Exactly how comparable are the smell mtb x to the prov1? Should I spend my $40 on a 12 pack?

The Snell MTB-X and Snell MTB-Black are pretty comparable to Titleist offerings. If you're just wanting to try it and see what you think, go for it. If you want to stock up for next season, order 5 dozen and save some money in the long run.

I'll also just direct you to the 2019 ball test: https://mygolfspy.com/most-wanted-golf-ball/

I was a reviewer for the original Snell MTB, and again this year for the MTB-x.  The Snell balls are very similar to the ProV1 balls.  The Black is closer to the ProV1, the X is closer to the ProV1X.  If you want to try both, you can get a test pack with 6 of each, for just $33.  I'm a believer, I just ordered 5 dozen., for just $28 a dozen, delivered to my door.

Split my time this year between both the MTB Black and MTB-X. Love them both. To me the X is definitely firmer, a bit farther off driver and spins more around the green. The Black to me feels softer, spins more on full irons and is a little less responsive on short chips and pitches.

Your mileage may vary, of course, but they are great balls and worth trying out! I will be ordering five dozen MTB-X (in yellow) over the winter for next season.

Best way to find out is to order a dozen and try them.  I've been using them all season and some of last year.  I like the MTB-X for my game.

Just got through comparing the Bridgestone Tour B X to the Snell MTB-X (which I've played for the last 3-4 months).  With the drop in price of the Bridgestone balls, I figured I'd buy a dozen B X and play a couple rounds with them.  Here is my evaluation.

Driver - Distance wise, very close.  Feel wise, edge to MTB-X.  Does not feel as harsh off the driver.  Also seems to launch a little higher.

Irons - Edge to MTB-X for feel and distance.

Wedges - Edge to MTB-X for feel and launch angle.  Just seems to launch a little higher.  Both seem to check up about the same.

Putter - Pretty equal.  Like the feel of both.

I could play the B X, but my scores would probably be lower.  I'm back with the MTB-X and feel very good about my choice.

This is interesting to me, why do you think you'd score better with one or the other, when they're that similar?  In my opinion the golfer will adjust to just about any decent golf ball with very little impact on his scores.  When I made my choice for the MTB Black, it was mostly just personal preference.

Then why would you not play it?!

I think equipment wise - and my equipment specifically; there's not much if anything left on the table that will lower my scores. But if there were I'd have it in my bag before tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, lower scores all depend on me. The guy holding the club. Any equipment issues have already been eliminated.

Perhaps I'm not that good a golfer that I can play a different ball without suffering missed shots.  The area where I feel I would lose some strokes is chipping and pitching.  This is a very important part of my game  - the last round I had 6 up and downs - so if I don't feel that the ball will perform as I expect, then it will cost me shots.  I guess it comes down to a confidence thing.

I finally got my hands on the Snell MTB-X balls and played them exclusively the last week.  They are great in terms of ball flight and distance, very comparable to the Titliest and Srixon balls I usually play - my only complaint is that they weren't very durable.  I was getting 3 or 4 holes out of the balls before the covers tore or were scuffed enough that I didn't want to use them any longer.  I haven't had this type of problem with Srixon or Titliest.  So they are great balls in terms of performance, but given they weren't durable, I won't buy again.

Maybe it was just a bad batch?  I will say, I was totally impressed with the distance of the driver - they really flew well.  I thought maybe it was my wedge cutting them, so I swapped it out for a different one.  Didn't seem to make a difference.

I'm with a few of the others, I've never had durability issues with any of the Snell balls I've used, the original MTB, the Black or the X.  @Dg_sk, maybe you have really abrasive grass where you play.

I haven't - I guess I probably should.  It wasn't just one ball - it was all of them - the average time I could use one was about 4 holes.  Then they were either ripped, or scuffed so back it wasn't worth putting back in play.

And I'm not hitting old clubs or anything.  Cobra F9 Driver, Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons, and Wilson PMP Wedges that are less than a year old.  Nothing that's really worn out or "old".  I had an old Cleveland wedge that used to tear balls up - so my first thought was that it was the wedges - but I used my buddies Vokeys with the same result.

White or yellow? Compared to the MTB Blacks I've played in both white and yellow, the dozen or so MTB-Xs in yellow have seemed more likely to have some cover imperfections after a few holes. Didn't seem to effect them, however. I suppose everyone has a different tolerance level for that stuff, too.

If you go over in the official review thread I stuck some pictures of mine a month or two ago. Nothing serious in terms of cuts or deep scuffs, but definitely had some wear on the covers.

I have not played the white MTB-Xs, but I would say that is not normal based on how my yellow ones looked. I played one ball for nearly 90 holes that did not have as big of a cover mark as that.

Like @edingc, I tested the MTB-X, but I had white ones.  I never had any issues like that (aside from cart path damage), and I had a few that I kept for 36 holes or so before they managed to escape.  I really suggest you send a comment to them, along with a photo or two, and see what they say.

It doesn't matter which brand that ball would be, that type of durability would be unacceptable for me. Like others have stated contact Snell directly with photos. I have heard nothing but great things about the company and I am sure they would welcome the feedback etc.
