I had my second lesson on Friday. I'm really enjoying working with my coach, it's been a lot of fun talking about different golf swings while also working to improve mine.

I'm now working on getting the backswing more vertical, with my left shoulder working more under my chin. The goal is to end up with higher hands that aren't quite as horizontally deep. As my coach pointed out, I tend to be "deep" from the ball in the 3D sense because my hands end up very far behind me. But from that position, I can't do much other than throw my right shoulder out and get steep into the ball.

He wants me to get more deep in the 2D sense, with the height of my hands increasing the distance the club head is from the ball. From this more vertical position I can better rotate my right shoulder around my spine in the downswing and attack the ball on a shallower plane. I'm getting this height by setting my hands much earlier and then rotating to the top. My swing feels very similar to the Faldo drill at the moment.

The change was pretty noticeable on the range today. The butt of the club at the top of my swing is more over my trail foot/heel than before the takeaway change. Additionally, I picked up about a half club to club of distance by coming in slightly shallower. I still have a long ways to go and I made some ugly swings today, but I'm making positive progress.

snapshot_20200101_154552.thumb.jpg.83bfaa858660ae6ae2f5fef6a7969c9c.jpgI constantly need to remind myself to stay mentally focused. I have a goal (and not just for golf) for 2020, stolen from a word my instructor uses a lot.

Kaizen. A Japanese concept of improvement or continuous improvement. It's something I'd like to focus on moving forward.

I hit a couple more buckets of balls at the range today, for a total of six buckets since my last lesson. Additionally, I was able to play nine holes last week when Michigan had its warm spell. The changes to my takeaway are getting more ingrained, the last two range sessions have been really good for that, and I shot a 41 during my round, which is one of the best nine hole rounds I posted all season. I am hitting the center of the face far more often because I'm no longer swaying off the ball in my backswing.

However, today I really struggled with hitting a high ball, pulls, etc. despite hitting the center of the club face. Unfortunately, it wasn't until I watched video from after the session that I realized my club face is starting to work really open on the backswing now. In my quest to get more up with my right arm, my right hand grip weakened and I had to manipulate the hands a ton on the way down.

My point in discussing all of this is that I had a frustrating session today. However, I'm still making progress and need to be thankful for that. I'm much happier with where my hands are at the top of the backswing, and I'm sure I'll get the grip sorted out next time I'm at the range again.

My hope is to take at least one lesson in January. I have also restarted SuperSpeed training, where I'm seeing speeds at or above where I stopped in the summer. I have two more weeks of Fit For Golf's offseason program, and then will be starting a heavier lifting routine combined with stretching from the FFG routine.

It's shaping up to be a productive offseason, and I hope to be playing my best golf ever right out of the gate this upcoming spring.

Well hells bells, The Grint now has me at 13.4 so I guess they've recalculated and removed the x .96 multiplier. I sure haven't gotten better since my last round.

I have another lesson scheduled for this week. I'm excited to get back in the hitting bay and hopefully on Trackman to see any progress I've made. I've been to the range four times since my last lesson and the top of my backswing is looking a lot better than where I started the offseason in November. I'm still struggling a bit with an open face, I'm hoping my coach can get that straightened out. When I briefly had everything working for one session in late December I was very happy with my distance and ball flight, just need that consistency now.

On a different note, I posted over here that I picked up some weights for my Spider Tour:

The weights came in Friday. First of all, I wish TaylorMade sold official 14 gram weights. The threads on these aftermarket weights are a little long, so the weights wouldn't tighten down full inside of the head. I had to wrap a thin strip of painter's tape around the base of the weight to get them to seat tightly and not rattle. But they still stick out a little - I'm just imagining they are little rocket boosters or something of the sort...

IMG_12012020_180920_(800_x_1067_pixel).jpg.75bd1d9eaf58333fa5ae7c1b028e7cb4.jpg

IMG_12012020_180936_(800_x_600_pixel).jpg.f01d3798664ecfbd8f3ffc20ee90159b.jpg

The extra weight is awesome. I got a chance to hit a bunch of putts on the indoor practice green at the golf shop today and am floored at how much better my distance control and tempo is with the heavier head. Additionally, I set up a bunch of 6-9 footers and sank a ton. I know there will be some adjustment in the spring as most of the courses here have very slow greens compared to my BirdieBall and the golf shop, but I really believe I will be a much better putter this upcoming year.

