Hey, I'm Dan.

I started playing the game while on a Navy deployment to the Middle East.  My friends on the ship were all avid players, so I tagged along for rounds at Dubai Creek and the Abu Dhabi Golf Club - tracks I had no business being on.  I’m so glad I went.

Returning from deployment, I knew I needed to get smart.  I’m a gear-head by nature, so naturally I found myself on MyGolfSpy digging into the data to drive my equipment purchasing decisions.  Being stationed in San Diego helped fuel the passion with year-round golf.  I even took my clubs (thanks for the buying advice) on my next deployment and played in every port stop.  Unfortunately, a military life means moving often, and a new job in Colorado promised great snowboarding but a limited golf season.

So, I’ve gone from non-golfer to golf nut with a golf simulator in his basement.  I appreciated your launch monitor review (confirmed what I’ve thought about my SkyTrak) and now I’m enrolled in a Data Science masters program at Northwestern - inspired by hearing that Calloway developed the Epic Flash driver with a supercomputer and AI.  Thanks a lot MyGolfSpy!

Currently I work a a remote VA Clinic as a solo provider. As a primary care provider, I was always assumed to play golf, but in fact I played very little, that is until 5- 6 years ago( not sure memory is fuzzy). Prior to this I could boom the ball but sliced and had every other bad habit that many of us amateur golfers have. Well  at that time I suffered a spinal cord injury. The neurosurgeon I saw wasn't sure what happened but I ended up having a long surgery.  After I was classified as an incomplete quadriplegic, I went to the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis for rehab. There they they asked me what I could do and had me swing a golf club. Disaster. With help, my swing became better and over time, many of the physical things that I had enjoyed in the past, but could no longer do, were replaced with golf. Wisconsin has a limited golf season but still, golf helped me get over my depression that developed due to  my limitations. This allowed me to become alive again. In some ways I can say that golf saved my life. There were other people who helped of course, and I hope to be able to thank everyone of them, but my new passion for golf was instrumental in returning to life . My swing is much slower, no feeling in the legs,  but my short game is pretty good. My experience has also given me a better understanding of the game and as fueled my desire to bring young people in to the game.

i round mgs shortly after i took up the game. I asked questions to learn more. After a while I made a few friends I’d converse with each day. Got to the point we exchanged numbers and even met up. Flew out to cali with some of them and even attended a wedding of one of them. Mgs has given me some life long friends that’s for sure

I was deployed to Iraq in 2005-06 and our brigade suffered heavy casualties during our 16 month deployment  (including a 4 month extension). We had 26 soldiers killed in action and 381 soldiers wounded in action. When I came home I was diagnosed with severe post traumatic stress disorder and spent the better part of a decade in a very dark place, including, multiple times, staring down the wrong side of a 12 gauge. I am not proud of this but it was my reality. 2 years ago while on a long road to recovery I discovered golf. This game has saved my life. Regardless of what my state of mind (luckily much better these days) I can step onto a golf course and everything else in the world no longer matters. I owe this beautiful sport so much!

My name is Gary, and I come from a country bountiful with golf courses, in fact too many for the population, however golfers here never complain about that problem. Green fees and club membership is very reasonably priced compared to some overseas fees. And where am I ?, it's called New Zealand. I have followed My Golf Spy for years enjoying their comparisons of clubs and golf balls. Having played for 49 years I have tried many different sets of clubs and to date my favourites are the Mizuno and my current, never leave my side, set of XXIO's. New to the market in the USA,  I personally recommend these for your 12 to 36 handicapper. They are not cheap by any means but are the top of the range from the Dunlop stable who also produce Cleaveland and Srixon clubs. I have yet to try Ping but I would make my choice from one of these three brands.

There is more to golf than just clubs to help the average golfer enjoy his weekend. I'm referring to the one thing some of us are unable to keep for very long. That's the golf ball as you watch it sail over the fence or go for a swim. I have been trying out the Srixon Ulti Soft Feel against the Srixon Soft Feel. Both are excellent and very affordable golf balls. I will be discussing this in next weeks news letter and offering the pro's and con's of these two balls around the course.

