Some spots the trees are just flat out dead like 11, but 10 I've found myself right a ton and seem to mostly luck out and still have a decent look at the green. It's tough too when the conservative play is still super super tight, then I end up 150 yards away in the middle of trees instead of 50 yards haha. From a DECADE perspective, I'd have to imagine a lot of these holes are the ones Scott would kinda throw his hands up and say there's not a clear winner.

You're correct. I've found that erring on the side of more aggressive is usually the better play. Even if you end up in the trees, you can likely get back out, chip up and make bogey at worst. I played conservatively almost all of last year and while it's fine when you hit the fairway, I'm pretty likely to mishit an iron as much as the driver.

No. 13 is a good example. Even though you can lay back and still have a wedge into the green (generally OK by DECADE standards), the "good" landing area is so much wider with driver.

Love the video. It's one of my favorite formats for watching golf on YouTube: shots with after-the-round voice over. Erik Anders Lang has mastered it, and I've enjoyed with Kyle Berkshire has released videos like this (more than when he's narrating during the round). It's such a chill and relaxed way to watch, even when the shots don't go as planned. Hoping for more of these from you.

I still have been very hit or miss over the past two weeks - shooting an even par 72 but following it up with a +20 and +19 effort before having a nice round of 81 at a more difficult course on Memorial Day. My driver has been a mess. I have a lesson in a couple of weeks and hope to get that sorted out.

I had my first lesson since April yesterday. I've been playing pretty good golf score-wise, but had been struggling a lot off the tee in recent weeks. In the four rounds prior to my lesson I lost a total of 10 strokes just to penalties off the tee. 

Overall, my coach is really pleased with my progress. At this point it's just a bunch of small changes each time I have a lesson. It seems to take me about three lessons to get things cemented into my on course swing, so I've been happy to see some of the progress I've made on areas where we've worked on in the past.

Couple of frames from my lesson video to note:

At setup I need to feel a little more stretched out with my arms. It's only a small change on video, but to me it feels like I'm reaching a long way to the ball now. Ball position had worked a little too forward as well. And, although we didn't talk about this during the lesson, I had recently been getting too into my toes at setup as well so this is me feeling pressure more over my shoe laces than in the front of my feet.

The big "change" from the lesson is just to turn more. I've been working on this since last fall but had fallen back into the bad habit of having a very short and abbreviated backswing. Simply feeling more turn made a huge difference. I'm going to need to practice this very mindfully because it's an uncomfortable position for me to be in even though I hit great shots that fly further with the extra turn.

Impact doesn't look all that different yet. Backswing turn is the No. 1 priority for me to improve, No. 2 is to let my back stay to target a bit longer and not rip my shoulders open so quickly. 

Exit position was definitely better though.

I think I've taken about 10 or 11 lessons since the fall of 2019. I'm very happy with the return on my investment. For just slightly more than the cost of a new driver I think I've made a ton of progress.

Couple other things to note: 

I had gotten too outside on the takeaway so we worked all lesson using the "Faldo drill" to get my backswing back on track (this was my takeaway when I started my lesson):

I really hadn't noticed this until watching the video, but I'm pleased with my physical conditioning. I can visibly see a difference from last summer to now. I've been walking at least 12-15 miles per week just with golf alone, push mow the lawn and still have been lifting lighter weights a few times a week. Also, my eating habits have been better as well. Just need to keep it up!

Great progress and no wonder you're shooting so well this Spring!  I have a habit of not turning as much once I'm on the course.  I blame it on being right eye dominant and golfing righty, but its more likely that I feel the need to dial it back.

You're making me think taking a lesson or two would be worthwhile! haha

Man you are really making progress.

Would you say your improvement is the result of slow and steady gains, or can you trace things back to a particular breakthrough or "a ha" moment that opened the gates for you?

I understand the "dialing it back" feeling. I notice it a lot on par fives when I'm laying up. I always make sure to club down a bit because when I take the "you can't hit trouble with this club" swing (i.e. nice, long and relaxed), I always hit it way further than I think I can. I had one today on No. 9 where I thought a 9 iron couldn't possibly reach trouble and ended up with a 170+ shot leaving me nothing but a flop shot over a tree and bunker to the green. (In fairness, I was in the rough and might have caught a flier).

If you can find the right instructor for you, I think it can be worth it. I'm lucky to have found one that I get along with well, is located at my practice facility and doesn't charge too much. That being said, I'm not paying his listed rate. I also get to practice a lot due to my work circumstances.

I joked with him yesterday that I should just pay him a retainer because I spent weeks trying to fix my backswing turn/hips/takeaway and after about 15 minutes with him I was hitting the ball so much better.

