Mr. 82
Just a reminder that the US was up 3-1 last year at Ryder Cup after the first session and then Europe then went on a tear and dominated the rest of the Ryder Cup to easily take the cup. So losing the first session like the US did is not that big a deal. Not a great start by any measure, but still it can be easily overcome. And yes, putting was the big difference. DJ just looks totally lost out there fwiw. I felt like last night was one long commercial for Chantix and Untuckit shirts. I mean, come on, after the 20th time of seeing both commercials I was ready to quit smoking (and I don't even smoke) and order me a dozen shirts for Christmas, none of which I would ever wear. I don't even remember seeing much of any of the DeChambeau/Finau match, or much of the DJ/Woodland match either. Coverage was just so sporadic and random that I could barely follow what was going on. They could have shown a LOT more golf shots in their coverage, but we were left with Tiger's match and a few throw away sidebars to the other four. But don't you know they were sure to allow time to interview Tiger after his match and of course, all of the victorious International team members of matches. Never mind that one of them needed an interpreter and gave the usual platitudes about being a team effort, blah, blah, blah. I sure hope these TV contract negotiations bear some fruit for the good of the golf viewer, because frankly I'm sick of the status quo and their horrible attempts at covering golf for TV. BADFanBoi Scotty
I've decided that the golf (Tournament/ match) journalism sucks. This morning, was reading about the cricket last night in Perth. One article, was able to get a brief report about how each bowler and batter played. Despite only scoring 12, Wade looked solid then had a brain fade. Smith in his 40 something looked out of sorts (Even for him). Grandhomme, despite only getting one wicket, made a huge team impact and by slowing his pace a fraction, increased his control significantly, should keep doing that. Now if it wasn't for the scoreboard itself, I wouldn't have known my boy DeChambeau played. Even Eldrick, aside from 'well', I don't know how the GOAT played. Was he hot on the driver, was it his irons or wedges or putting that made him hot. Golf media really needs to look at the (Aussie Rules) footy analysis for the standard... I would have thought at least a player ratingout of 10 would be good, driving approach putting. Channeling Terrell Owens, they yelled, “I love me some me!” After JT showed the fellas a video of “T.O. being T.O.” this morning in the team room, he added “If I make a big putt today, I’m yelling it”. Definitely an emotionally charged moment for Team USA and Tiger seemed to be almost overcome with emotion in his 18th green interview immediately following the winning putt. Royal Melbourne (RM) looked great again. Will someone please stimp one of their freshly manicured bunkers? I’m asking for a friend. RM has given us a real treat with this setup. There’s something very unique about a slowly swelling roar from the home crowd in these team events, as an opponent’s ever so slightly misjudged ball misses a coffee table sized tier and inexorably gathers speed away from the hole for 30+ seconds. Wind forecast for Saturday matches is 10-20 mph from the same direction as Thursday. Tiger said the course was faster today, and I personally wouldn’t be surprised if conditions are approaching greasy, in the wind tomorrow afternoon. There are 20 points up for grabs over the next 2 days, so it’s still anyone’s Cup at this point. I’m hopeful the committee and Mother Nature both encourage RM to bristle a bit more over the next couple days and provide us with exciting golf. MaxEntropy
There is a plus to the sh!tty Golf Channel coverage - I felt no guilt in turning the crap off at my normal bed time the last two nights, so I got a decent amount of sleep when I was expecting to come to work tired. Some moron producer from Golf Channel felt the need to explain on Twitter how commercials work - it didn't end well for her. It seems clear to me that they have zero interest in attempting to grab new viewers. If the hard core fans can barely watch it, how do they think they are going to keep the interest of someone new?
