Popular Post StrokerAce
FITTING NIRVANA The other day I participated in my first full-bag fitting. TrueSpec golf offered an opportunity that doesn't come around too often - a free (450.00 value!) full bag fitting at the Boston location. I was very much looking forward to this as I had never done a full bag before. 3 years ago I had an iron fitting that wasn't very good. 5 years ago I had a driver fitting that was o-kay. 2 years ago I had a putter fitting that was a disappointment. I've heard a lot of great things about TrueSpec, especially reading about @jlukes experience, and I couldn't wait to see what it was all about. ------------------------------ On behalf of everyone at True Spec Golf, thank you for considering us for your golf equipment needs. We are looking forward to showing you what a custom club fitting can do for your game. We have you scheduled for: COMPLIMENTARY FITTING October 9, 2019 03:30 PM at Boston Your appointment should last 240 minutes. ------------------------------ WHAT !?!??! 240 minutes.... as in 4 hours ?!?! Wooo-boy. I was glad that I was the last appointment of the day. Upon arrival I saw that the location was in an industrial area and located in a warehouse looking building. This made me a little skeptical. But... I had an open mind and was optimistic. Waiting for me outside of the building was Nick and he saw me with my bag and greeted me pleasantly. Right away I let him know that I worked as a forum admin for MyGolfSpy and asked if he'd heard of the site; - "Oh yeah, they did that big ball test this year, right?" Funny...that really REALLY had an impact on the industry. I let him know about how the site is independent and lets the data speak for itself, how we do a lot of equipment testing and that I'm also there to get some information to share with the forum members so I'll be taking some photos. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was just him and I and the space was open, warm, welcoming and large.. I'll let the pics speak for themselves... giant hitting bay, shafts and heads galore... every machine you can imagine. Top notch. He asked me the particulars that you typically are asked when getting a fitting (what am I looking for, what do I currently play, etc.) He then took my 6 iron and measured everything (loft/lie/length) while I warmed up with an 8. A very nice touch: he asked what ball I typically play (BS RX) and we used THAT ball for everything. (Note - they use a GCQuad/Foresight which works very well) Shafts galore He described how they do all of their fittings using a 6 iron because that's the club that most people lose confidence in for some reason. 7 iron is fine but the 6 seems to scare folks. Personally, I am fine hitting my 6 but I liked to hear how they want to get folks comfortable and confident hitting a club they typically aren't confident in. Devices aplenty....(he used the tall black metal machine to bend my wedge and the other stuff was used to measure weight, length and flex) For a full bag they typically start with irons, move on to driver, then woods/hybrids, wedges, putter. I had a unique situation because I had a set of specific irons I wanted to get fit for and he was more than happy to help with that. I hit my 6 to set a baseline and then we compared my 6 to the set I wanted, tried a couple different shafts (I asked him to stick to the stock choices for ordering purposes) and found one that I really liked and performed well for me. We then went to the driver and I won my driver during a member-guest tournament earlier this year and I wasn't properly fit into it so I asked if he could help me with the settings. I took some swings, he looked at the numbers, made a couple of adjustments and my total distance before the change became my carry distance afterwards! Basically I added about 20 yards to my drive with some minor adjustments.... #fittingmatters My kind of drawers! After we got 'my' driver dialed in I let him know I wasn't "married" to it and if there was anything else he had that might be better I'm all for it. I tried a number of different head and shaft combinations that came close but nothing that could knock it outta the bag. He did suggest that I trim an inch off because it is 45.5 inches long! Even tour pros don't play drivers that long. We carried on with 3w and my hybrid and same thing... both were as good as anything else. I recently began to get a bit of a hook with my hybrid and he helped me adjust the settings so that it is more fade biased and I gained about 15 yards as well. I asked about my wedge makeup (50/54/58) and he liked it and especially liked the grind for the area/courses I play (New England). I told him that something about the 50 felt 'off' and he measured it and noticed it was 2 degrees flat. Well then! He quickly put it on the machine, bent it so that it