One word answer and why

Recommended Posts

I was reading an online article in Golf Digest  about describing your golf game in one word and don't recall seeing a similar topic here.

There are lot's of words that I can use to describe mine - some of which I can't use here since the Mod's wouldn't like it. But the 'clean' one would be improving. Yes inconsistent could be one, abysmal could be another on some days, however, as I look at my GHIN scores for the past 80+ rounds in 2019, I've definitely gotten better with a more consist trend down.

What's your one word description?

Declining.

I’ve gone from ALMOST hitting 5 hcp on the nose, to now being a 7.1. I’ve had very few rounds in the 70s this year, and my chipping yips have REALLY cost me a ton of strokes. I just don’t get to hit balls like I used to. I went from once or more a week, to once a month....

Hopeful

Like so many age and demands of life have robbed me of what was once a solidly consistent golf game. I was the most boring player you ever wanted to see play for a long time - tee ball in the fairway, approach on or around the green, next shot by the hole, putt it in, par, move on. Very few birdies, fewer doubles, lots of rounds under 75.

Then it went away

Now I’ve gained back a good deal of yardage through SuperSpeed training and of late have gotten some consistency back through a set up change. Sadly the competitive part of my season has ended so this will have to wait until Spring to truly test. However I am able to practice and play through the winter so I’m... hopeful! :)

Solid.

Meaning my game (these days anyway) is good all around. I'm playing in a narrow band of scoring 72-75. I keep thinking i'm going to at least shoot even or perhaps break par! but just can't overcome myself. LOL

Funny thing is.... i'm getting older and better. Go figure. 🙏

Streaky - I show flashes of brilliance where I can play -2 or -3 but then I also have rounds that can be mid 80s. My main goal is to become more consistent and that starts with a better mental approach. I need to start hitting the right shot for any given situation, not just going pin hunting or pull driver on every hole.

Streaky.

I don't know why. Getting older and losing distance. Tired... playing after working 10+ hours on my feet never works out for score, although I do enjoy playing in league. Playing on weekends after making a pot of coffee and breakfast, playing with my dogs and relaxing a bit before hitting the course usually results in acceptable scores.

Improving.

Goal for next year is to break 70. A few things to clean up, a bag rearrange, and more on course practice instead of the range.

Occasional.

I've been lucky to average one round a week this year, with very little practice.  A promotion has led to a significant increase in travel, and it's really cut into my time on the golf course.  I've played a few really memorable courses and had a few pretty good rounds, but my handicap was a full shot better this time last year (playing quite a bit during CCC^2).  And since my putting has improved (shoutout @PuttOUT), I know my ball-striking has significantly fallen off.

Inconsistent

My game seems to be up and down; each time I play I struggle to put all aspects together for the complete 18 holes.   Have had some good 9 hole and some bad 9 holes,  but really haven't played a solid 18 holes this year.  Haven't played in 3 weeks so I am interested to see how well I strike the ball tomorrow.

Dang!!  You picked my word as I was thinking about it!!

Inconsistent... but not just each time I play.  It seems like it's every hole, or even every shot.  One hole I can stripe it down the middle, and the next hole I push it or pull hook it; then back down the middle on the next hole.

This issue has been worse this year than previous years, but I've had nagging shoulder and wrist pain most of the year so that's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it.

Exactly....and I think that makes it worse.   You put together a series of holes and then all of a sudden you feel like you can't even hit the ball.   Sometimes it seems like more of a mental lapse than a swing issue.

It likely is mental.  I tend to be more focused when playing with my buddies on Monday walking rounds because we are all about the same skill level.  I am more inconsistent when playing with my wife and people that we get paired with that are... well, not good.  I feel like I have to play quicker than I'd like, so we don't fall behind.  I never do well doing that.

I also haven't been playing consistently when it's just my wife and I.  She's been struggling this year and has only broken 90 a few times.  The last couple of years I had to keep focused because if I lapsed, she could beat me if I shot mid-80's.  Hasn't happened this year, even as poorly as I have played a few times.

I'm pretty consistent when I play with my wife or guys with similar indexes. Recently we played with two couples at different times that were just starting out (re: very high indexes) that resulted in my worst games. Not sure if it was because of the slow play - their taking so many strokes, or the lack of cart etiquette or......regardless we vowed not to play with those two couples unless it was a scramble.

Fun.

I play a lot of scramble events and sociable rounds with friends who are very mediocre. My bad rounds are still enjoyable and I’m competitive despite playing more than I practice.

Inconsistent. I can hit a great tee ball and follow it up with with a lousy 2nd and 3rd shot. Or, hit a bad tee ball and pull a par or birdie out of it. Very frustrating.
