TaylorMade M2 2016 v's 2017- thoughts?

In my (never ending) quest to find a 'keeper' that inspires confidence on the tee, I'm looking at the TM M2 which seemed, and still seems, to get good reviews.

I tried a friends 2016 for a few holes once and enjoyed it- tried my pro's old 2017 and not so much, but he had a pro's expensive shaft in it.

Just looking for some views or feedback on anyone who's tried or used both, pro's and con's? before trying to find one in good condition.

Particularly keen to hear how the stock shafts that came with it perform if possible.

Thanks

Not used the M2 or M4 but have experience with the sister clubs M1 and M6.

I use to be a TM zealot ever since the R7. But I  had an M1 for 2 years with Stiff Fujikra shaft and it was the worse driver I ever had. It was more the consistency rather than anything else. Sure I could hit some great drives but the off centre ones would go nowhere.

Going back a couple of years I was fitted for a Callaway Epic ended up with a similar Fujikra shaft as the M1 and really happy. Tried fittings with the Epic Flash, M6 and Cobra F9 and this year and not getting much more out of them than the older Epic but again the M6 gave me the worse dispersion.

cheers Alf, so are you saying the Fujikura shaft is good but the M1 head was an issue?

Pretty much, the shaft in both was Fujikra pro 62. This was one of the stock shafts in 2016/17. I can't remember what the shaft was for the M6 but i was Stiff and light, did it at American Golf in Uphall, obviously didn't buy!.

Bit more data my swing speed is usually 95 to 105 and I tend to close the face a bit. On the Callaway I average about 240yds with a carry of 220.

There is no performance difference between the two in my time with both. I prefer the sound and look of the 2016 version over the 2017 one.

the 2016 is the one most people prefer and for many is still the best driver on the market

I played an m2 whilst on vacation. It was a solid stick. But, probably not quite as technical as the newer clubs. Yesterday I demo’ed a M6 and found it to be pretty good too, but not something that beat out my g400 LST.

Comparing m2, m6 against g400 lst is apples to oranges. M2/6 is going to Heber higher spin and higher launch than the lst.

someone looking for/needing launch and spin the 16 or 17 m2, m3, m6 are going to be good options and not much improvement between 16 m2 and m6 and imo m2 better than m3 or 6

The 2016 M2 in my opinion is the best driver Taylormade has made since it was released. I've never hit the 2017 M2, but people I know that have it, wish they had the 2016. I know many people like the M3-M6 range, but personally the ball does not go anywhere near as far off the face as the M2.

I also think that the 2016 M2 is the best looking Taylormade driver. I have the 2016 M2 3 Wood with the stock shaft, and it isn't leaving the bag anytime soon.

seems the overall opinion here and elsewhere is the 2016 M2 is the club to get, plus their stock shafts either Fujikura or Kuro Kage that came with it seem like a good match.

I'll try and get a hit with one (think a friend has a 2016) over the weekend and see how it goes. Thanks all for the input, much appreciated.

I have the 2016 M2 with a 60 gram stiff Fujikura shaft that I might be interested in selling if you decide on wanting one.