There have been several incremental "a ha" moments since I started playing golf somewhat seriously in 2019:

• Getting into a set of more modern clubs that were better fit for me was huge. I had a set of Nike CCIs from like 2003 and an Adams SpeedLine Super LS driver before I joined MGS in 2018. Neither were fit for me, and I realize now that they were not very forgiving for my handicap/skill level at the time. (At that point I was somewhere around 25-30 I think - I'd shoot 100+ on a standard course like where I play now). This last change to the MMTs and Sub70s has been wonderful as well. The heads suit my eye really well and dispersion with the MMTs is noticeably better than my C-Taper Lites.
• Playing more golf and practicing more often certainly has helped - kind of an incremental "a ha" just because you realize why pros play practice rounds/hit so many range balls and you can leverage your way around a golf course just with experience even if you don't hit very good shots. That's how I got to shooting a 79 in 2019 before I ever took lessons with a short, choppy, over-the-top swing.
• Lessons have led to a few incremental moments: 1) Changing my grip to neutral/slightly strong in my first lesson immediately got me hitting draws. 2) Fixing my takeaway from being too inside got me hitting my longer clubs better and added more distance. 3) This last hip thing sure feels like it's going to be huge. All in all, I'm more consistent because of lessons and can trust a shot pattern for the most part (driver and Super Hybrid are excluded here at the moment, unfortunately).
• I got started on DECADE-ish strategy with a free webinar at the beginning of last summer put on by @edteergolf. The webinar introduced me to the idea of shot cones/shotgun patterns, reasonable expectations and the concept of using Google Earth Pro to lay out courses. In the beginning I got too conservative, but now I'm learning how to better attack courses just from the satellite maps.
• This year my short game and putting have been much better. Although we haven't really worked on anything but full swing in lessons, some of the changes I've made in my full swing have carried over nicely. Also, I purchased Gareth Raflewski's videos and they helped a lot as well. I've been better on the greens for two reasons: 1) The EXPUTT 2) The L.A.B. Both have helped my speed control tremendously. I've always been adept at reading greens, but speed was my enemy. That is no longer the case.

It is crazy to think I've gone from somewhere around that 25-30 handicap mark down to where I am since spring 2019. Honestly, it's so hard to change old technique/habits that I probably would have been better off not having any idea of how to swing a club to start!

One thing I always forget to factor in when laying up is the fact that an iron does not react the same way landing on the green as it does landing in the fairway. I try to add 10 yards but way too many times does it still go to far. Not because it flew too far but because it flew the distance that I was looking but then it bounced and rolled.

Hey Cody, I'm assuming the right side pictures are the new, or "after" pictures?  

When I was on the range yesterday, I'm not sure why I thought about doing this, but I started feeling like I was standing up a little higher at address, kind of how it looks like you are in your address picture to the right.  I seemed to make some pretty solid contact when doing that, so maybe there's something there.

I have a tendency to crowd the ball. I definitely hit the ball better when I'm setup like on the right!

Nothing too much new to report, other than the acquisition of a Mevo+ for winter work. Looks like I might be forced to take about a week off of outside practice and play due to the massive amounts of rain in the forecast.

I shot a 73 the day after my last lesson that I posted about on here, and since then have been pretty consistently in the upper 70s-low 80s. That's a lot of progress and I'm happy with that. More importantly, I'm having a ton fun playing golf right now. It's still a grind at times trying to improve, but I'm beginning to see myself hit better shots more often. Scores don't always follow, but I'm finally moving forward in the right direction.

My tee game still continues to be my biggest weakness, and that's solely because of penalties off the tee:

I grabbed three more holes worth of footage during yesterday morning's round. No shot tracers this time around, it seems they "fixed" the app and it's no longer working for free... bummer!

End of July check-in. I just hit the 50 round mark on the season, plus a handful of trips to the course where I played less than nine holes as practice time. I've hit a nice little stride over my last 10-20 rounds (here's the last 10 compared to the 5 handicap baseline in Arccos):

Driver continues to be the weakest part of my game, but it has come around lately. After messing with the AutoFlex for a month and relegating it to the bench, I ended up purchasing an Epic Max LS head that is working wonderfully with the AF. I've hit some absolute bombs with the combo, but maybe more importantly I've found a bit of a fairway finding low drive that carries maybe 240 but can be hit with relative consistency. My goal is leverage that kind of shot when I'm on the outskirts of my home course where I can hit the ball out of bounds. One-and-a-half strokes of the -1.9 driving strokes gained are due to penalties from the tee box, and if I can eliminate those it would be huge for my game.

I've been hitting my irons beautifully for the past two weeks focusing on the feeling of keeping my lead shoulder in longer on the downswing. Combined with a focus on grip, alignment and posture I've never hit the ball better.