was standard and boom.... I got the extra yards I was missing. He helped to make sure that the gapping in my set was good (of course since I didn't have my irons he could only estimate) and we moved on to the putter. This was in another section of the fitting area and used GCQuad. I had a previous putter fitting using Samlab and there wasn't much difference between the two of them. Mix and match shafts, grips and putter heads.... very cool. I recently purchased the putter and had only had it out for one round. I hit a series of 9 foot putts while he watched behind and the putts were going in and the numbers looked okay but he noticed that the toe was a bit high. He bent the putter a bit, I tried again and voila.... the numbers were spot on. Giving the putter a little makeover... THIS MADE ME VERY HAPPY.... this is where I lose the majority of my strokes and this was my 4th putter this year. Having a properly fit putter is such a great feeling! It was now about 7:30 and the time just seemed to fly by. We're both kind of 'gear heads' so it was easy to pass the time; Nick KNOWS clubs and we had some great conversation. He was easy going, friendly and helpful. All in all it was the best fitting experience I have ever had. The place itself is first class. Clean, organized, professional...everything you could want from a fitting. To top it all off Nick sent me all of my results in multiple pdf documents within 30 minutes after my session and even offered to send me the entire dataset. I was able to ask him a question the next day via email and he responded quickly. There was no pressure to sell me anything and I could tell he truly only cared that I have the best performing clubs in my bag - no matter whether they were new or old. I highly recommend TrueSpec; I've been to Club Champion and some other local "Golf Digest top 100" fitters and they pale in comparison. The one thing I would caution you on - for a full bag you will hit a lot of balls and you'll probably feel it the next day; I didn't feel it at the time but when I woke up the next day I did. Don't get me wrong, the full bag is awesome, and it's great to do it all at once and totally worth it but they do offer other individual fittings. TLDR; TrueSpec is wicked awesome. You should definitely do it. null
So awesome man. My biggest regret is not getting a putter fitting there. Might have to schedule one in the spring. cksurfdude
NICE!!! I've also been through three different fittings the past few years (irons, driver, full bag) and - while each was helpful - each actually left me kinda underwhelmed..... Sounds like you hit the jackpot with Nick - clearly a super-qualified fitter / club technician. Hope you gave him a big tip You .. on top of jlukes .. have convinced me that my next fitting foray will be to True Spec! Oh, PS: maybe Nick mentioned - but if you shorten the driver shaft the swing weight changes (gets lighter) so you may want to visit him again to have it re-checked. Now I'm excited to see what changes are needed in my bag when I visit TrueSpec in Bend coming up in 2 weeks!! I probably need new "everything"!! But if I gain yards, it might be worth it. Hey! It's only money, and I can't take it with me!! Well, here's my True Spec fitting result... no changes for the moment. I know, I know, rather uneventful. Jason at the Bend Oregon True Spec was simply awesome!! Very knowledgeable! We had a lot of great discussions and I learned quite a lot. We started a look at my bag, checking the driver(s)... yes, I had two of them, 3W, hybrids, and irons. I'm happy with my Ping Sigma G Doon putter and my Callaway PM Grind wedges so we didn't look at those. Jason checked the length, loft and lie angles, swingweight, and shaft frequency. After stretching and warming up, the first club we looked at was my 6i. I'm playing the SGI Bridgestone JGR Hybrid Forged irons with the Nippon Zelos 8 steel shaft. According to Bridgestone, the 6i is 24º loft but Jason measured it on his Mitchell machine at 26º. Jason had me take 3 swings with my 6i to set the baseline on the Trackman. Now my 6i is a club that I hit between 0-2 times a round. It took me 5 shots before I had 3 good ones. Jason selected maybe 8-10 different brand/head combinations (I didn't count) with a shaft that he felt would be beneficial for me that was similar to what I have. However, it was graphite. Some felt bad, some felt good, some were shorter carry, some were the same as my 6i, and the Trackman verified my "feels". Nothing gave me a significantly better ball speed than my club. My issue is my swing; I don't generate enough spin. One club really, really felt good on all 3 swings I made with it... Mizuno HMB MP20. Very tight grouping, but shorter distance than my 6i since the Mizuno has 2º more loft and the shaft Jason had was shorter. I could generate a little