If you do a face-on video while using the Down Under Board, do you see more head stability?

I've been trying to have that feel on the downswing, but haven't put the board between my feet in a while. Hard to explain feels, but I think I'm going to need to "recalibrate" my feelings of where my head is on the downswing by just committing to several buckets of mostly half swings. I don't feel like my head is moving forward, and if I get the right movement in my swing (either in a mirror or during a lesson with a pool noodle against my head), I feel like I am falling backward. Because it's so uncomfortable for me I am struggling to implement it.

Good video, thanks. Yes, the goal isn't to necessarily eliminate head movement but get my upper/lower body a little more disassociated in transition, and get my left hip to clear a little more so that I'm posted up, so to speak.

Mostly because I'm curious and also need some more upper/lower body dissociation in transition, do you feel like there's any mobility limitations holding you back? Or is it mostly just a weird movement to get used to?

I'm generally not super flexible, but can't figure out if it's holding me back from making a good move or not.

I think for me it's just a weird movement. I have zero issues making that move in the mirror or at slow speed. I've been pitching balls in the backyard and seem to be able to do it there as well.

Part of the issue is that it: 1) Doesn't feel as powerful as throwing the upper body toward the target (obviously not true) 2) When my lower body gets in the right position my brain interprets it as my upper body falling backward (also, not true)

I think a few buckets of some half swings working up to a full swing about every third swing will help. I'm guilty of taking full cuts for an entire bucket, even when I'm working on something.

OK, I'm going to do something risky and pretend I know something about the golf swing 🙂

A couple years back, I sent a video of Kirke's swing to Adam Young to see if there was anything there that I should keep an eye or or channel in a different direction. He sent back about a 20 minute analysis of Kirke's swing with suggested drills and such (this is a service he offers on his website).

One thing he commented on was Kirke's head movement backward as he approaches impact (on a face on view). He compared it to Nicklaus and Tiger, who have the same movement. I see above in this thread you highlight it with Rory.

Quick turn into the golf swing weeds: swing positions are dynamic rather than static. Adam makes this observation regularly: on video, the losing tug-of-war team is moving forward, while all their forces are moving backward. That tug-of-war phenomenon exists in the golf swing, especially as the club accelerates into impact.

Adam's observation about Kirke (and other swings) is that the head moving away from the target is essentially a reaction to the speed going through impact. It's like a counterweight.

think this is relevant to why it is not hard to get your head in this position in slower swings: it isn't about making the movement with the head (if I'm on the right track). But it would be like me reproducing the look of a losing tug-of-war team by picking up a rope and slowly stepping forward. On video, the look might be right, but I'm actually doing the wrong thing entirely in terms of reproducing the forces.

You could think of it this way: the pivot point of the swing needs to be in the chest, so that the head can function as a counterweight. I don't think I want to try to get my head in a place: I want to be pivoting so hard around my upper chest (the top of the triangle of my arms) that my head is thrown backward.

I did one experimental swing with this. I don't get a lot of face-on video of myself, but I'm pretty sure on this point, you and I suffer from the same malady. I know I tend to sway forward in my swing and dump the club behind me. This was my first try changing my thought to what I described above (think of it, for instance, like an Olympic hammer throw):

(High tech video editing using text to make a line next to my head).

Obviously, my own swing ain't perfect, but I was amazed at how quickly the "head moving away from the ball through impact" showed up with this thought.

Please take this advice for everything it's worth, which is exactly what you paid for it 🙂

This is spot on. (And I greatly appreciate the thoughtful response.)

I've been grasping for different feels as to how to accomplish this feat, which feels nearly impossible at the moment. The ones that are just feelings about the head not moving tend to result in poor swings. Sure, my head doesn't move much, but in accomplishing that I have to do all sorts of compensations like leaning backward and throwing out my rear hip. As you alluded to, I'm not counterbalancing myself in these cases, I'm fixing the center of my movement on my head.

In no particular order, some different feels I've tried so far that have had times of success:

  • The "cast" portion of the "No Turn, Cast" drill.
  • Replacing my left shoulder on the top of the backswing with my right shoulder on the downswing.
  • Feeling like my hips and chest are matched up at impact (taken from this AMG video).
  • Right shoulder down-and-out (versus out-and-down).
  • Throwing the club (a la your mentioned hammer throw...)
  • Rotating around my shirt tag or the base of my neck.
  • Back to target longer. (Gets me rotating my upper body instead of shifting forward.)
  • Hands starting the downswing.  (This is the one that my coach keeps re-iterating to me and tends to have the most success - albeit still inconsistently.)

