Pinehurst in June

Recommended Posts

Hi guys quick question. I will be in Pinehurst next summer for a wedding, mid June.. looking to see how hard it is to play any of the Pinehurst courses and costs? Won’t be staying at resort. Looking to play a couple rounds will either be a single or a 2 some. Any info would be great and thanks in advance.

Getting on any of the resort courses as a single walk on shouldn’t be s problem.   A twsome csn probably get on any as well although no 2 will prove tougher for that.

cost of 2 and 4 are both over $350i believe.  The others most likely between $150 and $200.

There are still least half a dozen to a dozen non resort courses that are top notch as well.  Pine Needlea, Mid Pines, Mid South, Tobacco Road, Dormie Club would all make great rounds as well.

Non-guests at the resort can reserve a time only 24 hours in advance on #2 and #4, 6 days for any of the rest.

https://www.pinehurst.com/tee-times/

That page shows rates for all of the courses for 2019, next June will probably be a few bucks higher.  As @Golfspy_CG2 says, there are a number of other excellent courses in the area, and I agree with his list.  Mid Pines is my personal favorite in the area.  Dormie will probably not allow outside play by next summer, if they truly do go completely private.  The rest will take bookings form anyone, just check their websites.  Or if you'll be in a hotel, check with the hotel, sometimes they can book tee times for you.  If so, they'll usually be a little less expensive than the full off-the-street rate.

I've personally done it as a guest of my brother, and if I was spending my own money, and had just a couple of rounds, I'd lean towards Mid Pines and Pine Needles as my options.  Better golf, better value, IMHO.  Of course, opinions are like...well, you get the idea.

Just bring plenty of bug spray to ward off the gnats.  June is just starting their high season of total annoyance in the heat and humidity there in the sand hills.  Good times!  😜

Second that.

There's also an added bonus IMO for those two courses. They both have quaint - interesting clubhouses. I like hanging out in the grill / restaurant at PN having a few drinks and a bite to eat after a round. Both places are very old school. It's nice.

This seems odd to write, but if you play Mid Pines, be sure to visit the men's locker room, which is right behind the little bar.  Like @PlaidJacket says, really old school.  Mid Pines also has the best terrace to watch golf from, right above the final green.  As an added bonus, Pine Needles and Mid Pines allow you to walk if you choose.  I know that Mid Pines has some 3-wheeled trolleys you can use if you like, I'd guess that Pine Needles does too.

You are correct. Last time I was there I insisted the guys I was with go take a look. Mid-Pines is great.

Thanks for the reminder Dave.

Yes.  Just park at Pinehurst and walk into the clubhouse, and they will be happy to take as much of your money as you'd like to give them.  I have several Payne Stewart hats, and logo balls from their massive pro shop.  And plenty of $85 polo shirts with the Pinehurst logo on it for you to buy.

Also, I have pictures of it somewhere, but you can walk down towards the starters building by the first tee, and there are statues to Donald Ross and Payne Stewart with his famous fist pump pose in bronze that you can take all the pictures you want next to or beside.

While I was there  a few years ago I was just walking around that area and the starter came out and engaged me in conversation and handed me a few scorecards from #2 and welcomed me to walk around and take as many pictures as I wanted.  He couldn't have been nicer.

The clubhouse is full of history as well.  I have lots of pictures inside the clubhouse of US Open pictures and memorabilia hanging on the wall.  It's a fantastic clubhouse, and great place to visit.  Definitely take some time and visit while you are there.

Some of these pics are from Mid Pines, and some are from the Pinehurst Resort.  All of the bronze statues are from Pinehurst, and any course pics and clubhouse pics are from Mid Pines.

In case you are curious, this was November of 2015, when I came up to caddie for my brother, who plays in Hickory golf tournaments, and they were playing at Mid Pines that weekend.  Those are the guys dressed in plus fours and all of that.  But on Sunday morning I drove over to Pinehurst to buy stuff in the pro shop and take some photos around the clubhouse.

And yes, please just ignore the ugly dude on those photos.  I tend to break cameras with my ugliness.

More things to do if you stop by the Pinehurst main clubhouse.  Play the par-3 course The Cradle.  Or play the (free) putting course called the Thistle Dhu, modeled after the Himalayas putting course at St Andrews..  Be sure to grab a beverage before you start, there are stands to hold your beer at each tee.  Be sure to ask if you need dining or drinking suggestions.

^^^^^^^^^^  All of that.

In addition takes said beverage or second or third beverage and grab a seat in the rocking chairs outside the main clubhouse looking at the 18th green.

The main hallway of the clubhouse is filled with historic photos and trophies from all the great events that have been held there.

Several years back, I spent an entire day at the Pinehurst without playing a round.   I took a short game lesson from Eric the DOI that morning and he graciously gave me use of the entire practice facilities the rest of the day, I'd go hit balls for a while, grab something to drink and sit for a while, then go putt and return to spectating---This was all before the Cradle and Thistle Dhu were built..

I met an wide assortment of people sitting on the patio in those rockers, guys from NY down for a bachelor party, a really awesome husband/wife couple from Australia, it's just a great place to spend some time before/after or even instead of a round sometimes.

That's right.  Courses 1 through 5, the Cradle, the Thistle Dhu putting course, all run out of the main clubhouse.  There's a small traffic circle in the middle of Pinehurst, with the Carolina Hotel to one side, the Clubhouse to the other, and Route 2 crossing.

There's only one bad part about this for you....you have to wait for 7 months to go!  But yeah, they're happy to have you on property.  Chances are that you'll buy something from the pro shop, or a couple of drinks, even lunch, or maybe be so impressed that you'll immediately make plans to come back and play at the resort.

Do you know where you'll be staying while you're there?

Yes....Waiting is the hardest part..ha   Just make it clear to her, that she is to make no plans for you other than attending the actual wedding, and even that should be negotiable 🙂

I'll second the Cradle, but build in enough time to play it a few times to get your moneysworth out of it.

The Ryder Cup room in the Carolina Hotel is a great place to get a drink, if you're there.  Beautiful old hotel.

Do some research on the courses at the resort before you play.  Not all of them are as magical and historic as #2, or even #4.  #9 is the only full-size course on the resort I've played.  It's a Nicklaus course, nice enough, but nothing memorable.  It's not worth the rack rate, but if you're a member of a ClubCorp course with the travel program or just a member of the PlayAway program (like me), you can play it for $35 (cart fees) and your guests can play it for $85.  My company has done a few sales meetings at Pinehurst this year, and I made myself very popular by getting everyone out on the course for south of $100.  I do wonder how long this will continue, but it makes the PlayAway membership worth it for me.
