on a bump and run scenario, so I have a tendency to hit a bit of a lob shot.

Before the D7s, I always felt safer using my putter, even a few feet off the green than my wedge. But now I'm more confident about using the D7 Gap Wedge when close.

The B XS is a fantastic ball.  I have started switching to that ball as well.  Your short game numbers are impressive.  I need to get some more practice with my D7 gap wedge.  I seems like the ball is coming off "hotter" and I keep flying the ball too far and the ball seems to roll out a little bit more than I expect it to.

Thanks.

Fairway shots have always been my problem area. I need more practice with the 5 iron. I have needed and avoided it because I am so inconsistent with it. It's to the point that "oh no, will it work this time" pops in my head when I'm over the ball. I feel like it's partly mental because I did hit some great shots with it in 1 round.

My post-order fitter adjusted the lie 2° flatter and I wonder if even flatter would be better. His 2° adjustment on irons 6-9 seems to be good and we left the lie on the 2 wedges standard.

He also told me these clubs at the standard length are too long for me but I'm accustomed to gripping down on all of my clubs. Maybe a couple of range sessions devoted to only the 5 iron will force me to figure it out.

Week Two update for Wilson D7 irons

Because of work commitments I was able to play 18 holes only twice since my last update and no range time. I will try to do better this next week.

The best news is this past Saturday I scored an even better personal best of 90. That's 2 personal bests with these Wilson D7s. I like it!

The not so good news is that my consistently inconsistent self had a terrible round two days later.

I'm loving both wedges - Pitching and Gap.

For the Saturday round (home course) I was delighted with great wedge shots. 10 wedge shots to within 8' or less of the pin (6 within 4'). I used the Pitching Wedge for distances of 46-64 yards and the Gap Wedge distances from 6.5 to 43.5 yards. So at this point, the wedges are winning my golf heart. The Gap Wedge keeps feeling like soft hits that stop pretty quick after landing and I'm starting to successfully judge wedge distances. A number of my drives and 3-wood shots ended up in the rough so I did get to test my 6 and 7 irons and Pitching Wedge from the taller stuff - happily successful.

The round on Monday was a 2-person scramble at The Club at Sonterra in San Antonio which we played sight unseen. Oh my, beautiful and fun course but all of those ravines, trees and boulders poking out in the fairways and a number of blind shots managed to eat our lunch. We had lots of good hits along with lots of bad luck bounces that left us in trouble or with lost balls on fairway shots. Once again the wedges seemed to gave us a decent short game. We managed to conquer the course with a hefty 98.

I still struggle with consistency with the 5 iron and perplexed why I hit the 6 iron so well. The fitter that help me after I received the clubs showed me a computer graphic that clearly indicated I was hitting everything low on the face and a little off center toward the toe. That's part of the reason he changed the lie to flatter. When I concentrate on trying to hit closer to the hosel, my results with the 5 iron improve. Oddly with my Pings, the hybrid 5 iron was the club that was the most troublesome and I avoided it when I could.

I understand that Wilson decreased the loft on these irons in favor of longer distance. I don't seem to have any trouble getting the ball in the air but my distance varies. The launch monitor showed that my avg launch angle for the Wilson 7 iron was 19.3 vs 20.3 for my Ping 7 iron. Is that a significant difference? The distance with my Ping was very consistent (within 4 yds) but the D7 had a 24.6 yard variance (both above and below my Ping). That is still holding true. Except for the wedges I'm not confident in choosing the correct club for distance. A solid hit flies quite a bit farther than I expect and a so-so hit will fall quite short even though both will be more accurate in regards to the target. My goal is starting to shape into getting the ball close enough I can use a wedge.

Summary so far with the Wilson D7s: The wedges are wonderful.❤️ The accuracy in the ball going toward where I think I'm aiming is an improvement.👍 The inconsistency in distance (except for wedges) makes that aspect a surprise.👎

I'll check in with another update next week . . . and maybe during the week. Cheers!

I'll be interested in hearing everyone's experiences with using the D7 irons for touch shots around the greens, bump & runs, etc. If you get a chance to use them in a round or during practice for those purposes, post up your experiences if you can!

I don't have a lot of experience with them in this setting...yet.  My golf hours last week were almost none with the exception of one morning on the range so take this with a grain of sand as it is from memory of being on the course two weeks ago.  I expect to have more experience to work with over this week and next.

My experience thus far has included a dozen or so bump & runs and a 15-20 pitch shots 50 yards and in, the longer shots coming strictly with the G wedge and a mix of clubs for bump & runs.  The turf interaction with the G wedge has been exceptional.  The pitch shots have all felt great as the wedge just seems to pick the ball off of the turf and send it greenside right on the intended line.  I have noticed what seems to be less carry height than before which is leading to more runout than expected, all with ProV1 or 1x.  I haven't quite gotten then ball to check really at all.  I need more time to determine whether I need an adjustment period to get used to the wedge or if it is a wedge/shaft combination that is hurting the pitch shots.

Bump & runs

Practice green and on course, I have tried to stick with G/P and 9 iron.  Mostly the former two of the set.  Again, I have liked the wide sole as it has performed admirably to prevent the dreaded chunk.  The short clubs really have shown to be "hot faced" around the green for bump & runs.  My distance control has been atrocious thus far.  They keep the ball nice and low with a good roll and generally go where you aim them with out much surprise.  I just haven't practiced with them enough to figure out where the ball will stop, yet.

This was my experience as well with both the C300s and D300s. The ball just seems to jump off and go much further than expected. Thanks for the info!!