Grip continues to feel more natural. Hit quite a few balls again today and feel like I'm making more and more progress each time out.
The downside of the new grip is that I've yet to develop calluses in the right spots. I have quite the raw, bloody spot on my right ring finger as a result.
Today, I focused on getting some more hip hinge at address. I noticed after my gapping session last weekend that I tend to be very upright at address, especially with longer clubs. Adding a bit of hip hinge seems to help me rotate a bit better and stay shallower on the downswing.
Couple other things that I need to work on - making a full turn and not rushing the downswing and good hand path on the backswing. As the clubs get longer I have a tendency to abbreviate my backswing. And I still fight coming too far inside on the backswing. Both flaws seem to end with an over-the-top move combo'ed with a fat strike.
Really loving the swing I put on the gap wedge in the below video. Close observers will also notice some new Puma Ignite spikes with the DISC laceless system. Awesome, awesome, awesome feeling shoes. The laceless system is so comfortable, even right out of the box.

Swings looking nice a neutral there. Smooth and balanced too!

Thanks, guys. I'm really happy with my decision to take a few lessons. I was on the right track but having someone else take a look has helped a lot.

Still a ways to go, but I'll keep grinding.

Dropping an updated 9-iron down-the-line video from today's range session. Swing Caddie claims 147 carry on 84 MPH swing speed. Feeling pretty good after today's session heading into tomorrow's lesson.

  • 3 weeks later...

I haven't updated this thread recently. January was a big wash for golf improvement, for the most part. I had a lesson mid-month, and we spent it correcting some inside takeaway problems I was having. I left the lesson feeling pretty good, but because of bad weather here in Michigan, I didn't get a chance to go to the range to practice until almost 10 days later. Unfortunately, I had a pretty miserable range session that was a step back in progress.

To make matters worse, most of the month was spent dealing with injuries. I finished the 12-week Fit for Golf offseason program just after the new year, and was feeling pretty good! But a week later, I misstepped at the gym coming off a plyometric box and majorly sprained my ankle. It has now been a full three weeks since that injury and the ankle is only starting to feel near 100 percent. Toss in a handful of other injuries - gashing my palm while cooking, straining my hamstring doing squats, etc. - and January was a frustrating month.

My coach and I were able to diagnose what went wrong during my range session through some texts and screenshots of my videos. I was standing too close to the ball and crowding my hands back into my body. I had to roll my arms open to avoid my right leg as I swung back.

We're being graced with beautiful 45 degree weather today, and I was finally able to get back to the range. Even broke a sweat! I had been practicing my grip, alignment, setup and posture over the past two weeks to make sure my hands were hanging freely under my chin and not too far back between my legs. Today's session was much better!

I received my new FlightScope Mevo and am very happy with my purchase. The video auto-clipping feature is great, the stats corroborate what I was getting from my Swing Caddie SC200, and I love that it uses a rechargeable battery. Numbers-wise, it might over report club head speed slightly, but everything else seems about right!

I still had a lot of inconsistency, and struggled today hitting a bit off the toe, but I'm happy to say I feel like I was able to implement some of what we worked on in my last lesson. I mashed up some numbers from the MyFlightscope web interface (such a nice feature) and the averages look pretty good.

On the topic of club head speed, I am working back through SuperSpeed protocols, and I've started heavier compound lifting (squats, bench, deadlift) alongside the flexibility work in the FFG offseason routine. I topped 100 MPH a few times with my 4 hybrid today, so all of the speed work is paying off in combination with the lessons.

I will probably try to get one more range session in before taking another lesson later this month. At this point, my plan is work with my coach at least once a month this season. The outdoor range near my work will hopefully be open by end of March, and that means I will be able to practice a lot more than what I'm doing now.

Thanks! Because of my lessons and swing changes, I'm gaining the confidence to go at it hard with my swings. They have made a big difference. FFG, lifting and SuperSpeed are all helping, too.

I do know the Mevo over reports club head speed slightly, but I had seen 100+ a few times with my Swing Caddie in December, also. Since the Mevo has historical data, it's cool to look back a see an average ball speed of 136 MPH over 34 swings. That's probably more telling and accurate than the club head speed - and indicates there's still some room for ball striking improvement.

Ball speed is king.

Yes you have to have the CHS to get ball speed but it's all about getting that CHS transferred to the ball.

136 with hybrid @ 100 MPH is 1.36 smash. Probably a little low on average for that length of club, so you are probably correct in over reporting of CHS.

Good stuff, keep it up!