First, I will introduce myself. My name is Kyle Everhart and I am a Medically Retired Recon Marine due to a severe neck injury after a combat deployment to Afghanistan. My golfing obsession started after my VA therapist had lunch with my wife to figure out how to help and understand the struggles that I was going through. This is when the amazing game that is called golf was brought up because my therapist said that I needed to get outside and have a competitive and social outlet even with my physical injuries. Once my therapist found out that my wife managed a bar and grill at a golf course she said that is the perfect outlet. Soon after my wife went and talked with the owners of the golf course about this meeting she just had and just tried to get some pointers on how to get me started playing golf. Without hesitating these people who owned this golf and resort told my wife that Kyle can play here whenever he wants for free and that is how my love and obsession started for this game we all call golf.

Hey, my name is Stephen. I'm currently in the military stationed overseas in Korea. My love for golf started around 1 1/2 years ago while I was stationed in Augusta. I had the great fortune of being able to go see the Master's. Originally I wasn't really a golf fan but my dad was and I wanted to go and get him some souvenirs. The story is actually pretty funny because the base has 4 day passes and they raffle off individual days that you can pay to use these passes. I was chosen as the 23rd alternate for Friday's day of play. This meant that someone had to not pick up their ticket and 22 other people had to not answer their phones for me to go. The day of I went and waited in the parking lot just in case I got the call. Those who won had until 0930 to pick up their tickets. I waited until 1000, kinda setting myself up for a big disappoinment, and I figured that if they were going to call they would've by that point. So I start my car and as the engine turns and starts my phone started to ring. It was the call telling me that I got a ticket waiting and seeing how long it would take me to go in. When I told them I was in the parking lot already they were kinda surprised but I was ready to go. When I first got there I bought all of my souvenirs for my Father and myself. Then I went and walked the course. I ended up following Phil and Rickie for a few holes and saw some amazing chipping on Rickie's part. After that I went and explored the grounds. I saw the beauty that is Amen Corner, the beautiful azaleas, and I walked up 18 to the clubhouse. If you ever go you need to go to the Founders Circle to get your picture taken, your own cameras aren't allowed. As the day progressed I saw some of the greats play Rory, Jordan, and so many more. The more I watched the more I got drawn into the beauty of this game. Then at the end of the day Tiger's group started. While he wasn't quite back to form yet watching him play was a experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Since then I went and bought a cheap set of clubs to start learning how to play. Currently I'm just trying to save up to be able to get a club fitting and some clubs that are suited to me. Golf is a frustratingly enjoyable sport. Always offering a new challenge.

Well, I have more days behind me than in front of me so my relationship with this game called Golf has been a long and bumpy one. I can remember back at around age 6 seeing some guys playing  at a course near my home. I went home and fashioned a make shift club out of a couple sticks and hit a rock around the yard. Found an old Spalding Rebel one day outside the course and began hitting that...until my Dad took it and hit it with a ball bat to infinity and beyond....

In my 20's I bought  some used clubs. There I was slugging it out on both the course and range, trying to figure this game called golf out. I was a hot head back then and wrapped my share of irons around trees, bags, carts...you get the idea. It was a on again. Off again love affair. When I hit 40 I found a book by Sam Snead "Golf begins at 40". That was a real light bulb moment for me. I invested in better equipment and read everything I could get my hands on. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan Jack Nicklaus to name a few.

Although I don't hit it near as far as I did in those old persimmon days, my game however is better than ever. Now I enjoy being on the course, haven't wrapped a club around anything in years and find my time on the course to be refreshing and soul cleansing. I only wish I would have had this relationship with the game decades ago. My only regret is I only have only years left, not decades to really enjoy the game I've grown to love.....the game of Golf.

My name is Bill, I’m a club fitting specialist with Mizuno Golf USA in the New England/Met Section. I’ve been with Mizuno for 5 years now and prior to that I was a tech representative with PING. I also perform a fitting services on a fill in basis with Chris Cotes Golf Shop in Portland CT.

I rarely get to play unless I’m traveling. I’ll play 8-12 rounds of golf a year and hardly get to practice. I still maintain a 8 handicap, but at my lowest, when I played a ton I was a 3.

My favorite courses played are Winged Foot, Friars Head, Newport CC, and East Lake GC.

John 42 VA.

I grew up playing with old Hickory clubs with friends in fields. One would hit and everyone else were staged to chase the ball so we could find it in the long grass. Then a friend would take his turn. I also played pitch and putt as a KId growing up in Ireland and golf with my Da when I would travel home to IRL.

I was dormant for my first few years living in America as times were Hard. My first set were Pro Kennex from Sport Authority. But Now I live in Va and with my current family and professional life I fine more time to Golf.

