Woohoo I finally did it! The course was not busy this evening so I dropped 4 balls on this tee determined to figure out how to hit the Wilson 7 iron over the water and stay on the green. #4 ball stuck. After playing we went back to that same hole so I could conquer it again. YES, and within 4ft of the hole on the 1st attempt. Gee what a relief and confidence booster.

Next act - conquer the 6 & 5 irons.

Hey, maybe you're onto something here... conquer one stick at a time as opposed to the whole bag 😄

Had a case of the toey’s this weekend that I couldn’t fix and played the worst round of golf that I have played in years. But, the forgiveness on these irons continues to impress.  Bad strikes still continue to travel and get up in the air enough to hold a green.

One of my concerns going into this test was about stopping power.  So far so good.  8 and 7 irons from 160-175, are holding greens better than expected.  I don’t have photos of recent results, but runout has been around the 5 yard mark from these distances. The GW is producing spin to a rate combined with the moonshots it produces to the rate that shots are hopping and stopping or even pulling back from the ball mark.  This is a surprise.

As I get back into a steady practice routine and on the course more frequently, I’m going to do some head to head testing with the Nikes.

Did I mention how high of a ball flight these irons produce?

Really interesting look at clubs for 'playas vs clubs designed for forgiveness.

Finally had a chance to peruse through these reviews in more detail. Been following along with interest as Wilson is certainly producing some great looking clubs (and they continue to rock the power holes!). Looks like some of you have had great results with these irons.

Question for you testers: Has anyone seen a propensity for an occasional flyer from the irons, i.e. a face hot spot and not a flyer from the rough? My C300s produce an abnormally long shot every so often that travels a good 15-20 yards more than a typical shot, all other things being equal as far as my golfing ability allows.

I ask because during a recent fitting the fitter asked me if my Wilsons produced this type of random increase in length occasionally, and he didn't seem at all surprised when I said that they had. I'm assuming it's something he saw a lot with this particular head and/or with the power holes (they are a Wilson fitter and stock the complete line).

Yes sir, absolutely. It's an issue for me that I've alluded to since the beginning. At first I thought it was a reflection of me and my skill level but others have had similar distance issues. In my reviews I labeled it distance inconsistency but occasion flyers and a face hot spot are apt descriptions. The surprise happens more with the 5, 6 and 7 irons (especially my 6 iron).

Great question.  I haven't had any "fliers" to that extent.  If anything, I have had the opposite with the GW.   Occasional shots coming up 10 yards shorter than expected.  With that said, the 4-6 irons seem to be coming around at last so I should start getting some good data from them. Have you noticed fliers are more susceptible to one golf ball over another?

No. I've played with the same ball - Bridgestone Tour B XS. And I put all them through the salt water balance test before using them. (I have a few that I kept for "practice" only because they have rough surface areas.)

Funny you should mention your gap wedge. I personally think it was the design (it looks absolutely huge on my C300s and didn't really instill confidence), but I really struggled with that club going less than expected as well.

Played almost exclusively Snell MTB Black and MTB-X this season, didn't seem to affect one ball or another. But I can think of a few shots that really stick out. A 9 iron that carried almost 160 uphill, when my carry is more typically 135-145, a pitching wedge that carried 140 when 125-130 was expected and a 7 iron that carried 180 yards when 165 was expected. Again, maybe it was my ball striking, but there were definitely a few time where I went, "Huh?" this season.

That's interesting that you both are catching fliers with a ball that is generally more of a high spin design.  I figured that a low compression/lower spin design might be more susceptible.  Count me intrigued.

@edingc I definitely haven't had any of those instances outside of the first couple of times out on the course.  The only on comes to mind either the first or second time I had them out for testing.  I hit a PW 155-160 uphill but it was with a marshmellow ball out of the rough.  I haven't had that problem since.

I shared a similar sentiment to the GW when I first got it.  Strangely it has been my best performing club, even with the random loss in distance.

Today, I loaned my Wilson testing irons to another lady golfer to try out . So far after one round, she likes them and how they feel. Like me, she especially likes the graphics on the soft grips that help her line up the club face. She's going to keep them for a couple of weeks then I'll post her comments.

