Those rounds include a new career low of even par 72, 73 and 75 twice.

Swing looks great Cody! Regardless of you not making your goal of "most of the time" in the 70's having these three rounds show you are making very good progress. Still don't understand how you can go 5+ months of not playing but can't wait to see you crush all your goals next season.

My practice facility officially closed for the season this week. I ended up getting one really good range session in last Monday, but from now until March I'm officially without an outdoor practice space. That leads me to this post detailing my plans for my offseason.

We are working on re-organizing our spare bedroom and the EXPUTT will be back in my practice rotation within the next week or so. The EXPUTT led to a big improvement in my putting confidence this year, and I'm looking forward to getting back to practicing a few days a week. I find committing 15 minutes a few nights each week isn't too hard at all.

As I've posted around here, I purchased a Mevo+ in early summer with the intent of creating a practice space in my garage. I also have a 4'x4' mat, a Fiberbuilt Flight Deck and a 10x10x10 cage net currently sitting in packaging. Over the next two weeks I'm going to work on building a support system in my garage rafters so that I can hit balls throughout the winter.

The last two winters I visited the heated range about once per week as the weather allowed. Last winter this worked out well, the previous winter I went weeks between sessions due to poor road conditions. The heated range is almost 45 minutes away, which meant two range buckets and drive time took about three hours of my weekend. Needless to say, I'm beyond excited to have a hitting space at home.

I'm about a week into another go at a 5x5 linear progression program. I've bounced around programs the last two winters. Linear progression tends to wipe me out, but I'm committed to eating enough to hopefully see more success than I've had in the past. After playing with @ncwoz a few weeks ago, I realized I need to get stronger. I know I've pretty much maxed out the gains to be had with just overspeed training.

I'm lucky to have a gym at work. I'll work in some light cardio and medicine ball work at lunch a few days per week. Lifting three days per week, and hopefully hitting balls two days a week.

Top 3 Best/Favorite Holes of 2021

One of my favorite things to do each year is to pick my favorite holes from the season. As I've added more rounds each year I've done this, it has become a lot harder!

#3 - Birdie, Oct. 9, Hole No. 8, Diamond Springs Golf Course

I got to play with @ncwoz at one of my favorite courses I've ever been on. The fairway on this par 5 is massive, so standing on the tee I just told myself to let loose and accelerate through the ball. I ended up lacing my 5 iron shot into the back bunker behind the green, but hit my best sand shot of the season. The ball splashed out and ran down the sloped green to about five feet. I hit the birdie putt.

ds_hole.jpg.b33497aafb8cd5aa86ae7eb25317d0d5.jpg

#2 - Driving the Green, Sept. 18, Hole No. 13, Western Greens Country Club

The Arccos image is actually from the week before when I came up just short of the green. Unfortunately, the day I did this Arcoss was not working correctly. I absolutely middled one, and combined with my Rypstick work that I did at the end of the season, I successfully drove over the green for the first time in my life. I figure it was close to 320 yards, on a slightly wet and flat hole. (Image for proof!)

drovegreen.jpg.771b13d6ba2ee72ee373b8b9065ce57f.jpg

#1 - Eagle from the fairway, July 15, Hole No. 16, Western Greens Country Club

Long story short - I hit a bad drive that got knocked down by trees a long ways from the green. I hit a knockdown 6 iron up a hill to a blind green. When I got up to the green I found my ball in the hole! This may be even better than getting a hole in one. The eagle also saved my round and led to a solid 78.

So far, this offseason is shaping up very differently from last. I've quickly settled into a nice workout routine, and this time I'm trying my best to keep my diet in check so that I can hit my goals.

The last two offseasons I've been stuck in a bad loop. After the 2019 season, I hit the gym pretty hard with light weights and explosive exercises up until Christmas. Combined with not eating a lot, I actually dropped down to the lowest weight I've been in my adult life, around 157 pounds at 5'11".

Black Friday 2019 saw me get a full squat cage in my basement, but I kind of half-heartedly committed to lifting until COVID lockdowns hit in mid-March. I didn't eat enough to support my goals, and I didn't push myself very hard. I made some progress though. Last offseason I again didn't eat enough to support my goals and didn't push myself very hard. I had gained some noticeable muscle mass, but really poor eating/drinking during summer 2020 ended up with me being about 25 pounds heavier than the Christmas prior and not a lot of strength to show for it.