I Stumbled into Custom fitting and Never looked back I custom fit my entire Bag and tinker with everything. I found MGS some years ago and there my go to for reviews and testing  and my possible purchases down the road.

I Set goals to improve and currently play of 6.5 from 12 with room for improvement.

My name is Thinh Tran from Elk Grove, CA. I invented the Transrover. I came to the US to unite with my family at the age of 15. Finished college and had my dream job as a Graphic Designer. At the height of my career, I decided to give it all up to pursue my invention. It has been nearly 10 years in the making since I first started hacking out prototypes in my backyard. The road has been tough but I never gave up. Our first mass-produced batched has been completed and scheduled to arrive in the US before Christmas.

The review by Dave Wolfe with MGS earlier this year was tremendous. https://mygolfspy.com/transrover-all-in-one-cart/
It provided a platform that allowed me to gauge and interact with golf fanatics like myself about Transrover. Many of them became backers on my Kickstarter campaign and remain to be my strong supporters despite numerous setbacks.

I love the work that you at MGS do for the game and for us as players. I believe Transrover will add another dimension to how we play the game that has never been done before. I would love for you to share my story and invention to more of your fans and followers.

Respectfully,
Thinh Tran

Hello, My name is Ben and golf saved my life. I used to drink a lot And I lived in New York City. I was down by the World Trade Center on 9/11. As I slowly got sicker and sicker from 9/11 I knew I couldn’t drink anymore. To make a long story short on a spring day in 2010 I missed a golf lesson I had scheduled the previous fall as part of a package because I was hung over. I asked myself if I wanted to be a drunken watched golf on TV or if I wanted to play golf. I made my decision that day and I’ve never touched a drink cents. A year and a half ago I sold all my belongings to move to Tucson because of the entire idea of a golf off-season was insane to me. But mainly because my chemical sensitivities have gotten so bad I could no longer live in New York City. I feel much better here in the desert, I’m teaching school, and playing golf constantly, any indoor activity such as a restaurant or a concert is out of the question, so I just play more golf. My dream is to launch to my charity ( I’ve already built the site) www. Golfsavedmylife.org to provide free golf equipment to recovering addicts and victims of domestic abuse. This Magnificent game, by the grace of God, has literally saved my life.

I sent these MGS guys 20 bucks once. Wasn’t a night when I was “partaking” or even a social security payday. Kinda felt sorry for them.  But not the sorrow I felt when I sent Bernie (Sanders) 20.  His was from begging, theirs came out of sympathy, and I was a voyeur to their obsessions.

Thing is, I got on their list.

Now, at seasons end, looking back, because of this g-damn list, all I play is yellow Pro V1xs, drove 45 miles for a professional fitting, and traded away a perfectly great set of AP1s for a set of T300s that came in two months after I ordered them. I upgraded a 10.5-degree Epic to a Flash and got 3 or 4 extra shafts lying around. I got a $275 putter somewhere in the garage and replaced it with a $30 sawed-off Yes Penny Putter.  Oh yeah, I also added a “most wanted” carry bag off Craig’s list, even though I only carry from the trunk to the cart and back.  Thanks MGS. Thanks.

I gotta MGS filter on my inbox. But no more, seasons over, I’m done. Quit. But I saw the new Vokey wedges are out.

Hi Golfspies,

My name is Randy Agapito and I started an organization to help people with disabilities improve their golf game and quality of life.

I have a background in Occupational therapy, specifically in neuroscience rehabilitation. A friend of mine encouraged me to try playing golf and I was immediately in love with the game. As I learned more about how to swing a club, I started to apply the techniques I used in rehabilitation and saw an exciting way to incorporate golf into recovery from injury.

Two years ago, I founded Inspiration Golf with a great team of people and we help "adaptive golfers" to improve their physical skills, experience community, and get back on to the golf course. We partner with other golf courses to host golf clinics for people with disabilities at no charge. In a short two years, we've helped almost 100 golfers in our area - providing PGA instruction, rehab techniques, and access to 2 Paragolfer stand up wheelchairs.

We have long appreciated the work of MyGolfSpy in helping to cut through the marketing hype so that we can help make the game more accessible to golfers with equipment suggestions based on credible reporting and research.

Thanks everyone for reading this, and hope to continue our mission to promote health, community, and personal independence through the sport of golf!

