Thoughts on switching irons

Jtom2012

Recommended Posts

I picked up a Sub70 699 utility and am very happy with it. I love the feel and look. I was thinking about trading my F8's for a set of 699 irons as I can get a more tailored set for my needs without breaking the bank. Just wanted to some feedback before I make a decision.

New irons will not give you a magic cure and make you shoot even par every round (unless you already do) or fix a 30 yard slice.   The reason for newer irons is to potentially get more forgiveness and better ball flight;  the improvement will depend on how well your current irons fit you.     I have hit all the Sub 70 iron models (and most of their other clubs) and they are a high quality club that is equal to the big name OEM models you will find in stores.  Sub70 offers great value especially with the available shaft options.

I know that a new set won't magically cure anything and that's not what I'm looking for. I bought my current set second hand as I was looking for something different. I can't shell the money for a properly fit big name brand and after discussing with Jason at Sub70 I can get what I'm looking.

If that is the case,  then Sub70 clubs are a great fit.  From what I have heard Jason does a great job getting people equipment that will work for them,

I bought from Sub 70 and I am happy with my purchase and Jason was great to work with. If you live close enough go in and they will fit you which I was able to do. I have an open slot in my bag and I’m kind of curious about that 699 utility. I’m just looking for something I can hit about 200 off the tee that won’t hook as much as my hybrid will do. Can you post what you like about the 699.  I’m not going to be able demo one until early next year so I wouldn’t mind hearing your thoughts.

I'm with @chisag and @cnosil on this one.  If your current irons are a terrible fit, there might be some good gains with a properly fit set.  If your main issues are with the indian and not the arrow, then Sub70 looks like a great option to have some fun with some new irons without breaking the bank.  If you fit well into some of the stock shafts, they are a steal.  Even with some of their more expensive shaft upgrades you are looking at prices below a new set of Hogans and practically half of a similar set of big brand OEMs.

Oh my stars....the 699 Pros are on the website...I might be getting in some serious trouble in 2020...

I'd think you would have something to gain just from being properly fit.  If you love the clubs you might also be tempted to practice more frequently!

I have made big mistakes in the past by changing equipment for change sake and even when I got the stuff for free.  It doesn't sound like you're doing that though.  Go for it and enjoy the new sticks next July when Spring comes to Michigan. 🙂

new clubs make a difference if there is a large enough gap in the years you buy them. under 5 years, probably not much of a gain. The real difference is getting  CUSTOM FIT. Irons will change just like drivers. There are countless #'s of shafts that can make 'bad' clubs into great ones. Look up the best golfer fitter you can in a 100mile radius and go to them. Then have them gap the clubs too.

It made a difference for me, but my irons were ten years old.  They were custom fit by a very good fitter, but technology really does advance in ten years.  I have the F8s, and they're good clubs, but if you weren't fit for them then your F8s are likely not right for you.  Good luck with the 699s and let us know how they are.  Those things are dead sexy, and the 699 pros are making me weak in the knees.

As a former Titleist PT / DCI 962 player with far two much time on my hands, I often think about what gear would suit me now were I still on the links.

Looking with interest through all of the published specs, another Titleist iron caught my eye--the new T300.

Yes, the club number stampings on the sole are ludicrous.  The number / loft correlations are at least two clubs strong.  But that's only stamping, and that's simply the fact of life today anyway. Not a catastrophic problem.

Looking more closely at the T300 specs, I notice that they're different in other ways as well, particular in loft gap increments.  It didn't take much looking to quickly notice that just a few minor and routine tweaks could make the T300 an extremely playable set for seniors.

Take a look if this stuff interests you:

Hybrids must be built for slicers because I haven't found one yet that I don't hook into left field damn near every time!

I'm considering a bag set-up with a 4-wood and a "fairway finding" utility iron instead of carrying both a 5 and 3-wood. I'd want my 4-wood to be able to hit and hold a green from 220+ on reachable Par 5s.

I feel you here.  But I just happened to find an old 17* Titleist 585 on the Goodwill auction site for $10, and it doesn't hook that much.  I realize this thing is about the same age as my youngest kid (12 years old), but I really like it.  Does Titleist have a reputation for making hybrids that aren't hook machines?

I love my titleist hybrids.  I started with a 585 and now game a combination of newer models.   Based on hitting lots of hybrids, I don;t think they hook as much as they used too.

  • 4 weeks later...

Received my 699 irons and wedges a few weeks ago. I couldn't be more happier with my decision to go with Sub70. I was hesitant because I had been brand loyal with cobra. Everything about the experience with Sub70 was fantastic. Got a few hats thrown in too and a thank you note from Jason which I thought was a nice personal touch. I would fully recommend to anyone who is in the market to at least give Sub70 a look!