Means a lot. Thanks!

One nice side effect of all of this work on my swing is that I'm taking better care of myself, as well. I've been on a solid gym schedule since October now, and that's huge for me. Down at least seven pounds from where I was last summer, and my lifts keep going up.

  • 2 weeks later...

Lesson No. 4 for the winter went into the books on Friday. After spending much of the past two lessons and months of practice working on fixing my inside takeaway, I ended up actually overdoing it a bit and had to work a bit more inside. So between the grip change from lesson one, and the takeaway work from lessons two and three, I've made two very positive changes to my swing this offseason.

A quick and easy change from Friday's lesson was narrowing my stance a bit. I was getting way too wide (well beyond hip width) even with my shorter clubs.

Next up is the transition. My tendency is to rip my left hip and shoulders open to start the downswing, which results in an out-to-in path. On camera, the swing hasn't looked too bad because it's not an obvious over-the-top move, but it shows up at impact with my right arm over my left and after impact with my hands and arms working hard left and low as they exit. If my timing is off, this results in some really poor contact, or as has happened lately, a lot of shots off the toe as my shoulders and hips pull my arms across away from the ball.

My instructor has given me a new swing thought of having my hands work down and behind me at the start of the transition. This in effect causes me to squat slightly and bump my pressure into the front of my left foot to start the downswing. This ends up shallowing the shaft quite a bit and moves the path more in-to-out. In doing half swing drills in my garage yesterday, I also realized this was the spot for @PMookie's swing thought of "knuckles down at impact." As a former baseball player, controlling the knuckles seems to resonate well with me.

I setup my range bay today with a gentle reminder about club path.

IMG_16022020_175440_(800_x_600_pixel).jpg.3f4ed57ec9b99a0e912b71b8c08e31e2.jpg

Today's range session went pretty well, much more centered face contact, no bad pulls and generally really good distance/ball speed considering I was not going 100 percent at every swing. Couple frames I'm very happy with:

snapshot_20200216_173801.thumb.jpg.13ba6ed702f9362868c8f1030f11642b.jpg

Getting the takeaway to be on plane and not inside is resulting in my hands being stacked over my right ankle/leg at the top of the swing. At the beginning of the winter, my hands were well behind me. Having the intent of letting the hands fall back and "knuckles down" has helped lay the shaft off and keep my left wrist much flatter than it had been working toward over the past two months. Club face is looking better as a result.

snapshot_20200216_173912.thumb.jpg.e72e59e5ddde5d59ca0d7fc7c4931127.jpg

At impact my right arm is below the left arm (and this angle, which is slightly too right, isn't helping perspective any).

I had set an alignment stick about 10 yards in front of me in the snow, with the goal to start balls to the right of it. Here's a video of my 4 hybrid literally clipping the stick as it went by. A decent swing, and good distance (206 carry on 134.1 MPH ball speed). Wish the Mevo recorded sound!

Updating the title of this thread to reflect 2020 season starting!

West Michigan is blessing us with a taste of spring a little earlier than usual, and I was able to get out for my first 18 holes Sunday morning.

I've spent most of the winter working on full swing irons and putting, so predictably those were my strengths. My driver and short game were expectedly inconsistent, but showed some really positive flashes.

THE GOOD

  • Fairways were really firm/frozen, which I was able to use to my advantage. Recorded three drives of 275 or more total yards.
  • Took 31 putts. I only hit three greens, which meant I was chipping a lot, but 31 putts is good for me given my past record. Looking back, this was my second best putts per hole performance when including all of my tracked rounds from last year.
  • Chipped-in to save par, hit the cup with a short chip on the following hole and then hit the flagstick on the next hole. Three back-to-back good chips.
  • Struck my irons pretty well for the first 14 holes or so.

THE BAD

  • Score was ruined by three blow up holes. I will not score well when I record two triple bogeys and a quadruple bogey.
  • Driver was wickedly inconsistent, and it is the cause of my bad holes. I snap-hooked two balls out-of-bounds on back-to-back holes, and hit another three or four balls left into the trees on other holes.
  • Mentally, I was not prepared for 18 holes. Somewhere around hole 14, I started to get mentally tired and I blame that for some of my bad shots.

Moving forward, I need to work on getting into a better pre-shot routine that covers my grip, alignment setup and posture, and also on maintaining my focus for every shot. For example, yesterday I had to execute a "simple" chip from behind a tree back to the fairway. My concentration lapsed some, I chili-dipped the chip, and left myself in a bad position to attack the green.