I am a Golf Travel Dude. I have been blessed to travel to play golf at most of the great links courses of the British Isles. Having made 21 trips there. I organize trips for myself and others. My standard set up is rent a place for the group and coordinate play at the best available places. The beauty of the British Isles is that most every course allows visitor play. Maybe a special trip organized for some Golf Spies would make sense. I am also a golf course rater and utilize that availability to play many of the best courses in the US as well as Internationally. I hope to share advise and counsel on the best ways to plan your golf trip.

I was introduced to the game of golf at an early age by my dad even though I couldn’t play due to a neurological disease called dystonia. I walked on a walker from the age of 7 until I had deep brain stimulation surgery at the age of 21. I remember always going to the course with my dad and riding in the cart and watching him play and those were some of my best memories. After I had brain surgery, I was able to finally learn how to play the game I loved with my dad as my coach. Unfortunately, he developed health issues shortly after that and we weren’t able to really play together but he would ride with me and watch me play then. We would stay up-to-date on all the golf equipment news thanks to MyGolfSpy. He passed away on 9/23/19 and he always said he wished we could play together one more time, so I played my first round of golf after his death with his clubs. Any time I’m on the course, I wear my dog tag with his finger print on it so that I can enjoy the game I love thanks to him introducing me to it. I’m striving to break my low score of 78 but I know my dad is still watching me play every round.

I'm Bob, in 1980 I was working as an Assistant Prosecutor in Jersey City, NJ. I had never played a round of golf and only gone to play miniature golf and make a fool of myself at a driving range. In my county the superior court judges had what was called judges playday where as a group have a golf outing at an upscale country club. The local bar was always welcome to go but the cost was way beyond what an Asst Pros. could afford.  The county prosecutor was an avid golfer and knowing we were underpaid gave all the attorneys the option of playing his public course on playday. If you did not play you had to work. A no brainer there. One of my friends in the office who played gave some basic lessons and understanding golf etiquette. With a borrowed set of clubs the big day came. I shot a sizzling 127 ( could not forget that score ), however because it was callaway scoring I won. And then by some miracle I also won the longest drive. ( As a group we were not very good ). I have never looked back. Softball, tennis, basketball good bye. Got my wife to play, one daughter got a golf scholarship. Retired now I play 150 rounds of golf a year. The best is I have more friends than I have time to play with. I am a lucky guy. A thank you to the late James T. O' Hallaran former Hudson County Prosecutor and retired NJ. Superior Court Judge.

My name is Mark. I started golf at 12 and played munis in Milwaukee at age13. I was a single digit handicap when I  was in my early 20's. I did, however, study music performance at The University of Wisconsin-Madison and my time to hit the links diminished quite a lot. By my late 30's I was lucky to play 3 to 4 times a summer.

Graduate studies in Austria followed. Then life got even more hectic. Golf soon  became just something my son and I enjoyed together.

Life consisted of conducting high school, college and semi-professional performance groups and singing leading roles in 4-6 professional and semiprofessional operas a year in the US and Europe.

I ended up in Singapore, where the cost of playing golf was just too pricey.

When I returned to the States, I decided to retire, only to become involved in suicide prevention at the request of a former student.  It was at  the same time that I decided to return to golf, only to suffer a major injury to my right foot.

I started up golf again 8 months later, only to find myself getting more modern clubs;  the previous times I played I had used persimmons!!

I first came to to MGS to learn about selecting new weapons!!

Life today consists of range work or playing a round 2 - 5 times a week, working with various groups on suicide prevention (including talking to NPR), some sub-teaching to pay my golf addiction, and simply enjoying my life with all te energy I have.

I did my first MGS equipment review this past month and loved the experience.

Down to a 15 handicap, still far from perfect, yet enjoying all things golf more than when I was a kid.

I have probably the most unique background of anyone in the profession. I am currently a professional golfer/golf coach, but started out my life as a classical pianist. I fell in love (permanently) with the game when Tiger broke on the scene. After 5 1/2 years in the Army (I am now a 100% Disabled Retired Veteran), I decided to follow my true passion and set out on the journey to professional golf. I’m currently fundraising in order headed out on tour full time next season (shameless plug😜). I use MGS almost exclusively when it comes time to make equipment changes. Hands down the best investigative journalism in the equipment sector of the industry!

As a caddy at 13, to working in a golf shop, being selected as an Evan's Scholar, and achieving full PGA membership, I guess you could say I've had a pretty full golf life - and it just keeps getting better!

But, reading some of these replies posted above me is truly humbling.

I just do my best to give back to the game that has given me so much.