higher spin rate which I need. I loved the feel of that club, just not enough of a difference to justify spending money on it. However, if I ever switch, I will certainly have the HMB MP-20 at the top of my list. Next came the driver(s). I play a Wilson D300 with the Aldila Rogue 60R shaft most of the time. When it's windy, I'll swap it out for my shorter Bridgestone JGR with the Aldila NV 2KXV Orange shaft. I had similar results with both drivers. None of the drivers selected by Jason outperformed mine. A few months ago I put my old TaylorMade RBZ 3W in my bag with good results. Dang that's hot!! I toasted one just as far as my drivers. I had been using a Wilson D300 2H. I like that club too, and it has added benefit of being good out of the rough. I also use a D300 4H as the next club up from my 6i. They all fit my game pretty well, and to quote Jason in his summary... "Your shafts in your drivers and 3 wood are relatively on the higher end of Reg, almost to Stiff. The irons are the correct lie/loft and the shafts are long and soft. Not a bad combination for what you're trying to achieve!" That's saying nicely that with my swing speed... I'm doing about as well I I can. Softer shafts in the drivers I tested didn't help and dispersion was worse. So, all of my arrows are fine, I need to fix the Indian. My wrist, which has been bothering me for the last several months, is getting better. Just for fun.... my results: Irons (6 iron): Driver: Woods: Putter: Good grief, getta load of that selection of shafts and club heads... crazy! Sounds like these are the guys to consider if one wants to the best odds of getting the best matched clubs for your game. $450 for a full bag fitting doesn't seem all that out of whack considering the vast array of products to choose/match from. This was the only drawback to my fittings here in MT - pretty limited. I see there is one in Scottsdale, AZ... I can always sell my current sticks...right? Jason said to let him know if I come to play and he'd play nine with me. Way out of my league though... shoots in the 70's from the tips!! Jason told me that True Spec in Bend had several free full bag fittings this year. Not sure if that's the case at all locations, but it sounds like it's something to check out when you're in Scottsdale. txgolfjunkie
Man, that looks incredible. I've gone to some local fitters here in the Houston area but the True Spec looks to have them beat. Then again, all I saw in the pics were RH clubs and I'd be curious as to their LH selection, especially in the irons and putters. Great write-up. I'll have to keep tabs on another free bag fitting. I think I'll have to plan some business meetings in Dallas and take my clubs with me. Oh I don't do business in Dallas? Now I do! Popular Post pozzit
Sneaking in at the last minute I got my fitting in Weds 10/30. Having most of my bag being quite a few years and spent more time practicing and speed training, I felt it would have been largely beneficial to get an idea of what club(s) would be the most impactful to invest in. As mentioned previously I am quite frugal so FREE was the perfect price and most clubs being 5-7 years old. I have never been through a full bag fitting and have only had a decent iron fitting recently(not gamers) and more basic fitting driver fitting several years ago and lie/length fitting on my gamer irons. The Chicago Facility was great, good clean space with 2 simulator setups, a little lounge and nice shaft/putter displays and plenty of refreshments. Mike who fitted me has worked with True Spec for 2.5 years and as a local club fitter for 5 years prior. He was very knowledge able and straight forward giving honest feedback of what clubs I should be in and what swing mechanics are causing some of the issue I see in my shots. He was also curious on my training habits and what my goals were for winter training so he could keep those in mind as he recommended clubs, and not fit me into something I want to fix with a swing change. So as we got started warming up he had me hit the most comfortable iron I use (8iron) once I was more warmed up I switched to my 6 iron and hit maybe 10 shots to get a baseline. He noticed fairly quickly that my shaft was a bit to soft for my swing speed (92mph). Mike mentioned I probably could change shafts and get most of the improvements but suggested to just update the heads as well. So we tested a mix of iron heads (P760, T200, MP-20 MMC, JPX 919 Forged) and mix of shafts (Oban CT-115, KBS C Taper, KBS Tour). Bouncing back and forth between different combinations came to the conclusion that the JPX 919 Forged with C-Taper Parallel Stiff shaft. This change was able to give me a 400rpm more back spin, 2* more decent angle, 7mph ball speed, cut my dispersion to be 4 yards tighter, and 9 extra yards distance. My main priorities were