I bought the Rypstick this year, but after 3+ seasons of speed training, it's more for speed maintaining than anything else.

This offseason I've committed to doing a 5x5 program with good results so far. And, most importantly, I'm eating enough to support my goals, hopefully. Once I get my indoor setup finished in my garage, my offseason programming should look like the following:

  • Sunday - 5x5 Routine
  • Monday - Couch-to-5k Running session, Medicine Ball and Explosive Work
  • Tuesday - 5x5 Routine
  • Wednesday - Couch-to-5k Running session, Medicine Ball and Explosive Work, Indoor Range Session + Rypstick
  • Thursday - 5x5 Routine
  • Friday - Couch-to-5k Running session, Medicine Ball and Explosive Work
  • Saturday - Indoor Range Session + Rypstick

I know from previous experience with the WHOOP band and now with my Garmin watch that I burn roughly 2,500 calories a day. My dinner is typically small (some sort of protein and vegetable), shooting for around 800 calories total. On lifting days I'm shooting for close to 3,000 calories, on cardio days closer to 2,000. With those goals I'm hoping to have enough energy intake to actually gain this time around and hit some new personal bests.

I have been eating roughly the same thing every day with exception to dinner to facilitate this:

Lifting Days

  • 8 oz hard cheese
  • 8 oz salami
  • 1.5 oz peanut butter

That yields just around 2,000 calories for non-dinner food, leaving me some wiggle room on dinner/drinks or whatever.

Cronometer.jpg.f0aac8179df06969ec092657c7c1f920.jpg

Cardio Days

  • 24 oz Daisy brand Cottage Cheese
  • Quest Cookies and Cream Bar
  • 1.5 oz peanut butter

That yields around 1,100 calories, which again, leaves some wiggle room for dinner/drinks.

crono2.jpg.d99d0297e9aae4694fdc7edb8227dc7f.jpg

Three weeks in, so far, so good. I've held right around 180 pounds throughout, plus or minus 2-3 pounds of water fluctuation. My lifts are going up and my last two range sessions have shown promising results with ball speeds.

  • 2 weeks later...

First offseason lesson of the year at lunch today. Overall, things look really positive.

I did not play or practice much from early October to last week. After getting my hitting area in my garage setup last weekend, I'm now going to be able to practice a bit more. Honestly, I feel a bit refreshed and ready to go after the break.

With the layoff a couple things had started to slip - my grip had gotten too weak again, but I had compensated for that with a really strong bowing of the lead wrist on the downswing. Not a bad move, but my face control was terrible because of the constant hand manipulation. I also started to slide forward on the downswing again. My angle of attack was pretty steep even with long irons and I had to flip a bit at the ball to get it in the air.

We strengthened up my left hand grip and worked on a drill where I made half swings with a 9 iron, but with my right hand only touching the grip with my palm and not using my fingers. This forced me to feel my right hand driving the club through the hitting zone. By the end of the lesson I moved back to full swings and had some really solid results.

drill.jpg.bab15791f3b26a724a0cc835d8332dfc.jpg

I went through the head moving forward/body slide stage last year as well, and it's a tough habit to break. I'm thankful I now have a practice space at home where balls are unlimited and free! Results are fantastic when I get it right. My last swing of the day was an easy 5 iron, not full swing but just smooth.

5iron.jpg.e36aeb4fb089c5ec61d50db6eeec6fdf.jpg

I cut together a crude swing sequence of what my coach said was the best swing of the day. It's a huge improvement from where I was in mid-summer.

Dang, looking awesome!!

Is your garage setup something you've gotta put up and tear down each time you use it, or do you have the space dedicated?

Thanks! I didn't show the 7-8 shots that I shanked! 😂 But it was a good lesson for sure.

I'm lucky to have a pretty big garage, so I have a semi-permanent net setup. I built three wood "clamps" that go around my rafters and are secured with 10" carriage bolts. I didn't want to screw into the rafters and the spacing wasnt conducive to supporting the net anyway.

