Well then.

I am a QA Analyst for a digital web marketing agency. Like ski I skipped college but due to the fact my parents owned a pet supplies store business (if ya wanna know anything about pet food etc I'm a wealth of info) and I thought I was just going to inherit it. Boy was I wrong, somebody sold and retired. Anyways stumbled into QA @ 30 through a job at Electronic Arts and here I am today.

In Australia the school system is less oriented towards university. Trades skills are accommodated for in the last 2 years of high school with options to start your apprenticeship studies to make you more appealing to an employer because you have completed most of the study during school.

We have an enormous trade shortage in Australia, hence anyone with those skills is paid very well.

As for what I do for a living, I am an electrician by trade and have just finished working as the maintenance engineer on a gold / silver mine in Papua New Guinea. I have taken up a new position as the Maintenance Manager for a National Engineering Asset Hire company in Australia.

AJ

I disagree about the school system being less oriented toward university here, but I do agree a tradesman earns more than almost any other profession based on study vs wage. I used to earn less than my tradesman after completing a MBBS degree. I had to finish a RACS degree in order to get "over him" hehehe. Only took me twelve years of college lol

Don't know how I missed this thread and if I didn't do it elsewhere welcome JoBuhdda!

I guess my occupation should be pretty obvious from my screen name but just in case I am indeed the senior pastor of a nice sized congregation in St Petersburg, Florida. We have a PreK through 8th grade Day School on our premises, a staff of 24 fulltime and another 28 PT employees including teachers, a youth minister, deaconess and so on and so forth. Oddly I'm the only pastor on the staff although we have two retired ministers who are indespensible in helping me out.

As I'm reading these threads I find myself "asking what do these people do?" and how old you are too...

I'm 32 and I've been a high school Biology teacher for the last 9 years... I teach in the ghetto, and over the years I've had some great students and some terrible students... I've had students that have Super Bowl rings (JoLonn Dunbar - Saints), and students in jail for murder (one for killing a bum, and one for killing his girlfriends 9 month old baby for having an"accident" in the bed), and at least 2 that are dead. (1 in a drive by, 1 was suicide)... plus numerous other stories that I think are funny, but most people are disgusted...

Overall I love my job, and although there are some rough kids (maybe 10%), the good kids by far make up for them... Watching them walk across the stage is a great feeling...

So what do you do?

As little as possible...:)

That reminds me of a guy I knew. He moved a long time ago and I haven't been in touch. But he had money from somewhere. I never knew the story. But he didn't have to work. Every time someone asked him where he worked he said he worked for a firm called Seymore & Dolittle (See More & Do Little) ! That maybe an old joke. I don't know. He's the only one I've heard it from though. It always cracked me up. He had such a dry wit and straight face, most people would just say, "Oh, OK." as if, now they knew.

IT infastructure Architect and bully of CEO's and Boards that don't let me do what I need to make them money.

It's certainly an interesting job given the type of clients I help. I'll do everything from migrating companies to new accounting or email packages to all things IT security, routing, video conferencing and high end collaboration to building GIS server farms at a data center. If you want to do something, I can build it.

Hey Tuna, I've done some GIS work for our small water company, mapping the facilities. I've shot most everything in the field already. I built a database to work from myself and still have quite a bit to do to develop a working map and manage everything. Is this what you're talking about when you say GIS?

That sort of thing, but I make things roll on the backend.

Imagine 15 guys working on various mine drawings on 3 contitents. Now imagine them without a high powered fancy machine. Instead they're doing their work from a thin client. While some are working on their own stuff, 3 guys are on a video conference call talking about another drawing and all working on it as they talk adding and subtracting GIS guys to the call as needed.

I do the integration of technologies that makes all of that work seemlessly.

If I get into more complex projects, I'll hit you up for it. We haven't had much success with hiring anyone nearby for that sort of thing. Right now it's all on me on a local machine though. Not collaborating with anyone else on it.

Guess this is as good a place as any to make my first post. I am 40 and work for the Kentucky Court of Justice as a computer/network technician. My golf game has been virtually non-existent for the past 2 years - having triplets will do that to you. I am here now to find advice and help for my oldest sons golf game.

Welcome, jobuddah. What part of KY are you from?

I'm the "Old Dude" (says so on my ID Badge - lol) in the IT Dept for the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Worked my way up the career ladder my first 15 years to become the Sr System Engineer for the 5 state network and about 6 years ago stepped down a couple of rungs to just work for the local facility for less stress, less travel and more golf and family time ;)

Prior to entering the IT field, I was a professional musician and used computers for composition and recording, so when my hearing started to decline I was able to use that experience to "get a real job".

Just turned 60 and got myself setup to practice indoors in one of my outbuildings over the winter, so I can have "golf season" year round and ignore all the snow outside.

HaHa, please, call me Richard or since it's shorter/easier, RP. Huntington's actually a title given by MGS, based in total posts, of which probably 2800-2850 of mine are double & triple posts, lol.

Since these titles past 1000 & every 1000 thereafter are based on a geographical location, I figured Huntington was the only one that I knew, Huntington, WV, though nothin really golf related happened down that way, other than them discovering the game bout 15-20 years ago. And it was only in '04 that golf clubs were taken offa local law enforcement's "dangerous weapons" list cuz families were usin em to settle ages old fueds.

Now that I've exposed my ignorance, someone will surely enlighten me, lol :-)

Fairways & Greens 4ever

And enlighten you I shall, Huntington is actually Huntington Beach California, home of Cleveland Golf. All "Agent Names" are cities where the golf companies are located. Plano is Adams Golf. Huntington is Cleveland, Fort Worth is Hogan? was Hogan and is UST Mamiya, but typically just a shaft company is not enough. Fairhaven is Titleist, Phoenix is Ping and Carlsbad is TMag and Callaway.

I am a 36 year old father of three, married for 12 years to my college sweetheart and by training I am a CPA in a few states with an MBA in International Finance. Spent most of my career doing really technical geeky accounting work for SEC registered companies until a few years ago when I went into the family business. I am currently the VP of Finance for a casino property in Queens NY and soon to be CFO for our parent holding company. I still do most of the geeky accounting stuff and work a lot on financial modeling and planning for the NY property as well as the other properties that we have in the US and Bahamas..........I know really of life of danger and excitement. Best perk of working for a casino is that I get some sweet golf invites and play a lot of courses that are tough to get on......oh and my boss encourages me to play in a ton of "charity" events that we support in the NYC area.

What a change in three years. Closer to 40 and now the CFO of the Americas. No more geeky accounting for me and more oversight and development work. Oh and enough frequent flyer miles to go to the moon and back...twice.

Hmmm.... glad I found this.  Should be required reading for all noobs !

Guess I'll spill the beans...

For the past 15 years I've worked at Boston University in Information Systems & Technology.  I started as an application developer, moved to data integration, and am now working as a Business Intelligence/Data Warehousing developer working on creating data analytic applications for use by the University administration and schools & colleges.

I got my background in IT at the ripe age of 17 in the Marine Corps, moved on to IT consulting and then decided to settle in MA.  Went to school at night to get my undergrad degree at BU (free!) shortly after starting here.

Have lived in all 4 corners of the US (Eugene OR/Oceanside CA/Atlanta GA/Boston MA) and enjoyed each one of them.

Never have had any lessons/training, just kind of picked up some clubs, watched how they did it on television, read a couple of books and practice, practice, practice!