focused on dispersion, touch more spin, and good gapping. He give me 3 tips as I was swinging to help reduce my over the top swing which was a great bonus. For those who may be curios he strongly encouraged me to stand further from the ball, move it more forward in my stance, and release my wrists earlier. This advice only became more apparent with every club I hit the rest of the day and although I wasn’t trying to use the fitting as a time to work on my swing I was trying to keep this in mind while I swung. As we moved to the driver I only got about 4 swings and he asked if I wanted the truth or a band aid…… TRUTH what good will a band aid actually do? He blatantly said that any club he puts in my hand will have that big slice because of my swing and suggested a few other mechanics issues to focus on knowing my plan to work on my swing path over the winter we kept finding what was best. Still my shaft was too soft and needed something much stiffer(104mph) and I get a way too much(3907mph). So we started with G410 LST, TS2, Epic Flash, and shaft options I tried were Oban Isawa Red, Accra TZ6, Aldila Rogue, we may have tried a few more but he just kept handing me different things. I hit 4-5 swings with each until I started narrowing it down to TZ6 shaft back and forth with TS2 and Epic ended up deciding on Epic Flash 9* with Accra Tour Z TZ 65 M4. This combination added almost 25yrds(total), cut dispersion by 10 yrds, brought by spin down by 1300rpm. Obviously there were the swing improvements I was keeping in mind so that does something but wow that’s quite a huge difference in my opinion. As mentioned he was keeping in mind my swing & my planned improvements so leaned more toward more adjustable options so he set the hosel at Standard Loft, Neutral Lie & weight in the Draw position. After that discovery I was ready to hit my 12 year old 3 wood (he mentioned was launched when he was in high school) and see how he can improve that. After a few swing he asked what I was looking for in my woods, I was looking for improved dispersion and maybe a touch more distance. He replied saying that my Old 3 wood hit every number he was trying aiming for and disposition was already quite good hitting 3 of 4 fairways and having some swings faster than my driver. So he said if I want to change he will TRY to fit me into something that is a bomb with similar dispersion. So we tested F9 with a few different shafts, Fujikura Atmos TS6 and Fujikura Speeder Evolution. The best results were from the TS6 Blue 75 S and that was able to give me 10 more yrds, bring spin down 400mph, 1.5mph more club head speed, and similar dispersion. So now we get into filling the gap between 3wood and 4i, Mike suggested skipping 5 wood and lean more toward hybrid/utility iron. So he gave handed me a hybrid don’t quite remember what it was but after 4 shots he took it and mentioned my swing/contact doesn’t fit for hybrid and the fact I have never really used a hybrid probably leaded to being a little uncomfortable over it. So he switched it to GAPR 3i with and Isawa Red Shaft and it hit exactly what he was looking for; distance, dispersion, and height. He didn’t even want me to hit my ping eye2 1i and suggested I take that out of the bag asap so I don’t have much to compare it to but I would have to say my shot shape was better and height was much nicer. I mainly use the 1i for punches and recovery shots so I wanted some versatility and tried some punches, cuts, and attempted a draw but my swing is the issue on that. So getting to the bottom of the bag he had me take my 56* and hit some shots as he ran to the restroom quick. I hit 4-5 full swings(which I never play) then moved to some 50 yrd shots I almost exclusively use that inside 60 yards and around the green. So once he understood that he said we won’t judge on something I don’t normally hit but encouraged me to get comfortable with full swings to add that into my game. So he was really satisfied with my Cleveland RTX2 results, he mentioned there may not be much he would want to change. He gave me a Vokey and Glide 2.0 and the Vokey he felt gave me more spin but wasn’t happy with launch and dispersion. The Glide 2.0 had less spin but was less consistent and I wasn’t catching it as square as mine so he flat out said keep what I have because he doesn’t think he can find anything better and the grooves are still in great shape. So last but not least, and actually not technically included in the fitting was the putter. I don’t have much data from that since we used a different machine but after tracking 6-8 10’ putts he mentioned I probably made most of the putts, but my putting stroke was terribly inconsistent and before testing anything told me to get a putter lesson. He gave me a few tips since I was hitting down on the ball and heeling it most often moving me