IMG_19112021_053628_(1280_x_960_pixel).jpg.565e431bc6f05f64ba66f69731023cd9.jpg

That gives me an 8'x8' mounting area to hang the net off of. I bought a 10'x10'x10' cage net and just let it have a little slack. The panels facing the two walls in the corner are secured with bungee balls and are "permanent." I have a hook on the side of the support where my car parks, so I just need to use a step stool to put up that corner of the net before hitting. The corners are secured with sandbags filled with pea gravel.

The whole setup takes about 5-7 minutes to put up or take down.

So far it has worked wonderfully. I have enough room for 13' of ball flight with the Mevo+ so I can do regular indoor mode rather than short indoor.

The only downside is I don't have a way to do a face on camera view as I'm quite close to my back wall. Left-handers would likely not be able to use my net as configured, either.

Are you wanting to run that much for overall health or are you looking for it to translate to your golf game?

Overall I know you’re very intentional and methodical about your training, but (my two cents) I’m a little concerned you’re not programming enough rest.  Do you really feel you can go all out and push yourself in your weight training if you’re continuously running that much every week?

Love the practice area, I had to do something similar after moving this year to a snow zone.

But on the topic of running, it made me think of this old article :

Yeah, the running is more of just something to do at lunchtime a few days a week. I'd do something more low impact but I absolutely hate cardio machines. The only thing it does do is help keep me in better shape for walking 5+ mile 18 hole rounds 3-4 days a week in the summer. In fact, I can say with certainly all of the walking from this past summer really improved my fitness as jogging hasn't really been all that tough to transition to.

I'm definitely at my upper limits and need to watch that. I may just switch M/W/F to a warm-up lap or two (it's a 1/9th mile track), and then move to mobility work for the remainder of the time. I was doing well with my weightlifting, and had reached my previous personal bests in almost everything, but two weeks ago I tweaked what I believe to be the sartorius muscle in my right leg by pushing too far in a stretch. So it's been only light movements of the lower body trying to rehab that - of course, I'm still swinging a club without pain thankfully.

Realistically, besides general health, the ultimately measurement of progress is club/ball speed, which does seem to be trending slightly in the right direction. I'm still dealing with adjusting to swinging indoors somewhat, but my top end ball speeds with my 7 iron have been slowly inching toward my target goal of 130 MPH. Though I'm still a bit away from that being my "normal."

I appreciate the feedback! I know there's a bit too much programmed here to make huge gains in any one area, and it's good to have some checks-and-balances on that.

I'm very jealous of your GC3, though I've been surprised at how well the Mevo+ has adapted to being indoors. I did end up stopping by Home Depot yesterday and picked up a Mr. Heater propane heater with built-in fan and a carbon monoxide detector. It was 36 degrees while I was hitting yesterday, but with the heater blowing in my direction it was very comfortable once I got past the initial 10-20 warm up swings.

I remember watching the Tiger "documentary" that was on HBO this past year and they specifically talked about his SEAL training stuff and running in combat boots. Safe to say he was definitely overtraining. I don't love running, but it's just something to kill 30 minutes at lunch three days a week.

Sure, I'm not saying some cardio isn't a good idea, but it just seems like you're not resting enough and so, from my vantage point, the running would be the first thing to scale back.  Here's a TPI article discussing the questionable applicability of endurance training to golf:

It's time for an end of the year progress update post.

Per @Getoffmylawn's thoughts on my previous update, during the last month I dropped the jogging and replaced it with some sprinting to warm up, before doing some explosive medicine ball exercises from Fit for Golf and stretching/mobility work three days a week. While I've continued to lift, my leg is still not 100 percent and it has hindered my progress in squats and deadlifts. My bench press and rows have improved.

I was a little scared to get on the scale this morning after the holidays. While I didn't eat awfully, I didn't eat well, either. I was very relieved to see I've still within the same +/- 2 pounds of 180. I do hope to clean that up a bit heading into the new year.

I have pretty much cut out the Rypstick training, instead opting to hit more balls during my training sessions in the garage. It's not that I don't like the Rypstick, but given my limited time availability in the garage, it's a necessary casualty.

Overall, I'm pleased with the progress I am making. I am a little disappointed with my progress with squats and deadlifts, specifically, but I'd rather let the leg heal and not risk messing with my actual golf season.

I debated about getting another lesson before the new year, but I've been making pretty good progress on my own the last few weeks. I plan to get another in January to check in and get me through to spring.