Last technical thought for now: I need to continue my work on getting my stance a bit more narrow. I got a little too wide toward the end of the round and started to get stuck on my back leg, which led to toey-hooks with the longer clubs.

My best hole was a birdie on No. 10. 272-yard drive to right in front of the green, a 10-yard chip with my 60 degree to 18 inches and resulting tap-in.

I have 36 holes under my belt already this season, and my winter of work has shown some promising early results out on the course. As I mentioned on the first page, one of my goals for 2020 was to be both longer and more accurate off the tee. So far, I feel like I'm on the right track.

image.thumb.png.416ed3fdefaf4b971375607728fbe840.png

I'm hitting just under 50 percent of fairways with my driver, but around 55 percent when irons/hybrids are factored in.

I need to get rid of my left miss now, but I think more practice time will help with that. I only swung my driver twice from the end of October until March 1, so applying my new swing to that club is going to take a while before I get it right.

From the swings you have posted I envision your handicap going as the same way as the stock market is currently. Your positions are great. Just takes getting out on the course regularly to fine tune them!

It feels very surreal to be reading my posts from a month ago talking about being on a golf course given the current situation. Hard to believe I hit two range buckets the morning of March 15, which now feels like an eternity ago.

I’ve been trying to control what I can, which isn’t much. In regards to my golf game, that means I’m currently spending a lot of time chipping and pitching in my backyard, occasionally rolling a few putts on my Birdieball remnant and continuing to work with my SuperSpeed sticks and home gym.

I’m doubting the courses here in Michigan will get the go ahead to open before May, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see closures stretch even further into the summer.

I’ve never been much of a lifter, having occasionally dabbled with Stronglifts 5x5 and a few other 5x5 based programs. This time around, I’ve been following Greg Nuckols’ 28 Programs plan, which is freely available online. The program is setup quite differently from any straight linear progression programs I’ve done before, and I’m seeing good success squatting and bench pressing three times a week, while deadlifting every other workout. My 1RMs have gone up at least 20 pounds in both squat and bench press since I started around Christmas, and my working weights have increased even more significantly for those lifts.

One thing I haven’t been as good at is keeping up with the mobility work from the Fit For Golf routine I followed over the winter, and that’s one of my immediate goals to improve upon.

I know what you mean about it feeling like it's been an eternity since being able to get out on the course.  I played in a tournament on 3/15, and was schedule to play in another one the following weekend, but the season has been cancelled until 5/15.  They closed all courses in NM until at least 4/30, but I drove by one yesterday that was all locked up (you couldn't even drive into the parking lot), but low and behold there were a couple of guys wearing masks teeing off on #4.

You're game is looking much improved from the beginning of '19, keep it up!  Looking forward to reading more about your progress this year.  Also, thanks for the info on the Greg Nuckols' 28 Programs.

  • 4 weeks later...

Michigan opened up golf courses just about a week and a half ago. I played last Tuesday and had a rough go of it, but still saw some some glimpses of what could be, shooting a 42 on the back nine after a 50 on the front. I hope that kind of Jekyll-and-Hyde performance isn't becoming the norm - the last round before quarantine (at the same course) I followed an opening 53 with a 41.

It has been extremely hard taking my lessons to the course without having the ability to practice. Given the weather we've had this spring, I would have hit a couple thousand balls by now on the outdoor range, but I've instead been relegated to short pitches in the backyard. Admittedly, my short game during my last round was way better than it has been in a long while, as I pitched in for birdie from about 18 yards out and left another pitch inches away from another birdie.

(Of course, given the state of the pandemic, safety is my utmost concern. But the inability to practice frankly sucks.)

Anything longer than my wedges is causing me fits right now, but after some reflection and going over old lesson video, I found some focus points for my next round. First, my grip started to weaken again. It was still stronger than where I finished last year, but too weak based on my work over the winter. Second, I fell into the habit of having very open shoulders at address, which did all kinds of nasty things to my club path. These problems led to my good shots being cuts, and my bad shots being very high weak fades. I'm working on a pre-shot routine that fixes my grip and alignment, and plan to give it a try during my next round.

I have a tee time this week at one of my favorite courses. It isn't the longest course in the area, but it requires accuracy and has much more sand and water than most of the other courses I play. If I can get some consistency in my long game, I should be OK. I'm hoping that my home course will be open for the season soon so I can get my membership and get going on more regular play.

