Bleach and dirty golf balls/shoes

Mr. 82

Recommended Posts

So yesterday I was going through a bucket of old balls that I had just tossed in there, that had at one time either been in play, or had been in my shag bag, but ultimately ended up in a bucket in my garage, where I just keep them, because I have a hard time parting with golf balls, purely from the mere fact of "you never know."

So I decided to fill the bucket with hot water and scrub these balls clean.  At first I just started with hot water and scrubbed, with ok results.  As the water cooled I started thinking, 'ya know, I wonder how bleach will work on these babies.'

So I dumped out the cold water, and filled it up with hot water again, and dropped in some bleach, some OxyClean stain remover, and I figured, what the hell, and sprayed some Shout in there as well.

Then I dumped in all of my balls, which I would guess is at least 50 old ones, and then started pulling them out one by one, hitting them with a scrub brush if needed, and then seeing how clean I could get them.

Man, I'm telling you, bleach is the bomb.  Those balls look brand spankin' new again.  I mean, I can't do much with road rash, or cart path scrapes, but all semblance of dirt is gone from these balls.  And not like I'll be putting any of these Top Flights into play, but I've got a bunch of old Titleist and Taylor  Made in the collection that look as good as new.

Oh, and a side note, I've got a white pair of Skechers golf shoes, and decided to see if I can make the white fabric portion of these shoes that was white originally, and has gotten dirty, look like new again, and man, spray some OxyClean and Shout on those shoes and BOOM, we're looking pretty darn good again.  😎

Hmmm..Bleach never crossed my mind. I put all my used and found balls in a mesh bag and throw them in the wash machine.with a few towels and they come out great. Next time I will add a little bleach.

I would think the dishwasher would be a better appliance since they wouldn't be banging around plus the water is generally hotter.

Also I'd be careful with bleach on shoes.

I wash mine at home to avoid falling off the ball wash and breaking my ankle.

Good thing I swallowed my drink just before I read your post.

I'm not a chemist, but bleach is pretty wicked stuff- could it degrade the covers?

Not to mention what it will do to your hands as you clean the balls.

Interesting decision. Will try it today. maybe it will  be good to use dishwasher together with  dishwasher cleaners for better effect. I mean such cleaners as

Glisten Dishwasher Magic Machine Cleaner

Summit Brands DM03N-SS Glisten Dishwasher Magic Machine Cleaner...

or Plink Washer

Plink Washer and Dishwasher Freshener and Cleaner, Phosphate and...

or maybe Finish In-Wash

Finish In-Wash Dishwasher Cleaner: Clean Hidden Grease and Grime,...

Or it is njot a good idea to use them while cleaning golf balls in a dishwasher?)))