My unofficial handicap is now at 8.2. I've come to the realization that to get much lower than that there is almost no room for any mistakes in my short game. I have had several opportunities from within 75 yards that end up short of the green due to chunking my pitch shots. At this point, I just need to spend an afternoon in the short game area to build up some confidence.

I was finally able to get another lesson in this morning - my first lesson since early June. I have been working diligently on getting more hip turn in my backswing over the past few months. 

The good news is that my backswing is much improved. But now my focus has to shift to correcting an underplane iron swing and overplane driver swing. My iron swing has developed a large "drop under" move, which results in the club moving too in-to-out. This leads to thin shots, blocks and hooks. I worked today on feeling my hands move more left and down, which helped steepen my downswing a little bit. There is still a lot of work to be done.

My coach has me placing a range basket slightly in front and just a bit right of the ball to help cement the idea that I need to be exiting more left.

You can see on the right I was successful in getting my hands moving a bit more to the left on this swing, which results in less clubhead rotation through the swing (i.e. less timing of the hands).

With driver, I actually need to do the opposite. I need to feel like I'm much flatter coming back and swing out more to the right. My coach said this is atypical. He usually sees iron swings too steep and driver too flat. I made a few changes with the feeling like I was coming back very flat and around. This actually resulted in a near perfect look at the top:

Working on getting flatter dramatically improved my launch conditions. I typically hit a high slight fade, but I started to hit piercing draws/straight balls with the changes. It also improved my speed. I still need to work on this more, but I did have my Mevo+ going and the early results were promising:

I have a week left in the main part of my season and will then drop down to playing much more infrequently. But I'm excited to get back out on the range to work on these things. I love seeing progress; it's such a great motivator.

The Labor Day holiday pretty much marks the end of my main golf season. I will continue to play at least once a week as long as the weather cooperates, but I'm moving into offseason mode in my training and practice.

As in past years, one of my offseason goals is to continue to get in better shape. I have been working with my Rypstick and also with one of the Rypstick trainers to develop an offseason plan. My hope is to shed a few pounds and add some weight to my max lifts. Between working out and the Rypstick, I want to develop more club head speed.

I got out on the range today to get a general baseline of where I am currently at throughout the bag. I didn't hit every club, but hit the following with my Mevo+ running:

• Driver
• 5 Iron
• 7 Iron
• 9 Iron
• Gap Wedge (50 degrees)

After lightly warming up, I hit seven balls with each club (eight with driver). I removed outliers and took averages from the Mevo+ software. I did not remove any balls from the 7 iron, 9 iron or gap wedge. I removed one smother hook from the 5 iron and removed four balls from the driver that the Mevo+ registered as 5,000-6,000 RPM spin. 

I hit fairly poor quality range balls. My experience with the Mevo+ and range balls is shorter clubs tend to spin less than normal (therefore recording longer carry distances), mid irons are pretty accurate and the driver can be a mixed bag of both. Club head speeds are also a little variable depending on the club and distance from the radar. I'm usually looking at ball speeds and general shot shape.

My honest assessment tells me these carry numbers are a little too high, though I was swinging well today (but slower than Saturday when I had my lesson and did my Rypstick workout before hitting balls).

I will need to repeat this test throughout the winter and next spring to see if I've made any progress.

My home course has closed for the season, rain is in the forecast nearly every day, and that pretty much means I've completed 99 percent of my season.

Although I didn't think it would happen, 2021 eclipsed my 2020 round totals:

• 87 times out to the course, consisting of:
  • 51 18-hole rounds
  • 24 9-hole rounds
  • 4 18-hole scramble events
  • 1 9-hole personal scramble
  • 7 practice outings

I ended up being able to play four times a week during the meat of the season, which is responsible for the increase in total outings. Another big thanks to my wife who continues to encourage/put up with my hobby, and who even tagged along for the practice rounds and played a few holes when the weather was nice in June and July. 

My only regret about the year is that I did not play away from my home course as often as I had originally planned. But, with rising costs of gas and rounds, it didn't make much sense for me to stray away from my already paid membership. I am thankful I was able to get out with @ncwoz last weekend to enjoy one of my favorites in the area, however, and we had great weather to do so.

Now, for my goal set back in February a few pages ago:

It's been a very rewarding year of golf for me, and unfortunately (as usual) I head into the off season feeling like I'm hitting my stride and have some good potential. Last weekend I managed a solid round from the tips at a 73/137 course with four penalties. If I can get myself avoiding those penalties, I would scare 80 from 6,700-6,800 yards. That's a load of progress.

Been a busy fall already and haven't been as active around here as I'd like, but have some more stuff to put together in this thread over the next few weeks.