I'm beginning to see a lot better dispersion in my shot patterns, which tells me I'm making progress. For example, here are nine shots from this morning with my 7 iron:

FlightScope_Golf_Session_-_MyFlightScope.jpg.b2a903bc3ce97acec4899919425b29c6.jpg

Over those nine shots I averaged 95.9 MPH club speed (0.8 MPH deviation) and 131.5 MPH ball speed (2 MPH deviation). I have slowly seen increased ball speeds as the winter has progressed.

With all that being said, I did an impromptu gapping chart based on my Mevo+ data. These are all off-the-deck, full swing yardages pretty much in the center of the dispersion pattern, and I'm happy to see I have pretty good spacing throughout the bag. There's definitely some compression between the longer irons and the utility, but they do serve different purposes. It will be interesting to see how these compare to my numbers when I can actually get outside again in the spring:

  • 2 Hybrid @ 16 Degrees - 237 yards
  • 4 Hybrid @ 20 Degrees - 225 yards
  • 4 Utility @ 21.5 Degrees - 210 yards
  • 5 Iron - ??? (Haven't hit it yet this offseason, still waiting on a shaft extension...)
  • 6 Iron - 200 yards
  • 7 Iron - 189 yards
  • 8 Iron - 176 yards
  • 9 Iron - 161 yards
  • PW - 147 yards
  • GW - 137 yards
  • 54 - 124 yards
  • 58 - 112 yards

Nope. You were 100 percent correct about overtraining. I hadn't yet reached the heaviest weights yet. Now that I'm working closer to my 1RMs, I can't overdo the cardio. Plus, I like the explosiveness of the sprints. More athletic movement than jogging.

The Labor Day holiday pretty much marks the end of my main golf season. I will continue to play at least once a week as long as the weather cooperates, but I'm moving into offseason mode in my training and practice.

As in past years, one of my offseason goals is to continue to get in better shape. I have been working with my Rypstick and also with one of the Rypstick trainers to develop an offseason plan. My hope is to shed a few pounds and add some weight to my max lifts. Between working out and the Rypstick, I want to develop more club head speed.

I got out on the range today to get a general baseline of where I am currently at throughout the bag. I didn't hit every club, but hit the following with my Mevo+ running:

  • Driver
  • 5 Iron
  • 7 Iron
  • 9 Iron
  • Gap Wedge (50 degrees)

After lightly warming up, I hit seven balls with each club (eight with driver). I removed outliers and took averages from the Mevo+ software. I did not remove any balls from the 7 iron, 9 iron or gap wedge. I removed one smother hook from the 5 iron and removed four balls from the driver that the Mevo+ registered as 5,000-6,000 RPM spin.

image.png.e10feadde0f77e11d5ad83ca9e01bf27.png

I hit fairly poor quality range balls. My experience with the Mevo+ and range balls is shorter clubs tend to spin less than normal (therefore recording longer carry distances), mid irons are pretty accurate and the driver can be a mixed bag of both. Club head speeds are also a little variable depending on the club and distance from the radar. I'm usually looking at ball speeds and general shot shape.

My honest assessment tells me these carry numbers are a little too high, though I was swinging well today (but slower than Saturday when I had my lesson and did my Rypstick workout before hitting balls).

I will need to repeat this test throughout the winter and next spring to see if I've made any progress.

FSGolf_Shared_Shot.jpg.385fee896564b8d9ac8caf6ebcd01508.jpg

Revisited this chart/test last night, hitting 10 balls each with the gap wedge, 9 iron, 7 iron and 5 iron. This is not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison as my outdoor testing used range balls, while I was using ProV1x RCTs last night indoors.

Very happy to see ball speeds up across the board. Launch and peak height have also come up some in the longer clubs. I've been playing with ball position in relation to my shoulders and moving the ball back closer to my swing low point has flatted out my AoA slightly and increased the launch on those shots.

I did not hit driver. I have found the accuracy of the Mevo+ indoors with driver to be lacking somewhat and didn't bother.

I would say they are between the two designations. The 7 iron is 31 degrees, pitching wedge is 45.

In my mind, for a 7 iron, I'd consider 32 degrees to be "modern standard," 34 to be "traditional" and 29 or less to be "strong." On the flip side, for a pitching wedge 46 degrees seems to be the weakest around these days. So 45 isn't much off that.

