Would you rather hit your 7 iron 175 yds some of the time?, or..

I dream of hitting my 7 iron 175 or even 145, then I wake up and face reality that I can only hit it 135 Wouldn't mind having irons that could get me more distance and I also think consistency and accuracy is more important. There's gotta be a way we can have both worlds

Would it be bad to say I’d take hitting it 175 all the time, if it meant I could put it where I want it? I currently carry 190...doesn’t do me any good if I can’t put it where I want it more consistently!

145 all day long. 150 is my usual 7i distance on a "good" strike, so if I knew 8 times out of 10 it was going 145 I'd be able to dial things in much, much better.

I say my average with the 7i is 155 but Shot Scope says my P average is 166...I'll stay at 155. I'm also not a real big fan of the super long shorter irons and it's taken me time to adjust to what I'm hitting now.

The case for distance irons is often dependent on the golfer. While many less educated golfers are likely to go for the club that provides the most distance, there are plenty of us that just want a club that will fill some void in our current game. Could be distance, could be spin, or shot shaping, or even getting some additional height and a better angle of descent. It could even be as simple as having an easier to hit long iron. The point is, while not for everyone, distance irons have their place and will continue to be produced for and purchased by golfers.

As to the specific question of whether I'd prefer long, but inconsistent distance, or shorter, repeatable distance, I obviously want the latter. My 7i currently carries in the 160-165 range. While I do want (a little) more distance, I don't want it from a hot club. I want it from making improvements to my swing and increased health and fitness.

I think this group knows well enough to go for the consistent number whatever that might be for their game.  I know that I consistently carry 7 iron 145 as a matter of fact - that means a total of between 150 and 155 depending upon course conditions but my stock carry is 145.

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

It’s about consistency. Regardless of what irons a player uses it should provide consistent distances on center strikes and that distance loss off center is consistent.

distance irons or even players distance irons are geared to help those who need to get the ball in the air and/or distance. If it allows some to hit a 7i further than their current 7i then great, it it doesn’t give them that distance consistently then it’s a badly designed iron,

Consistency over unpredictable distance for me.  Now if you asked me about helicopter throwing a club then I'd say the opposite 😁😂🤣  Just remember though, a lot of these clubs have strengthened their lofts so a 7 iron from one manufacturer or even between different lines within a manufacturer may be more a 6 iron from another.  It becomes a number game so go with the predictable distances.

If I played from the tips then yes, I wish I hit my 7 iron that far. But like the vast majority of the Spies I am an amateur, and happy with my 155-160 carry out of my 7 and being consistently accurate from white or blue tees depending what my playing partners want to play.

There are times where I indiscriminately hit the ball in the middle and not the bottom, and score it 175 as a worm burner though.

I’m playing clubs that are about 2 clubs shorter than my last clubs, but they are ALWAYS right on the number, and I’m really trusting them now, for those distances. And my last 3 rounds have been low city. But I have like 6-7 clubs I use that have me covered from 150 yds in, pretty much in 10 yds apart, and most of the time, your second shots gunna be somewhere in that range... and getting it on the short stuff with a birdie putt on tap, is where you score.

Another part of this concept which is a little annoying at times, (because I play with a few older gents who refuse to move up to the senior tees, even tho they’re well into their 70’s) is that if you don’t hit a drive that gets you to the 150 or in range, is to move up to the next tee box! Ok rant over, sorry... but taking 4 shots to reach the green on a hole that’s 350 yards is painful ... doh! Double rant...

anyways- good thoughts guys!!

I'd take the 145 every time.  What I would really like is the ability to hit irons much higher than I do now, but that is a swing issue.

7 is my 170 club and I try to keep it within a +/- 5 yard margin. I suppose a few extra yards would be fun but having a consistent yardage for certain clubs is a greater advantage than more distance.

I don't care what distance I hit any iron, as long as I know what club to hit at any given distance after considering lie, wind, etc.

Yep agree 110% in fact my stock carry is 145 also and as you know I am at sea level as you are. I also play traditional lofts. All of my 7 irons are in the 35* to 37* range. Most modern 7 irons are at 31* to 33* lofts. I can close the face some an hit at it and carry it 150 to 155 but I do not do that much. If in doubt I will pull the 6 iron and cut it some and take some off. I am one of those guys that does not care if someone hits their 8 iron where I hit a 6 or 7. I play my game and do my distances.

So dead on with this comment! I remember back in the day where everything was out drive the other guy or hit one iron less into that par 3 than he does... It was fun for a while, but when you see your scores stop moving - or worse, see them moving the wrong way, you realize that it's not about out gunning someone, it's about playing your game and learning what your clubs can do when you swing them. My blades have always been traditional lofts and checked at a minimum every few seasons - and believe me, sometimes they weren't so close to perfect anymore. I still say that the average player should find their 100 yard club, then build their set off that. If that's a lob wedge, then start the gap at 10 yards a club. If it's a 50° wedge, then probably 12 yards a club. You don't want to spread too much more than that, but you could stretch it to 15 yards if needed. Properly setup bags are a key component to scoring and getting that dialed in is all about being consistent with it, not being longer.

Now, with that said, SGI irons are a great answer for those that need the extra distance that are already moved up a tee box or two from where they used to play (or for those recreational players starting out from scratch) as they make the game a bit more enjoyable by eliminating the "horrid shots" with decent tech. It'a amazing to see 200 yard 7 iron, but if it doesn't find the green, it didn't do it's job.

145 all of the time. I a living the 175 some of the time right now and it can change over the course of a round depending on how sluggish I feel. To know it will only go 145 would be nice vs. thinking it will go ~150 and blow it by the green because I actually hit it well.
