Tiger posted a blog post ahead of the President's Cup in December at Royal Melbourne where he signed off as Playing Captain of Team USA, indicating that he will be selecting himself as one of his four Captain's Picks.

I think it keeps the possibility open - if he plays well in Japan he picks himself, if not, not.

It’s the only way anyone watches the event.

What?  The team captain can also be a player?  Has that ever happened before - on either the US or Europe teams?  In any event, let's hope Team USA can get it done and avoid the sweep 😱.

Edit:  I now see Arnie was a playing captain in 1963 - the last time this happened.  Hmm, it would seem awkward IMO, but ultimately I want Team USA to win so, if that's truly his best option, go for it.

Hale Irwin was a playing captain in the 1st Presidents Cup in 1994.

Arnie was the playing captain in the 1963 Ryder Cup... also a first and last according to what I've found.

Yeah, I remember that.  Arnie was the last, but he was not the first. It occurred frequently in the '20's, 30's 40's and 50's.  Walter Hagen did it 5 times.

Interesting.  It seems to have fallen out of vogue however.  I wonder what the win/loss record has been in those instances... maybe it's our missing link 🙂.

It was just USA vs GB&I... no Europe. Europe was added in 1979.  Very lop sided.  Walter Hagen was captain of the first 6 Ryders and played in the first 5.

Hey, if it takes pretty much the rest of the world to beat team USA, I'm trash talking it 😆.