Hello, friends...
I’m Mike (a.k.a. HardcoreLooper), playing out of Richmond, VA (a.k.a. Brooklyn with Confederate monuments).  For my day job, I manage consultants for the greatest software company on Earth (Red Hat).  When not at work or on the road, I help teach kids life skills and leadership through the game of golf at The First Tee of Greater Richmond.  I play a majority of my golf with my two amazing daughters, one is a freshman at William and Mary, while the other is navigating the wilds of middle school.  My long-suffering wife supports all of our golfing adventures, but we just can’t get her on the course with us.

I started playing 40 years ago at age 8, knocking wiffle balls around the yard and playing a par 3 course with my dad and grandfather a couple times a year, but I really didn’t get a chance to play regularly until I started caddying in 8th grade (where my screen name comes from).  I played all through high-school, good enough to be almost competitive in tournaments that mattered.  The dream died in college, but I kept working at the club over the summer and hitting balls between shifts.  Once I got a decent enough job and some buddies looking for a chance to play, I was back out on the course on the regular.  It’s gals before pals these days, and I wouldn’t trade these times with my girls for anything.  But now that there’s a critical mass of forum members in the DMV (Delaware/Maryland/Virginia) area, I’m trying to get folks together to get out and play.

I’m lucky enough to be selected as a tester for MGS twice, once for the Cobra Connect Challenge 2, and more recently for the PuttOUT test.  I’m still gaming the F8s, I’m still addicted to the data from Arccos, and my daughter and I still practice with the PuttOUT.  In addition to that, I gave the Tour Edge HL4 Ironwood a chance based on the Most Wanted Driving Iron testing, and I’m playing the Snell MTB-X based on the recent ball testing.  I’ve been contributing to MGS for the last few years because they really do bring knowledge that the golf consumer has never had access to before.

Hi, my name is Carlos, 43, engineer and part time golf lover. Picked up the sport in college when I worked at the local driving range in my college town. I'm self taught by just watching people and videos. Eventually I found something that worked for me... I really picked up my game play 10 yrs after graduating college when a few older co-workers invited me to play. Lots of pointers from them but not much in the patience department. I've really grown to love golf because of the challenge it poses... I honestly believe this is the hardest sport to master... I ran into MyGolfSpy by chance (thank you google) and my desire of wanting unbiased data regarding golf gear. I really started reading and following you guys around February. Unfortunately my playing time went down and to balance my crave for golf, I started to read your material to maintain some sort of mental involvement in golf. The reason my playing time went down was due to being diagnosed with the "Big C". 9 months of chemo treatments, radiation treatments, an ostomy bag and surgery got in the way. Come 2020 thou, I hope to remedy my lack of play time. But that downtime you guys helped educate me a lot on somethings that even I was brain washed about/

Hey MSG,

Golf and I have had an off/on relationship for better than 35 years now.

In my teens I would sneak on a local track with a putter and a 9 iron for a couple of holes, it was a so much fun but when I tried “real” golf I hated it.  There were too many rules.  Too many things to think about.  It was no fun.

In my late 20s a buddy gave me a couple of pointers and I hit one of those absolute perfect drives. And I was hooked.  I needed to hit that shot again. I was able to get down to a 4 but unfortunately, a rather serious car accident meant I was unable to golf for several years.

I  picked it backup in my 40s.  I have struggled with the lost distance and have had to learn how to work myself around the golf course.  But I have gotten less score focused in the last year which has helped bring the scores down.  I am now sitting at a 9 handicap.  And my goal for next year is to try to find the joy that I had sneaking around all those years ago.

Dear MyGolfSpy.com,

Since I was 4 years old I have been playing the game. I remember following my dad and brother around on the course at a young age and being so frustrated because they were so much better. I’m now 42 (43 on Monday) and although my frustration still runs deep, I’m now a better golfer than either one of them. I remind them, especially my brother, of this often.

I’ve been an all conference player in high school only to quit to play football. I didn’t play for 3 years after until my college started a golf team when I was a senior and I tried out and played number 1 on the team. We were awful but I started loving the game again.

I’m now a high school business teacher and have been the girls golf coach for the past 12 years. I love it and have a great time coaching. I have a beautiful wife that would rather me be home but deals with my obsession for golf. And finally I have a 7 year old daughter who is starting to play. All I want her to do is love the game. I wonder if one day she’ll look back at those times on the course with her dad and love it as much as I did when I was her age.
