Cobra Speedzone Irons

Recommended Posts

I was looking for videos of the Speedzone driver when I found this teaser video for the new irons Cobra will be launching.

They look very similar to the F9 irons, with the biggest differences I see being the carbon insert on the topline and the foam insert on the 4-7 irons.

I like the looks, but don't know yet whether I like the carbon on the top. But, if they improve over the last two releases, Cobra will definitely have a winner on their hands.

Not a fan of the aesthetics right now.  But I have to hand it to the guys at Cobra, they aren’t afraid to try something new

From what I was told at Cobra the Carbon Fiber insert in the top line is done for performance reasons not looks.  It saves weight and helps add speed to the face.

It is different looking.  But it isn't something that would bother me at all.

I agree, it isn’t something that would bother me after a while, especially if it performed better. I mean, it obviously doesn’t look like a beautiful butter knife blade, but that clearly isn’t the market that Cobra is targeting.

I'm in agreement, too. I can see where the carbon fiber would help to move weight lower in order to help with speed, forgiveness, and to get the ball in the air. It's definitely different, but I've got to give it to Cobra, they definitely are thinking outside the box. I like the way they progressively build their irons, going with hollow body, cavity back, and wedge designs all in one set.

Love Cobra, but that top line is going to turn a LOT of people off

I’m not so sure the target market for this GI type club is hyper-concerned with top line aesthetics.

There's a big difference between thicker top line and a top line with a shiny checkered pattern on it.

It's got me wondering how they'll do in the sun and if it'll be a distraction. I hope MyGolfSpy and Cobra do another Connect Challenge thread this year. It's always great, and I think this year will be very interesting.

I’m certain this was tweaked and tweaked until they got it right.

Carlsbad gets plenty of sun and any testers likely would have addressed this had it been an issue.

Don't see how that topline is much different than the W/S recent D & C lines.

I stopped noticing anything with those top lines about, oh, 3 balls into hitting them for the first time. Feels like a lot of other golfers said the same.

I'm looking forward to seeing them in the wild.  Cobra is definitely not afraid of being different in order to get better.  If you're thinking about game improvement irons, give them a try.

One thing I've learned about Cobra irons over the years is that you need to really see them in hand before making a decision on looks. I remember the Bio Cells looked dreadful in the initial pics, but when I saw them in a store they looked so much better.

I play a set of Wilson C200s.  It took less than a small bucket of balls at the range to get used to the topline of those clubs.  After two seasons with the clubs, I just don't notice it anymore.  I'm more focused on the shot I'm playing.  I understand how aesthetics are really important to some and if you're that concerned with the look, then yeah you probably won't like it.  That's ok.  But for most people, I'd bet you'd be used to it very quick.

I think it took me about four shots with the F8s to get over the rubenesque topline (and to get over myself).

I should add that I'm also pretty thicc, so I don't know that I can criticize my golf clubs for being oversized.
