There are far more people out there still using flip-phones than one might think. Call them traditionalists or Luddites, there's always a contingent happy to eschew technological advancements in favor of a more orthodox approach.

In golf parlance, this group tends to be feel players and might be overheard describing a shot as " a three-fingered 7-iron."

That aside, the merits of distance-measuring devices can't be ignored and if you've been looking for a reason to experience it first-hand, this might be just the opportunity.

 

Testers Wanted

We're looking for 10 golfers who don't currently use any sort of distance-measuring device (GPS, rangefinder) to test, review, and keep SkyCaddie's new SX400 GPS.  As you know, MyGolfSpy takes its product testing very seriously. All of our reader reviews are published in our Community Forum. We expect a lot from our reviewers – writing a thorough, detailed, and honest review is a commitment, requiring extensive on-course work as well as participation in the Forum itself to answer questions and discuss product performance with other golfers.

That means to be a potential reviewer, you must be a registered member of the MyGolfSpy Community Forum, where you’ll find thousands of like-minded golfers from all over the world anxious to talk about golf equipment.

I am no purist, I believe technology is great for golf as long as it does not impede pace of play.

Technology is good to a point, as long as it's within the bounds of keeping the game as it is. I don't want something telling me what club to hit, or something that reads the greens. That's for me to figure out. Just give me the distances, and I'll do the rest.

Technology has helped my game a lot as far as clubs go, but I have never had or used a rangefinder.  I grew up guessing and estimating distances by sight and I guess that’s just what I’m comfortable with.  I’d be curious to see how it affects my game.

Are there actually golfers on this forum not using a DMD of some kind? Between lasers, dedicated GPS models, and smart phones, it seems like a tough ask. I’d really love to test one of these too. Since the move to Dallas, I could really use this thing to help me learn new courses. Good luck to those who are eligible. I think you’re in for a real treat!

I think all this tech coming out to help improve people's game is great. I do think at some point tech is going to give us information overload out on the course but I think we got a few more years before that happens.

• Old school yardage markers (stakes, sprinklers, etc...) and pacing off distances
• Honestly, I'm unsure about the tech relationship. Clearly it has an impact on club, shaft, and ball design/development, which I benefit from with newer clubs, better strikes, and increased yardage/dispersion. However, when it comes to yardage devices, shot tracking, etc... since I've never used one, so I'm not sure how I feel - call me a skeptic, but willing to try it out and see how it might impact my game.

How do I feel about technology's relationship with golf?

That’s a tough one. I have wanted sometime type of distance aid to improve my game but $600+ for a quality laser or gps has been tough for me to justify since that is the price of a new wedge set, putter + fitting, or driver. I feel the money is better spent on gear or lessons since better ball striking is needed regardless of the yardages. Some carts have gps units but I don’t trust them since they have cost me to many strokes. Overall all in the age of the launch monitor I feel technology has a place since it generally makes things better and helps people improve. It’s a healthy balance though since knowing every yardage, wind and slope adjustments, or all the breaks in a green only provides value if you can step up to the ball and execute on the shot. Technology though overall has progressed the game of golf. Not just with launch monitors but things like k-vest, force plates, gears, and my favorite putt-view have taken my game to a whole new level where I would benefit from a gps system. Just look at all the various testing results done from driver to gps and everyone should realize technology in golf is only going to grow and continue to impact the game.

• How do you feel about technology's relationship with golf? It is good and growing. Love it. As with most things I am a slow adopter mainly because I want to wait till bugs get worked out and prices come down. It is the life cycle of all technology. As it improves, it gets cheaper.

i currently use the bushnell tour v4.

i personally feel that technology has help greatly with golf. As new clubs come out with hotter face and creating great ball speeds, it’s nice to be able to dial in your distances and help decide what your next shot is. With having the assistant of gps and rangefinders, it really makes it easier to do so and be more accurate.

I currently look around for those white or red things in the fairway, guesstimate how far I am from them, sometimes look at the flag and the pin placement notes on the golf cart, then pull out my club and whack it.

 

I am actually very much a tech kind of guy, retired after 40+ years in IT.  But, I recently restarted playing golf and am joining my club with unlimited golf Jan 1.  I hope to play 50-60 rounds next year.  Plus, I plan to continue my driving range play of about 2,050 balls per month.  And, yes, I do have a spreadsheet I developed to keep track of my range stats, per club.

 

I currently play with seven XXIO Prime X clubs and am slowly replacing my 20 year old Callaways with XXIO Prime.

The Garmin watch I had died so I am back to stakes, sprinkler heads and the kindness of playing partners who have DMD.

The golf game has become all about the numbers; swing speed, ball speed, launch angle and exacting distances, so computing  technology is a natural partner.  Game tracking apps, launch monitors and distance measuring devices take some of the feel out of the game but if you want to keep up with the Jones having the latest tools and technology is necessary.  Sign me up for testing and lets see what the Skycaddie can do.