You highlight an important point, and one that's unclear in my own critique: my head movement is a symptom of another swing ailment and not the ailment in itself.

  • 1 month later...

I'm still on a bit of a high from my personal best 75 on Saturday. I've been thinking about why I shot so well. Lessons and practice have been a tremendous help in improving my game over the past 18 months. However, one thing I realized is that for the first time ever, I am completely happy with every single club in my bag. (Though I'll continue to reserve the right to experiment... 🙂.)

For as long as I've played my home course, there have been a handful of holes where I just didn't have the right club choice from the tee. That is no longer the case. A lot of the winter was spent reworking my bag to get rid of single-use/limited-use clubs, and my work has paid off. I hit driver on eight holes. I hit iron on the three par threes and on one dogleg par four, so that leaves me with six holes that get split between my Super Hybrid and Epic Flash hybrid. They fill the slots of a traditional 3-wood and 5-wood, respectively. I was never one to hit fairways well, and so by going with hybrids I've really upped the versatility of those slots in the bag. I use the Super Hybrid on holes where adding the risk of driver isn't worth it, and the Epic Flash gets used on two holes where the Super Hybrid would otherwise reach trouble.

I'm still an equipment junkie, so I have my eyes on a few things (Apex 21 hybrid, Epic Speed driver) as potential upgrades to my bag.

I've gotten some good swing thoughts/feels going in the past week as well. On the range I tend to be a swing thoughts/feel practice player. On course I will rehearse a thought during a practice swing before focusing on my shot and target.  Mostly for my reference, they are as follows:

  • Make sure grip/alignment/posture is good. Pressure in balls of feet (I get toward toes otherwise). With longer clubs I need to feel shoulders more closed and feet more open. By default I want to setup with my shoulders open and my feet closed. Make sure my grip is erring on the side of strong.
  • Right pocket back to start the backswing to get a better hip turn and not a sway. I need to maintain my height when doing this and not dip my head down.
  • Right arm over left on the backswing to keep the club coming too far inside. Better hip rotation from above also helps. Previously, I'd compensate for poor hip rotation/sway by dragging the club inside.
  • To aid in completing a "full" backswing, feel like my right tricep is at least parallel to the ground at the top. I have been trying to lengthen my backswing forever and this feel gets me closer to where I'd like to be.
  • Hands start the downswing, while my belt buckle stays behind the ball. This thought alone has made a huge difference in helping to keep from spinning out my shoulders and hips to start the downswing.
  • Knuckles down at impact, especially with the driver. Because of the way I setup and grip the driver (with the shaft leaning backward), I need to feel knuckles down at impact to get the faced squared up better. Otherwise I tend to hit a lot of open-face, high and right fades.

Thanks! I've got a lot of room for improvement in my nutrition and workout regimen. With summer coming, I get really busy between golf, garden, lawn care, etc. Last year, I stopped working out from April-October and lost a lot of my progress. My goal for this summer is to maintain so I can hop back into gaining mode come fall/winter. I'm definitely starting to hit the point where physical/strength limitations are holding me back from adding more speed.

I have not followed the work in progress as close as some but the bits I have seen you could tell it was just going to pay off for you and look at this!

On the equipment realm, I know you play your home course ALOT but are you confident in the clubs you have in your bag that if you go play another course that you could hit every shot needed for that one? I am pretty sure I know the answer but was just curious your thought process on something that is outside your home course.

The top of my bag would most likely change if I played a course with more tightly mown fairways, or a course that was more open and exposed to wind. I'm currently not setup for low, penetrating shots from the tee.

I'd likely loft the Epic Flash hybrid up to stock or maybe to 22 degrees, and then drop the 4 iron for my Cobra Utility on those types of courses. That would give me a shot to combat wind.

This is a great update and you have some great improvements, that have obviously been well earned with all the work you put in. I like the way you use the feel thoughts as that is the main way I work on practice is getting a feeling that seems to work. Keep up the hard work and the scores will come as well all know, but sometimes can easily forget myself included.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just ticked over the 10 round mark for the season this week. Weather is starting to finally warm up for good, and real summer will be here soon!