Well a little bit of digging in the dirt pays off (thank you, Mr. Hogan).  The 4-6 iron have started to come alive!  The last two tee shots with the four iron have resulted in a 220 yard GIR and a FIR during a modified scramble at Pinehurst.  I don't have accurate stats because of technology problems, but GIRs have been consistently on the rise, and my iron ball striking has been as consistent as ever.  These irons are really fighting for their place.

Back in my review I spoke of the feedback these irons produce being exceptional for game improvement irons---with the artic chill we have had, I have taken a little more time to hit balls on the range.  Wednesday I caught a ball thin with a 6 iron and knew it immediately.  My hands haven't stung that bad since I caught a fastball off the handle playing baseball in high school.

Sorta yes and sorta no - Wilson's irons offerings are in a bit of a flux for 2020. Blog post on these should be dropping this morning.

Doug Thiel, Wilson's Global Marketing Director, said last summer the feeling was that Wilson had too many iron sets (they had six) and that it was time to streamline and reset the offering. I think between the Launch Pad and now the D7 Forged, along with the Staff Model moniker, we're beginning to see that change starting.

For those that can't ever seem to find their way to the Home Page 🙂   Great stuff here as usual from @GolfSpy Barbajo

True, but since I get emails when they post new content, I usually just follow the link from there and haven't seen the actual homepage in a while.

Getting back to the D7 topic I hit Foz’s a couple of time’s on weds and was pleasantly surprised. In fact those were the two best irons that I hit all day.

What stunned me most was how great they sound.

Not sure how I missed your post, Rev.  You couldn't have said it better.  These irons don't play like the expectations from the category they are in.

UPDATE!

Thankfully shanking the rust off post Corona house arrest.  I believe an official update will have to soon follow.  The long irons that caused me so much trouble during the review period have really come to life this year and are absolute rocketships.   So much so they are slowly kicking my hybrid and 5 wood out of the bag.  Granted the ball flight is lower than those other clubs and I don't typically hit many greens from 200+ out, they do give me a more consistent option of getting it close.   Hitting low punches and get out of trouble shots has come around nicely for the 4-5 iron as well.  I have tested the forgiveness a little more fully as of late and am pleased to note that the D7s have bailed me out a number of times on less than stellar swings and have saved a number of pars.  One hole comes to mind where a toe side miss ended up only losing a touch less than 10% of expected distance with a 7 iron leaving me with a relatively easy 2 putt par.  This is leading to a consistency that I have rarely seen in my short golf life.

All is not rainbows and unicorns though.  I have started to struggle off the tee on short par 3's with the wedges and short irons.   I have had trouble hitting knock down and partial shots with wedges and short irons as well.

All in all, these clubs continue to impress.  The feel is still exceptional for the class and the sound is spot on.

Unfortunately this one kinda fell through the cracks.  Perks of being a SGI iron review, I assume.  I would love to have you join--either way I'll be active keeping up with your review.

Going back through the reviews this morning and I wanted to point out one of the highlights of having a female reviewer for the D7s.  @artful_golfer did an awesome job!  Ladies if you are in the process of looking for new clubs, be sure to read this review!

Is it safe to assume you are still enjoying the D7's? Any extra length show up since your stage 2?

I’m coming in here then! Wilson has been good to the MGS community and I was gaming C100’s when I played Sawgrass - 8 iron to the back pin on 17!

I purchased a set of D7’s on the cheap - thanks Foz!

IMG_1967.JPG

They arrived Saturday, hit a few shots on the range Tuesday, some chip shots with the GW yesterday and shot 37 with them I the bag today.

Given that my league is not playing until we can ride 2 in a cart and recent events are causing a secondary COVID spike - that may be never. :(

I am not using D7s right now. I had made the decision to keep them in my bag but then changed my mind and I switched to TaylorMade R7 Draw. I know the R7s are older technology but so far they seem to work for me. I already had the R7 4-iron. I thought it was quite humorous that my favorite club was a $1 thrift store purchase. So I decided to test the rest of the set.

I do still have the D7s and plan to try them again later this year. Your post will spur me to do that. My issue with the D7s was distance inconsistencies and I am curious to know if I would have that same issue again. I know my swing must be a factor in that scenario but I'm not having those surprises with my R7 set.

I’m curious if that inconsistency I’d through the bag or just with certain clubs?

Sometimes the “older technology “ is still pretty darn good for some players.
I play often w guys who have 10-12 year old clubs and they are still pretty good.
