Favorite training aid?

What is your favorite training aid, and what swing flaw did you get it to help with? I have struggled forever with over swinging, and tried everything to correct it. It has been such a struggle that even a lob wedge could get past parallel.

I finally found something that has helped tremendously - the Gabe Golf swing trainer. It is a 7 iron with ball bearings in the shaft. You swing it to the top, and pause while the balls loudly slide down, then swing through. It has changed my swing dramatically. Better top position and better tempo. It really helped break my swing into 2 distinct part - the backswing, and the downswing. The pause gives me time to get to the proper top position, then clear my mind and only focus on the downswing. It's like the freezer drill where you freeze at the top, and I suppose that would work if you had a mirror. But with hearing the balls drop, it allows me to focus on the feel more than a visual.

It's pretty amazing that after a few hundred swings with it, I can hit it farther and straighter from a paused position than I can from a normal swing. It added about 5-10 yards to my 7i carry, which was already at 185. I might have to adopt the Hideki pause in my normal swing!

Anyway, I just wanted to share that with anyone suffering from the same problem, and find out from others if they have any similar stories with training aids that helped them transform their swing.

Impact ball

I had one and it got so slick and kept slipping out of my forearms. Went to the TourStriker version.

I just received one of the balls on the lanyard in my monthly Mullybox and so far I like it because I can work with it at home.

That’s the one. Pretty much the same but the lanyard is a very welcome addition as there are times I am chasing impact ball all over range.

I bought a cheap one off Amazon. The ball is great, but the lanyard sucks. Might have to pick up the real thing from Tour Striker.

FYI, I called them after my dog got a hold of mine, and TourStriker sent me a new one for $20. I only had it a month...

I was looking at the Gabe golf trainer after hearing about it on NPG #85 and one thing I'm curious about is if there is something special about it compared to just making one myself?  What's the difference between the $150 training aid and picking up a random 7 iron out of the $5 barrel at the local golf shop, course or play it again sports and taking the grip off and dropping in 2 or 3 ball bearings?  This seems like the easiest DIY ever but not having the real thing in my hands I suppose there is something about it that I could be missing.

My guess in the timing of when and how fast the ball bearings drop will be completely different in a diy club

I don’t think there’s really anything special about it. Your idea sounds like it would work just fine. It may rattle around a little more by the grip since a regular shaft is tapered. I don’t know if there’s a special channel inside the GG shaft that keeps the diameter the same as the ball bearing. If I had it to do over again, I would probably try your idea first. The GG shaft is graphite, so maybe try a graphite shafted 7 iron?

Tourstriker Smart ball for me. My arms tend to get very disconnected from my turn and the club goes inside, really helps with feeling more connected.