You've hit on something I've been contemplating lately, whether or not I'd benefit from moving to a more "traditional" or weaker lofted set of irons at some point. For now I'm content (famous last words...).

The answer is always new equipment!  🤣

My sticks are about the same as yours, and I agree...a 45 PW has become the "new traditional" and 46 is probably considered weak in this day and age.  (Right or wrong who cares...Dear God I hope this doesn't open your thread to a loft-jacking debate.)

It looks like you're still getting enough spin, but I would agree that you are probably in a place where you really don't want to hit your clubs any farther than you are.  (I'm assuming you're comfortable with your gapping and distances in all your wedges.)

It is! If all factors stay the same, I am leaning toward going for a full bag fitting sometime around the start of July. I have been eyeing some of the more traditionally lofted sets (Hogan PTx Pros, Callaway Apex Pros, Titleist T100s).

My biggest issue is that I'm still able to hit a toe shot with the best of them. I currently like the Sub70s because I lose maybe 10 yards on mishits. But you are correct that I really don't need to hit my irons any longer. While my gapping is OK all the way through my bag, I so rarely have shots of anything longer than 175-180 yards at most courses I play.

I had my second lesson of the offseason Friday morning. Still working on a lot of the same things, but I feel like I'm in a really good spot with my swing.

Keeping things simple, my homework is to feel more of a “reverse C” in my finish. The result of such a feel is that my lead hip bumps a little toward the target to start the downswing while my upper body stays back, which gets my hips rotating less and the face less shut coming into impact.

Couple other minor thoughts are to continue to feel space in my setup (really feeling like I have outstretched arms) and to stop bowing my wrist/holding my wrist angles on the downswing. I had started to excessively bow my wrist in my downswing which also was not helping with my overly shut club face.

Before we started the lesson, I warmed up with a few 8 irons and was happy to see 91+ MPH on the Trackman on some less than stellar swings. I don’t have 100 percent trust in my Mevo+ with club speed so having validation of some decent club head speed was nice to see.

I’ve included some screenshots to show the small differences in my finish positions (and they don't really do enough to show the differences in feel) and then a pretty good example swing from some garage practice Friday after my lesson.

Hah. It's one of the things I hate about my swing. Not sure when I started doing it but it's totally unconscious at this point.

  • 4 weeks later...

Close-to-monthly update. Starting to see brief hope spring is around the corner with nearly 40 degree temperatures a few days this week. It's going to be bitter cold this weekend, unfortunately, but the long-term forecast looks promising. The last two years I've played in early March, and based on my first round last year I'm less than 35 days away from potentially getting out on a course again.

Things that have not received as much attention as they should:

  • Putting - While I've gotten the EXPUTT out a handful of times, I just haven't committed to rolling a lot of putts this offseason. I did have a few "ah-ha!" moments when I did practice, mostly related to keeping my lower body steady, and hopefully those will translate to the course.
  • Wedge matrix - I've really struggled the few times I've tried to put together a wedge matrix. Everything seems to go the same distance! I know it's technique, and it's something I should really get a lesson on at some point.
  • Driver - Haven't really been wanting to hit driver in the garage, and the few times I did I was not impressed with the Mevo+'s readings. I'm sure it's a combination of technique and possibly inaccuracy past a certain ball speed on indoor mode.
  • Speed training - I cut the Rypstick out very early in the offseason and need to pick that back up. I'm hoping to squeeze out another few MPH throughout the bag this season.

Things that have been progressing well:

  • Full swing practice - I've had my bouts of poor swings all winter, but things really have progressed nicely since my last lesson. I did a quick iron/hybrid gapping session last night and hit some fantastic shots, including three dead center off-the-deck 4 hybrids that felt awesome. Success in my swing is basically boiling down to good setup (for me, it feels outstretched and with high-ish hands, upright chest and some hip bend) and then making a good full turn with my left side. The only other thought/feel I've had is to remain tension free in my hands and wrists. When I get "tight" in my wrists, I tend to bow on the downswing and hit the ball left.
  • Fitness and diet - I'm still working my way through William Wayland's "Big Hitters Manual" and have thoroughly enjoyed the programming. I hit a new PB on bench press the other day, and loaded up 255 on deadlift with no issue. My legs haven't made as much progress as my upper body due to the muscle strain from early November that is still lingering, but I'm not too far from some of the goals I set at the beginning of the offseason. Diet-wise I'm stuck right around 180 pounds, which is good considering my lifts have gone up consistently. I'd really like to get down to 165 this year, but with golf season around the corner that may not be a possibility as my eating tends to pick up during the season as I walk a lot more.
  • Speed - I mentioned above that I cut out Rypstick but the weightlifting and just generally swinging faster has led to significant speed gains. Looking back on my first offseason range session, I've picked up a little speed across the board, and some major gains in ball speeds. Last night's three hybrid shots were a great example with club speeds recorded at 103+ each time, and ball speeds of 153+ each time.