Following up on a previous post, I completed another round of Greg Nuckols' 28 programs. My one-rep maxes are now as follows:

Squat - 220
Bench Press - 155
Deadlift - 250

I unfortunately do not have a spotter at home, or else I may have been able to push myself a little bit further on squats and bench. But I'm still ecstatic with my progress since December nonetheless.

Hey, good for you! Consistency this early in the season is so hard, not to mention at Gracewil. Lies can really be a game of roulette, even in the fairway. Hopefully getting to some better courses helps you out.

And good for you on those lifts!! Even if we can't get the same swings in as usual, being stronger and more fit than otherwise will definitely payoff. I definitely sympathize with the lifting without a spotter, especially when you're trying to get some heavy weight up.

Western officially opened for the season today, so I'll have to get over there to check out the improvements he made this offseason. There will supposedly be better drainage thanks to a ton of new tile, and more trees have been taken out to help the grass some. I actually think Gracewil is a nice little course but can commiserate about the sketchy lies. It's relatively open compared to parts of Western, but it makes up for it with the greens that undulate a lot more. It's just a shame that a good chunk of the course is so wet all year long. I know it was a heck of a workout to walk 18 last week with all of the hills.

I cut this past round of Nuckols' program about a week short and just did my 1RM tests yesterday. Because I'm so much more active with the weather getting better (garden, mowing lawn, house work, etc.), I've just been way too wiped to do that, lift, SuperSpeed and want to play golf. I started to up my food intake to help a bit with the increased expenditure (or at least, that's what I'm telling myself about my quarantine snacking...), but need to cool that really quickly unless I really want to gain 20 pounds in six months 🤣. Only so much of that is muscle...

Yeah, totally agree with you on Gracewil. It's a bummer it's not nicer though, it's like a 7 minute drive for me haha. And I didn't realize Western was making all those improvements, that should be sweet!

And nah, I'm sure it's all muscle😉 I'm trying to stay out of the Clydesdale division, but I don't love my chances...

  • 2 weeks later...

Had my first lesson since February today. Couple of key takeaways for me -

  • Grip had gotten too weak again.
  • Need to stand further from the ball. I tend to get my hands really tight into my body which causes path issues.
  • Continue to work on getting the club face more closed at the top/impact.

My instructor had me do a modified Flamingo drill where my right foot is pulled way back while I'm swinging. He also had me stand extremely far (for me) away from the ball, so that I feel like I'm reaching with my arms just slightly. His words:

Quote

Right foot back so you can't spin, more space at address. Feel club face more closed, and then the club goes down and out to the right.

Toward the end of the lesson I started hitting some really nice tight draws again with my 7-iron, and my driver was getting better as well. Still needs work but it's something to work off of. I played nine holes immediately following my lesson. In retrospect I should have just hit a bucket of balls, but I did see some promising things during my round.

When everything is working, I can put some zip on the ball and that's really good to see. I had my Mevo running for the last few 7 irons just for fun:

Additionally, I smoked a 5 iron for a total of 228 yards (carry+roll) with a little wind help off the tee during my round. Trying to look at these types of shots as my ultimate goals and seeing a few good shots here and there helps with my confidence.

I purchased my yearly membership today, and weather permitting, should be playing at least twice a week through the rest of the season at this point.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been able to play quite a bit over the past 10 days, playing six 18-hole rounds and one nine-hole round. All in all, I've played pretty well considering it is still fairly early in the season and that I've had exactly one range session since it stopped snowing.

I had a goal of hitting a single digit handicap this season, but at the moment it is trending in the wrong direction. While I've put together some really impressive strings of holes (including scores of 38 and 39 on the front and back nines at my home course), overall I haven't put together a really low (for me) round yet, hanging out in the 83-86 range when I play OK and into the 90s when I'm playing poorly. As a result of playing more, I've bumped a bunch of my lower rounds from last season out of my calculation now, so my estimated WHS handicap has risen from 10-something to 13.3 at the moment.

It's a little disheartening to move in the wrong direction, but I'm trying to take the positives away from each of my rounds. My ball striking has improved a lot since last year, but I'm still prone to losing strokes with some awful shots - tops, shanks, chunks. And with those in the back of my mind I haven't really been able to cut loose too often. Flashes of speed and distance are there, but right now I'm definitely giving up a club or more of distance just by playing a little too tightly.

My goal for June is to work on going after shots a bit more, and trying to play with a bit more confidence and freedom in my swing.
