New Clubs and Game Disappeared. What Gives?!

Anyone ever switch clubs and their game/ scores completely go down hill?

Was playing decent and making good progress on my game, worked from no handicap at all down to a 15. Consistently playing in the 80s and a bad day was going into mid 90s. Went to golf galaxy and got "fit" so I ditched my f7 one lengths and started using my new graphite shafted p790s. This was in March, now going on to the end of September, my game is completely gone. Off the tee and short game isnt any different, but from 200 and in, everything is trash. Now I dont know what to think.

My mind tells me to go to a real fitter and get a retro fit, but I really dont want to end up potentially paying for all new shafts and labor.

Anyone ever run into this before? Whatd you end up doing?

Well you made a huge change in not just the model of club, but obviously to your setup and swing as well with going from one length to standard.   In addition there has to be a huge SW difference between the one length and the graphite 790's.

It most likely is going to take a lot of range time to get comfortable with the drastic change.

Nailed it. Pretty much changed everything from club length, sw, the swing and feel

Wow I’m going to make it a trifecta here - you couldn’t have made a more radical change -

I will also answer your original question - yes - I was bitten by a fitter insisting that I would be better off with steel in my irons - I honestly still haven’t recovered from that move which was 7 years ago although there were other factors like health issues that impacted my game before I could get it back.

Ironically given that scenario you should consult a professional, yes - one length irons benefit a certain swing type you need to know if yours is it before proceeding -

Good luck

I assume you were hitting the ball better, with better numbers during the fitting?

If so then I would hesitate to suggest your game is just off just now.

No disrespect here but a high 80's early 90's swing suggests a visit to a coach first before another 'fitting' might have better rewards.

Agreed on the drastic change. It is a huge difference between what I was using and what I am using now. Thats where my biggest wonder is. On a well struck shot, I am hitting it higher than before which is what I like about that new irons but its far and few between with those. So constantly contemplating between going back to a steel shaft (lightweight) or even one length irons all together but would rather not. I play on some random trips I take and use rentals which are never one length.

As far the teacher vs fitter. I understand the gain I would get from a teacher and I have contemplated that a lot as well which I am still looking into but it comes at a high cost and a lot of time needed to really train your body with what you learn in the lesson. I'm not one that wants to play in some competitive tournaments. I enjoy the game and get out as often as I can and have shot into the 70's and mostly in the 80's which I am happy with. Above 90 was usually a bad day.

Teachers here in vegas are also so spreadout price wise. Some its like $75 an hour or some $150+ an hour and who knows what you're getting from the lower level.

With that additional info I’d say go back to the 1 lengths and enjoy the game. All of us play for fun and you were having fun before - fun comes to us differently, for some it’s winning the club or city championship for others it’s the joy of some laughs with friends.

It just sounds to me as if your current swing fits single length and they have to be a great conversation piece.

Put you old friends back in the bag and enjoy!

Unfortunately, I live in an apartment so theres not a lot of storage room so those were sold. Got a decent price for them too having probably 100+ rounds on them.

I of course would love to get better and hover around a 10 handicap or lower and I know theres a lot I can work on without lessons to do that. ( a lot to be improved on 80 yards and in with consistency of distance control)But I dont plan on being a club champion or anything like that.

I bought new clubs around July and my game too went in the tank. After consulting a few of the better players as to possible fixes, it all came down to hitting the range and just work on ball striking, don't worry about ball flight or where it's going, just work on ball striking. I did that and was still playing poorly in my opinion. After much research for an instructor within a few hours of my location I settled on one near by. This was the fix I needed. After watching me hit balls for a while she made some minor changes, all of which sounded reasonable to me at the time. Went to the range and worked hard on the changes. Well, much to my surprise the changes worked!!! Dropped 10 strokes, got me back to a 6 hdcp and working to get it even lower, well at least until winter hits!!!

For my 2 cents, get with an instructor you feel good with. I actually interviewed mine just to see  what her teaching philosophies were, her thoughts on teaching golf before I paid for a lesson. That is what helped my with the new clubs.

Good Luck.....Chris

I read an article recently over on WRX - I think by Adams. He was saying basically golf is played because it's Rewarding. Sure... it's fun and all that but Rewarding is the key for me. I hadn't really thought about golf or my game that way. Certainly not in a long time I suppose. But that's it. Think about it. Golf is Rewarding.

The fellow that started this topic does need an equipment change or some professional help I think.

I agree, but golf is rewarding in a lot of different ways. It isn't always about scoring low.

Very true. I certainly don't always. I recently had a rewarding first round after a complete failure on the front 9 during our club championship last weekend. I pulled it together on the back and finished respectable in spite of it all. Rewarding yes. Fun? Not so much - at least on the front.

I read that same article and was put off by it a bit. I can agree with this additional definition - BTW I’ve learned that people play golf for a wide variety of reasons from MGS forum members. I used to be all about shooting the lowest score possible and couldn’t understand why anyone would choose to do something that seemed contrary to that thought - refuse to take lessons, make equipment choices apart from professional advice, play a non tour level ball or a variety of balls, not practice regularly, all sorts of things not conducive to wringing out that last stroke.

For me golf is rewarding when I shoot a good score - but I see nothing wrong with someone playing golf because it’s plain old fun the way they are playing it - so long as they aren’t adversely impacting the people whom they are playing with.

... Getting fit is always a great tool but only a piece of the puzzle. Perfect example is I was at the PGA Show and really liked the new RBZ driver. But the Marketing Director had a fitting specialist work with me and the R1 was better in performance. Lower flight, less spin and more carry. To my eye the RBZ with a higher launch carried farther as well as looking better at address and producing a much better sound and feel. But the numbers said the R1 was longer by a few yards consistently and most importantly lower spin meant more roll and better performance in Chicagos' winds. Pretty much a no brainer.

... But on the course I struggled with direction control and it didn't take long for the look, sound and feel to make playing the club unpleasant. I stuck with it a full month then finally contacted Taylor Made and told the MD about my dilemma. He sent me an RBZ  and I instantly played much better and my confidence returned. I lost a little distance and when it was windy I had zero roll, but I was back in the fairway and enjoyed playing my driver again.

... Sometimes personal preference trumps ideal performance and if the One Length were more enjoyable and give you the confidence to play well, that is better than the P790's that regardless of how ell they perform on a LM just don't work for you on the course.

Appreciate it. I was going to go talk to a few people next week and see how I feel with them and go from there. I know either way where its this equipment or changing equipment, there are many improvements that can be made on my swing.

I love the look of the clubs and for the most part feel comfortable over the irons, Thats one thing I wish was more widely used is outdoor club fitting. Hard to find though.