I've been having some big issues getting Arccos working properly with my Android this season, but there's enough data in there to be reasonably accurate by this point:

arccos_20210520.png.b31a0b0804d19b183d01dd5802f574c1.png

Couple of things stand out to me in my quest to get into the solid single digits (currently, holding on by a thread):

  1. I need to eliminate "big" misses off the tee. I can handle a slight pull or even a big fade most of the time. I can't hit duck hooks and massive blocks. Also cannot top it off the tee box about 40 yards in front of me like I did this morning 😂.
  2. I still three-putt too often. A lot of that is being too far away from the hole with my first putt due to iffy approaches/short game. I can live with a 40 foot putt from 150 yards away, but pitching from <25 yards shouldn't also result in 40 foot putts.

Overall, I've become a much, much better putter and my chipping has improved a lot as well. I also have added a bit of distance with my driver and although it can be cranky at times, I'm hitting it better than I ever have.

I didn't feel like I played very well Tuesday or this morning and still walked away with an 80 and 82. To be solid single digits I need to be putting up 80s or better most of the time at my home course. I also have a 75 (new personal best) and a 78 under my belt so far this season.

So far, the only equipment change on my horizon are my grips. Sadly, the larger butt diameter of the MMT shafts paired with the Lamkin Sonar Tours is resulting my grips being about +2 wraps, or +3 on the wedges. I've been struggling to get my grip feeling good and I think the additional size may be the reason. I'm going to experiment a little with some undersized grips to see if that helps them feel better in my hands.

I brought my GoPro out with me last Saturday morning to record my nine hole round. It was very cold, unfortunately, and I didn't have a great day. But I captured the first three holes and cut it together into something I'm calling "Trifecta." Hopefully I can do a few more of these throughout the year. I'm not Erik Anders Lang, but it's fun cutting this together with a bit of commentary.

That video is awesome. Great quality great sound and love the commentary of plan of attack. Will look out for these!

The course looks good, the swing is looking smooth, and the framing of the shots on 10 and 11 looks gorgeous! That par 3 would give me nightmares with the way the trees frame the hole. Thank you for sharing that, it was awesome!

10-11-12 is the worst three hole stretch on the course for me! They all have my number... I have only once or twice in three years even been close to a birdie on No. 11, and No. 12 is just suffocating when you look at the green from the tee box. They actually took about 15 trees down over the past couple of years to open the hole up a bit more but it still is tight. The green is pretty deep and runs faster than others on the course, and there's a big grass bunker on the right that will swallow up anything left over there.

The way your swing is looking, I believe you can conquer that stretch. I love the quality of video from your GoPro and the commentary you gave on how you were approaching each shot.

@edingcyou really need to bring your talents to courses and say “I’ll do full review docuseries on your course if I get free golf.” I look up courses on YouTube that I haven’t played all the time to see if there is stuff like this on there and are typically piss poor quality. That GoPro is legit @B.Bostonwe need to go halfsies

I can say, for a fact, you wouldn't regret it. I love my GoPro and have been meaning to get it out on the course more often. Having my swing on there might make it not suitable for public consumption, though.

You all are way too kind. I'm glad you liked the video. I bought the GoPro and a cheap Amazon USB-C stand microphone with this in mind, and I'll definitely be sure to get some more footage. It serves multiple purposes for me - not only do I get to go back and watch some of my rounds to evaluate myself, there's a bit of pressure when I'm on camera and I'm trying to develop myself more so that when I'm having a good round going or playing in a tournament (may never happen) I am used to it.

I think you'll find the quality to be even better in more light. This was pretty early Saturday and with the cloud cover the shooting conditions weren't great. I think you could get away with an older GoPro to save a bit of cash - I have the Hero8 Black but only shoot in 1080p Linear so that I don't get the fish eye distortion of the higher resolutions.

Yo that was awesome can’t wait for episode 2 .. next forget the 4h and grip it and rip it

You're not wrong on No. 10. There is such a small window of unobstructed second shots from the fairway anyway (overhanging tree limbs), it probably makes more sense to try to hit past them. Last summer I played with @ncwoz and he ended up hole high to the right behind the trees and I still think that's the ideal miss and a better play than going short.

No. 11 leaves you no choice. The trees on the right are too tall to go over, and I can't hit a big cut on command. In that treeline on the right there is the remnants of a rather large bunker. I assume when the course was built in the 1960s longer hitters could go over the trees and the bunker helped to make that a more risky play.

I was kidding on the grip it and rip it part... I actually am more of a playing is smart on the course guy.. and hindsight is 2020 since you already hooked the first two tee shots its easy for me to say use driver when what you did is prob the smartest play. 11 is def a layup hole and 10 looks super tight so I would of prob did the same use a wood if hybrid
