With the new PGA season starting the new 2020 equipment is starting to show up on the practice greens/ranges. Saw some previews of the new stroke lab putters. Look familiar to anyone?

As the famous quote by Oscar Wilde states, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”

I'm not surprised at all with Odyssey's decision, and I'm sure it's - at least in part - in response to wanting to keep a TM product out of the hands of staff players or because the players have specifically requested the head shape.

I'm also quite sure the putter won't work as well for some current users of the TM Spider and will work better for others. My personal opinion though, is that the TM looks a lot better, but I'm not sure how I feel about the TM insert.

As others have said, I'm not surprised by the shape, what I'm more concerned about is if and how they've redesigned the insert. In our testing in the Stroke Lab thread it was pretty well uniform that all of us hated the feel off the face. Will be interesting to see how Odyssey plan on fixing that.

I hadn’t read up on the thread since I rolled one at the store and did not like the feel either. I’d like to try the Toulon design ones or If an odyssey full milled line comes out again, but no store around here seems to carry them.

I actually like the look at address of the Odyssey more than the TM.  Everyone expects all putter companies to have an Anser style putter in their lineup so why should we not expect companies to have different, more modern shapes like the Spider style in their lineup?

Odyssey isn't alone in this...

It doesn't appear the insert has changed on the 2020 Spider Stroke Lab. Looks exactly the same but I'm sure Odyssey's marketing dept will claim it rolls the ball 7% straighter than prior year models...with absolutely no change in the insert. If you notice, a lot of guys on tour that play a Odyssey stroke lab designed putter generally don't have the stock insert...it's either the old white hot insert or something other than the latest and greatest. I get that pros don't play on the same greens as the average golfer and getting the ball rolling isn't their top priority, but it is an eye opener on TV when the guys paid to play their equipment don't utilize the latest 'technology'

The toulon does feel more solid and you definitely get more feedback from the solid milled putter over an insert. The toulon face diamond mill design is more about sound at impact in relation to distance of how far the ball should travel than anything else. There's a really good interview with Sean Toulon about how the design originated with the help of Loren Roberts. Speaking from experience, if you mishit a toulon, you'll definitely struggle with distance control...which was why I switched from the Toulon Las Vegas back to an Evnroll.

Isn’t this what happened when Odyssey came out with the 2 ball many years ago? Not saying it’s right either way. 🙂

That said, I am playing a Stroke Lab 2019 R Ball and I’ve never putted better in my life. Not all the club, I realize, but I do feel like that shaft tech has helped me a lot, especially on off center hits.

I’ll be anxious to roll one of these new designs. I’ve never putted with a spider period.

The insert on these is very much personal preference; milled vs. insert is an entirely different comparison. I just put the 2018 EXO back in my bag after a re-grip (TOUR SNSR pistol) and putted lights out. I previously encountered some problems with speed control on the non-Stroke Lab EXO 7s which disappeared yesterday. I now feel like the white micro-hinge is more sensitive to strike location and delivered loft than milled or other inserts. Interested to see how putting holds up for the last few rounds before courses close up here in Canada.

got a first look at the putters. I still like the bird of prey.

Some notes:

1) the insert did change to a firmer/ louder type of insert. Or at least it makes a louder sound giving the feel of a firmer insert although it may not be.

2) The copy cat thing is kinda funny in that Toulon was part of the design team when with TM so,,,,,,, lets call it an extension of the design.

3) the black line will include some old friends in return of some other designs from popular putters past. stay tuned.

I think these were made specifically for the pros originally. Since they are on staff with Callaway, they are probably not allowed to use the TM or Scotty depending on their contract. Like Phil. He wants to try the style, but can’t because of his contract. So he basically forces Callaway to give him something. Just my guesses as to why they would do it.

I just purchased the Bird of Prey, it was the most consistent of all the putters that I tested. I played the spider when I played right handed  a few years . I compared the spider  against the Odyssey Number 10 and Bird of Prey and the Bird of Prey won out.  I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can putt on some real greens but so far in the store and on my indoor putting green at home me likely.......

As I understand it. Toulon who designed the odyssey 10. Designed, or helped design the spider. So, if it is a copy. Is he copying himself??

Local shop finally got two of these in, and I snapped a comparison to my Spider Tour. Pretty near a straight copy to my eyes.

I didn't roll them because they were too long for me, but they look nice in black.

That stripe is BOLD. From what I’ve read its almost got a pearlescent finish too, so even brighter in sunlight.

I’m not a big fan on alignment aids, but that seems pretty well done.

Maybe they listened to us! We who tested all loved the shaft tech, but said the insert was pretty bad.