I purchased the Mevo+ Pro Package and have been enjoying the additional club data it provides. I can't wait to get it outside on the actual range this summer.

Cody, without giving away the farm can you describe the program from the Wayland manual?  Is there much in the way of sprinting, jumps, med ball work?  The description online seems to focus on mass and strength, but I don’t see a lot of power/speed/explosiveness discussed.

One of the major issues I struggle with is that I seemingly adjust my speed to be about the same so that 1/2, 3/4 and full wedges all overlap within a single club more than they should. I really just need to go out and commit to figuring it out. It's one of those things where I didn't have a lot of success early on and just dropped it.

I would say the Big Hitters Program definitely focuses a lot more on mass and strength than some. There is medicine ball work, cable work and jumping, and I've been adding in sprints here and there. I personally feel like it's been the perfect balance between the main compound lifts and the explosive accessories. There are a lot of variations to the big three, with split squats, trap bar deadlifts and varying pushes and pulls (pulls ups, rows, reverse flies, incline, decline, etc.).

Certainly nothing earth shattering for those that have been programming their own stuff, but a good program overall. As you probably know, I suffer from f---around-itis so having the program has been helpful for me to stay on track.

Plan is to run it until end of April, switch to Fit for Golf's in season program for the golf season, move to a pure Starting Strength/Stronglifts from October to December and then probably back to the Big Hitters program by 2023. Subject to change, of course!

As a big advocate of clock/fractional wedges, a big thing that helps me is to focus on having a consistent rhythm for all partial wedge shots. I believe that the second book in the Tour Tempo series makes the case that for partial swings (and putting), tempo moves more toward a 2:1 ratio (as opposed to the "ideal" 3:1 ratio on full swings).

For me, I tend to just count "1—2" on the backswing/downswing of partial wedges. If I can maintain the same tempo on each swing, and if I have to cover different distances with my club (1/4 vs 3/4, for instance), my speed has to be the variable, which is the goal.

Might work for you, might not 🙂

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm hopeful this is my final winter update before I can actually get outside on the range and course. I was able to chip and pitch quite a bit in my backyard over the past two weeks. Once this current line of snow subsides I'm convinced we've turned the corner into spring.

I had what will be my last offseason lesson today, and it was very promising. I've been hitting the ball pretty well recently, but suffering from an overdraw/hook. My right hand was turning over too much through impact and shutting down the face. To correct, it only took a feeling like I was hitting more of a cut. It boils down to me feeling my right shoulder stay higher with an open face as the club exits left.

I didn't warm up much, but since it was such a minor change my instructor had me try to ramp up the speed today. It was awesome to confirm the numbers I've been seeing recently on the Mevo+ at home carried over to the Trackman. I saw a couple 8 irons at 94+ MPH club with ball speeds around 128 MPH and carry at 170+. I switched to my 6 iron at the end of the lesson and finished the day with a flushed 200-yard carry.

The video below shows a face-on and down-the-line excerpt of swings from the lesson. Lots of good stuff in there.

I've recently restarted speed training with the Rypstick. I have also shifted from Wayland's Big Hitters Manual to Fit for Golf's in-season power program. The FFG program is less volume than the Big Hitter's Manual. It keeps the focus on the big lifts and some medicine ball work, perfect for when I'm busier.

I'm starting to see the results from my winter training. One benchmark I've hit recently is 170 MPH ball speed with my driver. While the consistency is still questionable, its been a huge motivator.

I paid for my course membership this past weekend, and I expect to get over to the practice facility to purchase my range membership soon. I'm hoping the range opens within the next three weeks and my course should be shortly behind that. Hoping for an excellent year of fun and progress.
