Clothing recomendations for hot weather?

Ed Baggerly

Recommended Posts

I use primarily moisture wicking clothes - Under Armour heat gear, TaylorMade Golf shirts, Nike Moisture wicking shirts, etc and I choose light colors to better reflect the heat.  I also wear the same type material for pants/shorts, hats AND for underwear.  The other thing I do when it's hot is wear a Sun Mask/ Kavalava type which I dip in cold water and have it around my neck to help cool me down.

I wouldn’t never consider a vest in the hot weather.

Moisture wicking or whatevs similar technology/terminology companies use like performance, climacoool, heatgear, etc works well. Both shirts and shorts.

kentwool socks, motionwool from evolve or stance golf socks are helpful.

Ed, I can't explain why but I've generally found that less clothing works pretty good in hot weather for some reason. You know... things like shorts, short sleeve shirts, a cap or visor, light weight shoes or sandals, etc. I've also noticed in cold weather that heavier clothing and things like a coat, thicker socks, gloves, wool hats, etc. seem to keep a person warmer. Maybe it's just me. I don't know.

Through extensive testing of various types of clothing, I can confirm this.

Not playing in oppressive heat (triple digits) also works.

It's already been said, but moisture wicking shirts in light colors, light colored hat, golf shorts designed to stay cool, etc all work great.

Don't skimp on the socks!! My wife bought me some UA socks a few years back and I couldn't believe the difference they made in keeping my feet dry and cool during hot, humid rounds.

I've recently found the Duluth Armachillo underwear and undershirt to work pretty well (fair warning, they run big. Going down a size worked for me).

On particularly hot/humid and stagnant days, there's little to no effect. But when there's a breeze, there's a cooling sensation. When very windy, sometimes the tech actually makes me feel a little chilly, believe it or not. LOVE when that happens.

Light colors and moisture wicking outer garments are a must too. Along with their wicking characteristics, they also allow air to pass through more freely than cotton. That's really what helps the Armachillo wear to work.

I've found Swiftwick socks are best for me, especially combined with breathable golf shoes like my Puma Faas Lites and Adidas Climacools. I can feel the air on my feet with this combo.

For hottest days, I prefer a visor over any hat (I still have a full head of hair, may rethink if/when I start to lose it).

Recently tried the Aussie Chiller and even though wetting it will offer a short cooling effect, on the hottest days I've found that having my head exposed and allowing the heat to escape unimpeded works best.

Cooling towel absolutely offers some relief, just have to wet it down every few holes.

For the worst days I also wear golf sandals (taboo, I know!) and attach a rechargeable fan to the cart, blowing directly on my head/back of neck.

I don't fair well in the heat/humidity at all. While the above has never led me from miserable to cool, it's absolutely made me feel less miserable in the worst of it and at times, finding conditions quite tolerable.

This year I switched to hats made for runners.  I use a couple from Ciele.  Very lightweight and breathable.  Made to be scrunched up in a pocket when not worn and easily washable.  Golf logos not available and won’t be seen on tour if that matters to anyone.

I prefer to wear light color and cotton clothes in Summer. Like normally I wear shirts, skirts, jeans, short, t shirt, hat and all these things in summer. I love to wear long boots but in summer I avoid to wear them and normally I don't wear sunglasses but In summer I do wear it.

The best shirts that I've found for warm weather by far are the Peter Millar Featherweight polos.  You will not be disappointed with these and if you are, I don't know what's wrong with you.  Just kidding.

I know it's probably not popular but I actually like wearing sleeves (like compression sleeves) that are nice and breathable. Keeps the scolding hot sun off my arms and is much lighter than a long sleeve shirt. I also wear a hat from Titleist called an Aussie hat (I think) and is a full brim hat but it doesn't sit super high on your head like other full brims so is actually quite nice and gives more shade.