slightly further away and ball more forward in my stance he also told me to stand taller and use a shorter putter(long arms). He also gave me a center mounted shaft with no offset and believes that will help me stabilize my swing and trick my brain into not wanting to deloft my putter at impact. So he ended up putting me in a See More Mallet putter with center mounted shaft with no offset and 33” long shaft. This helped stabilize me more and was more consistent but he still encouraged lessons. So that concludes the hitting side of the fitting he had me try some grips and said it is solely on feel so whatever I feel comfortable with that’s what I should go with. He spec’d me at standard grip with 2 wraps since there was slight pinching in my left hand on standard. So after all of that we sat in their lounge and went through everything and talked through any extra questions, and he gave me the quote of what each club would cost and why they cost what they did and how their building process went. I really enjoyed the experience it was a great way to spend 4 hours and would highly recommend True Spec and Mike to anyone wanting to do a full bag fitting. I’m not sure I would do the full bag fitting again at least not for several years but would definitely do the single club fittings they offer. Mike was very well educated, shared what would help my game the most and where he would recommend to invest in. I did not buy any clubs on the day but will definitely be looking at the most the specs through the winter As a footnote the shop was immediately above a Tesla Store and went for a Model 3 Performance test drive. 30 minute test drive was almost as fun as 4 hour fitting it was awesome and was absurd acceleration. So in total if I would have bought everything I was being pitched I could have spend nearly 63k. Ha yea that’s not happening unless any of you want to donate to my frugal life. J.B. TexasEx
I had a friend who's a mid-handicapper, 62 years old, get fitted @ Club Champion for their discounted rate - $175 for a full-bag. We never got around to the putter, but the CG guy wrote up a "recommendation" for $5k clubs including irons & woods with the latest Callaway heads and "Gucci" Accra shafts. I left somewhat overwhelmed because the CG guy never did an apples-to-apples comparison to his current gamers. It was always about the incremental gains he'd get from CG's super-premium offerings. Long story short, my friend took CG's specs and purchased TaylorMade clubs he liked from a discounter. I went for a putter fitting, paid 100.00, it took all of about 30 minutes and he "fit" me into a 400.00 Scotty Cameron. LOL I followed up and asked him what other more 'affordable' options there were. This location seemed a little elitist and kind of like they looked down their nose at you. When I went to TrueSpec I was thinking it might be similar but I was pleasantly surprised that it was the exact opposite. Their attitude was that they were not going to upsell you on a set of (n)thousand dollar clubs if the stuff you had couldn't beat it.... and in a number of cases he said exactly that - I can't beat what you have in your bag and it would be dishonest for me to try to sell you something. A truly delightful and pleasant experience. palvord, cksurfdude, tony@CIC and 1 other 4 Quote Driver- Cobra Aerojet LS Woods- Cobra LTD 3w 15*, 5W 19*, F9 24* Irons- XXIO X (6-A) Wedges- Callaway Jaws Raw (54/58) Putter- Bettinardi BB56 Ball- Maxfli Tour X Buggy- Motocaddy M7 GPS Remote Electric Caddy Bag- Motocaddy Dry-Series Proudly testing for 2024:

pozzit
My Truespec fitting was a mixed bag I really liked the honesty they had for if a current club was better or if there's were any tips that could help. But when it came to cost of clubs it was obviously a premium. I think the Callaway epic driver they spec'd me was $550 for the head $300 for the shaft and $12.50 for the grip + $20 puring. It was a great experience and thought me a ton about fitting process and my swing its just understanding the cost if you have them match exactly what you tested.Using MyGolfSpy mobile app cksurfdude and J.B. If you have a specific budget tell the fitter what your price limitations are and see what they can find. Fitting is about communication from the fitter to the golfer AND from the golfer to the fitter. Most places like Club Champion and True Spec have to by off the shelf with a shaft since they can't just buy the head. They will charge you retail for the replacement shaft and you don't have to get the shafts pured. Also if you don't like the price, just go buy the clubs on the open market. IMO, the advantage to the fitting companies is that you can look at non stock shafts to see what works best. If you just want stock shaft, just go to a PGA Superstore, Golf Galaxy, or other big box and use the fitting carts.
